I hope not, that'd be rather entitled of them. I know slash is a big thing in fandom, but so is het (Since for the most part it's usually canon)

See below (uh, UNDER the giant thread of wank). Best guess is she means het relationships that aren't really "together" in canon at first, but get a huge fandom following based on innuendo and subtext. But unlike slash, they have a real chance of becoming canon onscreen and the writers are more likely to embrace their fans. That's the OP's issue, and why she thinks het fans have no right to complain about anything.

Maybe you'd have to be a fan of slash to begin with to understand what the OP is driving at, but often in slash there is a dynamic where the characters are unquestionably on equal ground (within the confines of the relationship) and neither character gets defined along gender lines or is restricted in any way because of their gender. (For instance - Barney's a womanizer, but not because it's an expression of his manliness, but because he's Barney.)

Some other slash-like het pairings in my mind:
Kira/Dukat
Bond/M
Mara Jade/Luke
Buffy/Spike

Well, you see it a hell of lot more often in slash pairings than you do in het. Actually, it's fairly common in slash, so if you come from a standpoint where most of your pairings are slash, you might be more inclined to refer to that sort of het pairing as slash-like.

Slash likes to think it's great at this, but it's not really much better than het or yaoi(sp?). And yes, I am a slasher. You probably just know where to look for the half decent stuff and have lower standards for slash because you like it.

A monopoly? Of course not (and there's always poor, forgotten femslash). But slash pairings and slash fic tend to be rather more equal than het pairings and fic, if for no other reason than societal and cultural gender mores. And as someone who reads both het and slash, and who reads a lot of both, in many fandoms, I do see a real and appreciable difference.

God, will you please just shut up already? Frankly you make slash sound like some cult where you have to join and do a lot of groveling to get to know the ~secret~ rules. And I'm saying this as a person who still reads and ships slash more than het (or femme slash). It might surprise you but some people like pairings for the characters and not their gender.

And calling pairings with strong female characters "slash-like" is just insulting.

...wow, my interpretation of that phrase is completely different from the one that's getting discussed in these threads. In the context of the rest of the secret, I took it to mean ships where the romantic potential is largely subtextual and which a large contingent of fans have picked up on as a distinct possibility. In a way, I would say that Zutara would be a 'slash-like het relationship' in that it was never going to happen and all the possible ways of interpreting Zuko and Katara's relationship as romantic/more than platonic were incidental to the creators' intentions (which usually involve either keeping the two characters as friends, pairing them up with different characters, focusing on the plot instead of the relationship drama etcetc.) Penny/Sheldon from Big Bang Theory might be another one.

This, exactly. And I don't necessarily agree with the OP either, but I think that's what she was driving at -- het couples that aren't really "together" but get a fandom following based on subtext and innuendo. (Most of her examples were not introduced as romantic ships.) Their ships might end up taken seriously by the writers and actually becoming a reality one day onscreen, and slash fans don't have that.
