I had a period of time as a child where I really genuinely believed that I would never be as good as my peers... because I wasn't pale and/or blonde like the girls in the fairytales. As an adult, I can't believe that there were no non-blonde and non-pale protagonists in my books, but I do definitely remember this certainty that I would never be good enough to be the main character in a story. I was reasonably happy to settle for being a repentant ugly sister.

I went through a similar phase, but mine was because all the novelas my family watched had all the bullies, mean girls, and evil temptresses being dark-haired with brown eyes like me while all the good girls who got happily ever afters had light brown or blonde hair and light eyes. At least the books I read had protagonists who looked like me.

One of the reasons I like Genshin is all the fat female NPC that are good and happy. And active old folk. jRPG never has any.

When I was 6, I really wanted to be an angel in the Nativity play that year. Anyway a teaching assistant told me no because my hair wasn't the right colour :/

Ariel and Anne of Green Gables were a godsend for me.

Especially Ariel because she had complete agency and made terrible decisions, and I've honestly never felt so called out represented.

I think I was exposed to enough dark-haired heroines that my brown hair never bothered me. But ALL the "pretty" girls, in books and TV, had long hair... and Mom kept my hair short, wouldn't let me grow it long even when I asked.

I decided by the time I was five that I would never be "pretty." It was so obvious to child-me, and I was so thoroughly convinced, that I completely gave up on the idea of being pretty; looking "okay" was good enough. As an adult, I've saved a fortune on makeup. My early conviction helped me realize that the beauty industry would always have something "new" and "better" to help us look glamorous -- for a hefty price. But since I was long since comfortable with just looking "okay," I didn't need to give them my money.

<snicker> My big college rebellion was growing my hair long. My mom reacted as if I'd told her I was pregnant -- "Oh, NO!"

You're right, OP. The lessons we learn in childhood are deeply entrenched, even when adults didn't realize they were teaching those lessons.

Oh yeah, that was my experience too. I wanted to be the pretty main girl but I had dark hair and was made to believe that I was fat, dark skinned, and too grotesque to look at. Often I felt like I had to settle for hoping that there'd be a best friend character or the ugly stepsister who gets a redemption (like in "Ever After" or the Disney "Cinderella" sequel).

I loved this show despite its flaws and wish it had gotten a bigger following. It should have been SuperHavLock, not SuperWhoLock. I never liked Doctor Who, no matter which incarnation I tried.

Oh, I remember being very into this show for a minute. Not sure I finished it, but I definitely saw at least a few seasons.

I really like settings where lots of normal people have unique magical powers or conditions.

I'm so un-hyped about Tron:Ares. From the actor over to the fact that it's apparently set irl/not set in the Grid for any significant amount of time and how Tron as a character won't even appear as the small cameo he had (as himself) in Legacy, nothing about it seems interesting to me. Even the soundtrack - while so far it looks like it's the only decent thing about it - is droning on too much for my tastes. I get it, it's their style and it does fit the setting but listening to it gave me a headache.
