All the better quality of clothes I could buy if I had todays money in the 90s.
And all the nerdy stuff too.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-01 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
100% denim jeans? Goddamn right I'd drop 100 bucks on a good pair. At least it'd last a few years.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-01 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The '90s felt fun and full of hope because we were young and weren't yet bombarded with news 24/7, not because they had less genocide and fascism.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-01 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that was part of it.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-02 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
The 1990s did have less fascism though. Like... that's just objectively true I'm pretty sure?

Operation Allied Force was carried out by NATO in 1999. The ending of USSR. African wars. That's just what I recall from the top of my head.

https://www.fanlore.org/wiki/Purity_Culture_in_Fandom

There’s a subsection responding to people who imagine a halcyon time when fandom was peaceful.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-01 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasnt peaceful, but it was very different.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-01 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate this argument so much - is there a time NOW where its been peaceful? Has there ever been a time in fandom that has been peaceful when it wasn't just small enough or too early at the start to have the problems that inevitably arise when a gathering of humans gather with that one asshole in tow? Sure there was purity culture then, but you'll never guess what's happening in certain fandoms right now over the inkling of anything problematic emerging.

You can go back to old zine fandom and literally just read all of the insane feuds and spats people got into in science fiction fandom going back to, like, the 1940s. It's actually quite entertaining sometimes.

The thing is, the whole point of that story arc is that Londo is nostalgic for a time where his people had an empire and ruled over other species. It is basically exactly like people who are nostalgic for periods where things were really great for white men but terrible for everyone else.

Honestly, b5 has a lot of great messages that are just as applicable today as they were when the show was made.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-02 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
+1

Like, the point is that Morden is the devil. It doesn't matter what you want! It doesn't matter how pure your desire is. If you have to make a deal with the devil to get it, it isn't worth it, and it's going to end in tears (and flames, and blood).

There is only one correct answer to Mr. Morden, and it's Vir's answer.

+1, but citizens of the imperial core always tell on themselves, LOL.

We're currently rewatching B5 and the sentence "wish this wasn't still as relevant" has been uttered many a time.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-02 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Um.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-02 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
1. Way to miss the point.
2. Wars, famine, genocide, climate disasters, fascism, and terrorism were all huge parts of the 90s. And the 80s. And the 70s. And the 60s. Literally the entire 20th century. And the 19th. And the 18th but the climate disasters weren’t as frequent.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-02 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I do think that the 1990s were better than the present in extremely concrete ways in many parts of the world. There are good reasons to think this. Many historically bad things have happened since the 1990s that have made the world worse.

I mean, in the 90s specifically there was a huge deescalation of military action and perceived threat of nuclear annihilation due to the collapse of the Soviet Union and destruction of the Berlin Wall. The Apartheid government of South Africa was dismantled. The world was moving closer and closer to stemming the AIDS crisis and the Troubles in Ireland were coming to an end. Most of the world was enjoying an economic boom and the internet was fun and new.

It’s not as if there wasn’t horror and violence and bigotry and war, but there were some pretty big, positive changes going on in the world that made people think that things were moving in the right direction.

Gee, I wonder why Americans in the 90s were so optimistic?

https://pricetheory.uchicago.edu/levitt/Papers/LevittUnderstandingWhyCrime2004.pdf - "Crime fell sharply in the United States in the 1990s, in all categories of
crime and all parts of the nation. Homicide rates plunged 43 percent from
the peak in 1991 to 2001, reaching the lowest levels in 35 years. The
Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) violent and property crime indexes fell 34
and 29 percent, respectively, over that same period. These declines occurred
essentially without warning: leading experts were predicting an explosion in crime
in the early and mid-1990s, precisely the point when crime rates began to plunge."

https://unu.edu/cpr/project/civil-war-trends-and-changing-nature-armed-conflict -
"This paper provides insights into major recent trends in violent conflict, and analyses the implications of these trends for international actors engaged in conflict prevention and management. It finds that:

After declining for much of the 1990s...."

https://www.vox.com/2016/5/9/11639148/ethiopia-drought-famine -
"Global hunger is at historic lows, and has fallen dramatically since the 1990s, as measured by the International Food Policy Institute's Global Hunger Index."

I guess we'll never know....It's not like some of us were adults or anything then....

I'm gay as shit, I would not take back the 90s

(Anonymous) 2024-07-02 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, how dare OP have enjoyed a time period when even a single person in the world was suffering and wish that they could experience that personal enjoyment again. Don't they know that suffering is the only morally correct way to exist????

Angry aggressive anon proving the OP's point all over the thread.

I'd take the 90s back just so I didn't need to deal with them. Their deletion from the world could only improve it.
