I had fun at the Haight st fair today but I would have had a lot more fun if certain places weren't closed and my stupid leg didn't hurt so much plus I'm sick to death of having to lean on my damn dishwasher for an hour to get it to finish because the fucking slumlords who bought my apt bldg during covid REFUSE TO FIX IT!!!!

Stop comparing your job to slavery. You are being paid, you are free to leave, you are not a slave. I think it's incredibly insensitive and dumb and invalidates whatever argument for fair wages you might have.

Sure, you can leave, with the threat of homelessness...

In the US, sure you can leave your job, if you've got enough money to pay your bills without employment. You can also kiss your health care coverage goodbye, but that's easy as long as you're in good health and don't have any accidents or have an ongoing medical condition that requires medication. That includes any kids you might have. And if your field is in high demand, why you can just get a better job without having to relocate.

So yeah, quitting your job is easy peasey lemon squeezy!

I'm unconvinced, anon. There's aguably a more direct parallel between wage labor and Corvee labor (part-time slavery), but that's hairsplitting.

Also, unless you happen to be part of the idle rich, yourself, I'm unclear on why your life would be better if people would stop saying this. Are they embarassing you with their bluntness? Are they expecting you to do their work as well because they hate their jobs?

I think it's a sign of how far removed people are from the past. Most people aren't beaten at their jobs. And jobs tend to offer paths of advancement, meaning you can eventually make a higher wage or transfer to a more profitable field altogether. Unlike slaves.

There have always been low wage jobs. People couldn't easily stop working those, either. But there was still a difference between low wage work and actual slavery.

I just hate uncertainty. Did talk with former boss, he was very nice. But while his offer is technically more than I make now, it doesn't include insurance. And I remember from before he was a penny pincher. And I'm honestly not sure I'd be good at an entirely remote job. So I need to figure out how to gently turn him down so I can still use as reference.

But then, my current supervisor is leaving at the end of the week, and I have no idea what is going to happen after that. I have put out a few job applications, but I was kind of busy this weekend and didn't get off too many.

Mostly, I just hate not knowing, I hate uncertainty.

I can relate so well! I’m sorry you’re facing this.

FWIW, I think having doubts about exclusive remote working is enough to turn it down. The insurance issue is also a giant red flag to me. But I wouldn’t bring up the insurance, I’d just say I’m not a good fit for WFH.

I’m a little frustrated with my friends. We’ve been talking about taking a trip together for ages and decided to go to Korea next April, but every time I try to talk about flights or hotels or what we’re going to do out there, they all get kinda vague and say it’s too soon to start planning. I’m always the one planning stuff, but I don’t want to book anything if they’re gonna bail on me like they sometimes do.

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2024-09-16 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
I’ve been on the opposite side of this. The organizer wanting to lock in dates and get everything booked 6-9 months in advance. That is genuinely way too far out for me. I can’t put in a request for time off that far out from the date. And in my case, it’s always just a few weeks between saying let’s do it to suddenly I need to pay thousands without having a chance to save any money for it, I have to dig into my main savings account. I absolutely hate it and have yet to actually go on any of those trips. Less than half who would ever end up going and it’s always the same few people who don’t work and have a spouse who makes a lot of money.

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2024-09-16 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
whaaat this is the perfect time to start planning, to get the best airfare and hotel prices.

buy your ticket and tell them "well, if you don't want to buy now, I guess you're not going when the flight sells out." friends with a track record of bailing get no hand-holding help from you, don't budge or you'll be stuck regretting it yet again.

My fever isn't going down and I cried about it yesterday. But I am going to vent about stupid fandom shit.
I've got into relatively old fandom with a big backlog of fics. But apparently I've learned: 1) I am not interested in fics for otp before some canon events that are pretty recent. 2) there is like 3 authors still writing for my otp and the best of them calls one of the characters "older man" for no fucking reason (yeah, this authors are... not good) 3) most of the fandom right now is into f/f couple. Respect, but I don't ship it sadly. 4) also for some reason there is a lot of drama going on. Usually smaller fandoms are chill but nope, we are doing drama

I love the Twitter fandom scene (well kinda) but all the politics stuff im seeing has me so stressed and angry seeing how disgusting the blue -check MAGAts are just consistently. From how they lie to how jow the hurl around insults abd use the r-slur at the first chance. Ughhh.

And the whole thing where some trump account used a picture of Taylor crying after singing a song for a fan who died of cancer to say shes crying over being boycotted.

There really is no low they wont sink to

It makes it just galling to see them insist the left is evil. Because folks on the left called them weird

Bruh calling y'all weird is being nice considering...m

I was chatting with a friend today and the pain scale came up. It reminded me again of how I genuinely only realized recently that a "0" for most people is ACTUALLY no pain and not just very mild discomfort/pain, aka my best and very rare days. Just made me upset with the reminder I'm going to be in pain for the rest of my life, to at least some degree, since my issue isn't curable.

Re: Vent thread

I felt like crap all day despite shoveling ibuprofen into my mouth and I feel bad for my poor kidneys but dammit whatever sinus migraine infection bullshit is going on better fuck off, because I have work tomorrow and then covid and flu shots followed by work Tuesday. I can't start from a baseline of "feels like shit."

At least I took Wednesday off, but I was hoping for a "take it easy and coddle myself" day while feeling groggy and blah, not a "already felt like shit, now feel like hammered shit" day.

Tired of work and stupid arbitrary changes at upper management's fucking whim, no fucking concern for how it affects those of us below or even any discussion about it before or after. Meaningless statements about how they're totally rooting for us while setting us up to fail (because they couldn't be bothered to talk to us before the changes). I've heard all this shit before. Yeah, I could be a fucking grownup and say something. But this isn't the first time my trust has been broken so I don't see the point and don't actually believe talking about it will do anything.

On the social side, also tired of seeking out groups and finding nothing, or anything that's a match. I know you can't force immediate connections but goddamn does it suck when you need a change of pace and can't get one. Oh well. At least I'm starting to get out again.

I'm getting real tired of the broad demonization of processed foods. While I do find the praise of processed foods in some neurodivergent circles a little off-putting, I at least understand the logic behind it. If people that demonize processed foods would learn about this as well, that would be greatly appreciated.
