New Hobbies

(Anonymous) 2024-09-15 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone try anything new and fun lately?

I am trying my hand at creating hand drawn fantasy maps. I started with just doodling but it was a little trickier than I expected so now I've fallen down the rabbit hole of map making websites and tips and tricks. Still not great at it, but it has been fun to get into something totally different for me.

Sort of. I understand two languages other than English, and this year I'm trying to make a tradition out of translating one story (in the run-up to Halloween) that I think is amazing into English. I've done it before, and at other times of year, but I fall out of the habit when I don't set an occsion to. And a lot of my translations fit well with spooky-season themes of death and darkness. I'm feeling rusty, but I'm halfway through. And the author is psyched. \o/

I used to love yarn embroidery on burlap. We did that in grade school because it was a cheap craft that didn't require a whole lot of skill and you can make something special in a few afternoons. So I got some yarn and some burlap and I've been doing that again.

I've recently started doing crochet-- I could never get the hang of knitting though I come from a family of dedicated fiber artists who have tried to teach me, but crochet suits me and I'm really enjoying it. I've made a bunch of little amigurumi jellyfish so far and I've got a bunch of projects lined up.

Paddleboarding

I can't stand on my board yet but I do love that I can sit on it and row myself around water ☺️

A little sad that weather is getting colder that I might have to wait until next year before I can go boarding again. But I'm so glad to have found a hobby that gets me going outdoors!

I bought stuff for gel nails because I was spending a lot of money to get my nails done. At my workplace they prefer for us to have natural looking nails so I got nude polishes and it's much cheaper to paint my nails and grow them out this way than getting dip powder done every 2 weeks.

Books you regularly re-read

Inspired by secret #3. Are there books you re-read annually or often?

I used to re-read Ella Enchanted about once a year, but I haven't read it in the past couple of years.

It's not a regular thing, but I have read Homecoming and Dicey's Song by Cynthia Voight several times. Every few years I get a hankering for it so dive back in. Sometimes I'll read the rest of the Tillerman books, but often it's just those two.

I revisit Tamora Pierce's books, most often among them being Protector of the Small.

They are all comfort books for me.

Not consistently, but I met someone on a trip who would re-read The Neverending Story and Preussler's Krabat like that, once a year. And I still think very fondly of her, because that inspired me to actually track down both of those books and read them. I'm not German, so I hadn't realized the ASP song, Krabat, was based on a novel. So great.

I used to reread Terry Pratchett's Nightwatch every summer but I've fallen off the past couple of years because I've been too busy to read a novel.

Not really. Though, I'll reread passages or short stories I like.

Treasure Island by Stevenson. I read it at least once every couple of years.
It was the book my mom read to me as a bedtime story when I was a kid and that ignited my love for reading and adventure stories. I made her read it to me at least five times. My sister was not very pleased with my choice, ahaha.
I usually read it when I'm feeling low because I still get that cozy feeling of being under the covers with my mom taking care of me. One of my most treasured (ehe) childhood memories.
(I do skim some pages, especially the ones describing the ships because I still don't get ships lol)

I’ve re-read Watership Down (childhood favourite) and The War of The Worlds (childhood bonding thing with my dad) more than once over the years.

There is nothing I reread annually. But there are books I reread frequently. Tolkien stuff, especially Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion. Mary Stewart's Merlin Trilogy. A lot of Star Wars books. Dune series, especially the first book. Mistborn trilogy. Wrinkle in Time series. My book that is a collection of Edgar Alan Poe writings.

Of the Narnia books, I really only semi-frequently reread the first one and Magician's Nephew.

Used to reread Harry Potter a lot. And first four Sword of Truth books.

When I was a kid I reread a lot of Enid Blyton's books like the Famous Five and the Faraway Tree, and the Worst Witch series by Jill Murphy. I don't have the energy to read these days but I have fond memories of borrowing books from the library as a kid to read again and again.

When I was a kid, I reread Chamber of Secrets enough times to have it memorised (several times a year).

The Annotated Alice
Sherlock Holmes (almost all the stories)
Jeeves and Bertie books
anything by Edward Gorey, Bill Bryson or Oscar Wilde
my books about movies
most of my foodie books (writing about food, not exactly the same thing as cookbooks although I do have a lot of them)
among others

HHGTTG; Skulduggery Pleasant; Benjamin Ashwood (and pretty much all the indie Chosen One fantasy I’ve ever enjoyed); The Chronicles of St Mary’s; Small Gods (book 13 of Discworld); and Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal
It’s actually pretty rare I read anything new anymore. I used to read Good Omens frequently but was already kinda bored with it around the time the show was announced. Once the fandom had their collective meltdown about it, I lost interest.

Since Dracula Daily, Dracula has become one for me! I'm a little behind on this year's re-read, but I like doing so-- I like that it's a buddy read experience with my gothy pals and also tumblr.

Good Omens I've reread a couple times, and some Stephen King I've read multiple times, ditto Poe and Conan Doyle. I tend to re-read short stories more often than novels.

Roller Skates by Ruth Sawyer.
The All-Of-A-Kind-Family series by Sydney Taylor.
Smilla's Sense Of Snow by Peter Hoeg.
Yesterday, I Cried by Iyanla Vanzant.

I've reread Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint (the webnovel!) at least 5 times now. I'm basically always reading it in the background of life. As far as more traditional novels go, I reread The Cruel Prince (the whole trilogy, actually) at least once a year.

Sherlock Holmes

Not every year, obviously, but I cycle through these on a three year rotation.

I was looking at a few 30 Day Challenges (writing, drawing, exercise, etc) and wondering if anyone ever actually finished them or finds them helpful or fun? I've never actually participated in one because I just completely doubt my own ability to commit and remember to do it, but Idk for some reason it is appealing to me at this moment in time.
