Every now and then I see some heated discussions around "filler episodes" here on FS and I find the whole thing baffling. It's like we have a person or two passionate people on each side and they just randomly get fired up and won't let it go.

I know there's an anon that gets really heated about what constitutes a filler episode, but I'll just say on the whole I enjoy filler eps.

Some of my favorite episodes are really good filler ones, some of my favorite episodes are really good arc ones. I think a good tv show has a mix of both.

I think one of the issues may be that a bad filler episode tends to stand out more than a bad episode in the story arc. A bad filler episode feels entirely pointless in a way that a story arc episode can't really be.

I've been trying to think about my favorite episodes from different shows that I've watched and the ones coming to mind mostly aren't filler ones (except for X-Files, so good choice on the image there).

X-Files had some of the best filler episodes, back when TV seasons did that more often. I'm not sure they really expected them to be more then one-off episodes where nothing really counts in terms of long term story development, but the nature of the filler meant that writers had a lot of freedom to play with characterization and world building more. I loved that, and the Monster of the Week episodes are still my favorites.

it wasn't an issue when series were viewed as a whole rather than two separate-but-alongside stories as the X-Files and Buffy engineered, one being an overarching plot storyline and the other being literally monster of the week. whether half-hour sitcoms or hourlong actions or dramas, shows were shows, not two shows in one. I feel like Buffy's MOTW were stronger in that there were still threads of the plot woven in, whether subtly or blatantly. X-Files went hard on it being basically two different shows, and as such has aged far worse. But a lot of current series runners for your fun 10 episode seasons every 3 years clearly grew up to emulate that, for some reason.

I only object to Kids These Days calling it "filler" because /shakes cane back in my day filler was the anime episode that wasn't in the manga gosh darn it.

But they're not filler? There were certainly filler episodes in many series (often towards the end of a season when they were running out of money) but these are just Monster of the Week episodes vs Mytharc episodes. Neither are filler.

I've always found the clipshow episodes for "Malcolm in the Middle" pretty fun to watch. They weren't just clips cut together. There were attempts at having a story for the episode, like when the boys have to go to therapy because they got in trouble. The other one was because Lois and Hal have to figure out what assets they're leaving to the boys in their will.
I guess in a YouTube world, compilations are a little more appreciated.

I myself found the season 3 opener for "The Sopranos" a favorite episode but a lot of fans don't like it and consider it a filler episode.
Same with the episode where Walter tries to find and kill a fly in the lab in "Breaking Bad". I really enjoyed that episode but I think it's considered a filler episode many watchers didn't like.

I neither agree nor disagree with this secret; however...

I've never understood all the fan love for the holodeck. What is the point? You'd rather watch characters play a game with no stakes than watch the characters advance their actual story in their actual universe? I don't get it.

I might agree if this show hadn't already done a Cartoon Crossover Episode and a Fantasy Episode. Mystery Episode ruled.

Agree on both counts. Then, Nine Inch Nails is awesome while I honestly think even the first Tron movie was pretty terrible.
