Tar Season anon?

[personal profile] inkdust 2025-07-17 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I was living my life today until suddenly, like a fever dream, my brain remembered tar season. That was in this community, wasn't it? Does anyone have links to those old comment threads? When I tried to search more broadly, the internet really wanted me to mean The Amazing Race.

Also, I'm so impressed fandom secrets still exists.

It was here. I'll see if I can find some? I have to remember what year it was...2013, I think.

Here are the links I saved at some point…

Secrets #10 and #11 here:
https://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/996833.html?thread=740757985

Then there were a few scattered secrets that seemed to have a similar oddness, though not necessarily actually the same person, like #2 here: https://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/1019467.html?thread=752367179#cmt752367179

I think there might have been an earlier one that people retrospectively thought was tar season anon, but I haven’t been able to find it.

Dude, how weird it is that someone commented on the original thread asking if it was about The Amazing Race!

Advice!

Or rants.

TW for elderly...sadness? Idk.

(Anonymous) 2025-07-18 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I got my hair cut two days ago and there was an elderly woman who has made me depressed. She was waiting for her appointment. She fell months ago and had been bedridden due to a broken back and neck bones. So her long her had become tangled and matted. She supposedly has at least some cousins.

She apparently lost her daughter to cancer and she said her front room of her house was her daughter's dream bedroom still. She had possibly lost 6 other kids BUT she also kept calling her dog her grandkid. So I hope those were dogs. She said she only wants to outlive her last dog. Lots of other tiny things that are hard for her.

The whole conversation made me extremely depressed. I gave the hair dresser the extra cash I had to help pay for the hair dematting (they said they would charge her based on time) but i literally can't stop thinking about it. I've been crying every night. Like...I can't just ask the hair dresser for her name. I just feel depressed and helpless.

I have never

(Anonymous) 2025-07-18 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
read a fic that was over 100k that needed to be that long. They are all just desperately in need of a strong edit to cut out half of the rabble.

[personal profile] philstar22 2025-07-18 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I don't agree. Some fics are as good as a long novel.

Re: I have never

(Anonymous) 2025-07-18 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
You're reading the wrong fics then.

That hasn’t been my experience at all. It could be your fandoms or you may not be able to tell good from bad based on title, summary, and tags. I’ve been in many fandoms that produced novel length fic that rivaled or exceeded the quality of the canon.

100k is often still good. It's at 200k or more where, looking back, I think some of the excess could have been trimmed. But the 100k - 200k range is still in that sweet spot.

So the question is, which fandoms are you in, anon?

Thank you from Mom's Cancer anon from the other night

(Anonymous) 2025-07-18 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the condolences. I mean it. I logged off that night and came back, wanting to thank everyone who sent kind words.

It's... Going to be rough. But I'll be fine in the end.

Re: Thank you from Mom's Cancer anon from the other night

(Anonymous) 2025-07-18 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I was too late for the discussion that night, but I saw it and my heart goes out to you, anon. Losing a parent is awful, and cancer makes it come so unfairly early. I lost my Dad to esophageal cancer last year.

I know it's no help, but I'll be thinking of you both. It sounds like she has some very loving family. Do you have any other family or friends who can give you some support going forward? This is a lot to process, so please be kind to yourself and don't be afraid to reach out if needed.

Minor thing, but we just found out the spa we've got appointments at for this weekend is one of the few remaining businesses that charges a surcharge for using credit cards. I honestly thought only tiny businesses still did this.

Much bigger gripe, will keep short due to political nature. But it is pissing me off how difficult ICE is making it to get clients out of detention. Even when we win bond cases or when we get their cases terminated and they are no longer in court. It used to be they would at least obey judges. Now they don't care. Just so fucking infuriating.

Supervisor at work is 100% aware that an employee is not doing their job, is a negative, toxic, and sometimes manipulative person toward and around our individuals (developmental and physical disabilities), one in particular, and YET.... Just scheduled them for a frigging 12 hour shift where it will be just that staff and that individual. For FUCK'S SAKE.
It's just so frustrating.
