Michelin Star Restaurants?

(Anonymous) 2026-02-17 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone been to one? I thought about going to one on my next trip because the city has like 10 starred ones. And...eh. 9/10 of the websites are so pretentious and don't even have an example menu. I don't think I can take the chance I'd just be served a ton of fish.

Closest I've been is a Michelin recommended restaurant here in Dallas.

Me and my BFF Sweptawaybyou went to a Gordon Ramsey restaurant in KC last year. Dunno if *it* had a Michelin star (probably not), though some of his places have had them for sure.
It was - very cool, in a weird way. Really interesting to see how a high-end restaurant does things, and the food was *very* good, and our to-go boxes (they served a lot of food) came in a GR branded carry tote, which was neat.... Pretty expensive, so definitely not something I'm looking to do more/often....
So worth it if you think the chef cooks stuff you'd like.
Maybe look for reviews of the place, see if you can find someone who talked about the food? Even a pro review from a foodie magazine or something might give you more info....

I've been to some very fancy restaurants but I don't know if any of them had Michelin stars.
Check their yelp entries, they often have menus in the photo sections.

no, and I never will because of a number of reasons. your fear about not being able to find an accurate menu is one of them - I have food issues in my old age and I can't just take a chance that something won't leave me doubled-over the next day. another is, every travel blog/vlog, youtube, tiktok, insta, etc is filled with recs for Michelin restaurants in every country, it causes oversaturation, long lines, and wow do I really want to waste my limited time in this country waiting 2 hours for a "starred" restaurant that is neither better nor worse than the greasy spoon down the road with no wait. I don't care for presentation over flavor, and that seems to be the big draw for a lot of these famed places. just give me a giant plate of deliciousness for a low price and good drink deals and I'll take it over pretentious fame any day.

I’ve been to some in Europe and I enjoyed the experience. If they don’t have the menu on the website just google reviews and then scroll through the pictures. You’ll often find the menu there plus you can see what the meal presentation looks like. I usually asked for recommendations because they’ll typically tell you a beef recipe, a chicken recipe, and a seafood or pork recipe. They’ll be the three things the kitchen has perfected above all others and are usually a solid choice. If they have something new on the menu, it can be hot or miss if it’s done properly or not.

All of this is pre Covid so things may have changed and it could also be different city to city and country to country. My experiences were mainly in London but also Oslo, Copenhagen, and a few different places around Germany.

Le Cirque at the Bellagio in Las Vegas (I don't know if they're still rated or what, but when I went, they were.)

Really amazing dinner experience for my 30th birthday, I have to say! Also, it was over $1000 for four people, but we were there for a loooooong time. The setting was beautiful and the service was amazing. Kind of a once in a lifetime thing for me, I'm sure.

Oh, I couldn't do that. I have major food texture/sensory problems and as a result I'm a fairly picky eater. Just thinking about going to a restaurant and being served food that I can't eat makes me anxious.

I am sure this shows my level of innate trashiness and low-class upbringing, but I cannot handle a website that doesn't have a sample menu. If I have no idea of what to expect, I'm not going.

If you want to spend top dollar to eat at a place that generally makes dining a multi course experience. Then maybe? But personally, I don't think it's worth it.

You won't be given a ton of fish, I don't think, unless that's what they specialize in. Even with a Michelin star, they need to be able to accommodate allergies and sensitivities alike. But it seems like your interest in going comes more from the option of going, rather than a want to go?? If that's case I'd skip it. Find a place that has what you like, any high end restaurant will pretty much give you the same experience.

You could also try contacting the places you think look most promising. You probably won't get a specific menu, but they should be able to reassure you when it comes to alternatives/how much fish they'll force you to eat.

I've seen one or two star ratings given to more affordable restaurants/food vendors, but those are a little rare and I've seen can be insanely busy. The more fancy restaurants, I think most times are for people who want a unique or special experience and willing to pay high prices and go through the troubles of getting reservations or hanging around to see if a table will open up.

I've never gone, but based off what other people have told me, most restaurants aren't worth the price/wait/effort. The ones that are really good are worth it though.
Bur for me, I got really weird attitudes by people who have had such experiences, it's made me remember why I hated rich people so much as a kid (especially the nuevo riche sort). It's turned off some fancy seeming things for me.
Disgusting displays of humble bragging that they assume give off an air of humbleness but really I see them fighting with gritted teeth to gatekeep the access they believe they worked hard to get. And yeah...OK. Thanks for reminding me rich people spaces aren't meant for me. 👍

Old Favorites You Dropped

What are some tv shows (or book, film, or game series) that were great in the beginning, but you eventually gave them up? Why did you drop them?

The Walking Dead. Quit after the episode where Negan raids their neighborhood. I just could not stand him.

The MCU counts I guess. I stopped watching after Endgame. Steve was my favorite plus that felt like a great place to naturally end.

When I was a young'un and new to fantasy literature, I loved David Eddings' Belgariad and Mallorean series. But as I got older, I realized how... weird and one-dimensional his female characters were. Ostensibly they were strong women who sassed the male characters, but no matter how powerful they were, they still did the whole "batting my eyelashes at a man to get my way" thing that was portrayed as cute. I also got creeped out by how often he mentioned that one of the female characters was child-like in figure, petite, slender, like a child, etc. etc. in the context of how sexy that was. That wasn't the only issue, but those were the main issues. They were also really repetitive in plot and just not terribly interesting after I'd read more fantasy. Ended up giving away all the books because they bothered me too much.

I dropped Terry Goodkind's The Sword of Truth series because AGAIN the weird sexual hang-up about dominatrix characters with penis-like pain sticks, plus the lame Star Wars plot combined with the author's heavy-handed philosophizing.

I used to love the Simpsons but they did way too many episodes that weren't funny or made no sense or both. Gil especially annoyed me. Whining desperation is not funny.
House was my favorite but only the first three seasons.
I loved Cheers until Kirstie Alley ruined it.
I loved Star Trek Next Gen but the recent Picard show was just too depressing.

I dropped One Piece right at the time skip because it didn't feel like the same characters that I'd grown to love.

Time skips in general seem to be an ending point for me though.

The MCU.

And I was a pretty big fan but post-Endgame everything felt more phoned in and I just stopped caring to watch any of it. I think the last movie I watched was Eternals and that was so goddamn boring.

I dropped the MCU after Civil War (they made such a mess of it.)

Criminal Minds after season 4 or 5 - whenever the writer's strike happened. The writing went down hill and they messed up continuity.

Harry Potter after reading book 5 (you could tell the editor stopped doing their job).

Doctor Who. The classic series relied on good acting, good writing and people who'd served in wars and knew what the stakes were. The new series - well I got bored and gave up.

lol, I was one of the people who stopped reading Death Note when L died. Oddly enough, Matt and Mello ended up as my two favourites, but knowing what happened to them too, didn't exactly give me any reason to pick it back up again.

Rick Riordan's Heroes and Gods books. I couldn't finish the first book for the Kane Chronicles as well as the first books for the Magnus Chase series. They were good but couldn't hold my interest.

I stopped watching Stranger Things after season 3 because I just wasn't really liking it anymore. Especially since I'd watched seasons 1 and 2 to prepare for season 3. The magic from season 1 just wasn't there anymore.

Do you have any squicks?

(Anonymous) 2026-02-17 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
None here, there are certainly things I'd rather not bother to read or see and ofc things I think are obviously morally wrong or disrespectful to film as entertainment for example, but nothing that gives me an uncontrollable revulsion feeling.

Vaginal anything. It's very disconcerting that I run into it A LOT these days in the M/M section. I'm there specifically because I don't want that.
