It's part of the "all the guys want her" aspect of Sues. You might have random characters whistle at Hermione, but you don't have a whole discussion between the lead character's rival and his friends about how hot she is. Ginny, on the other hand, does get this treatment, for no discernible reason other than to identify to the reader that Ginny is smokin' hot.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-15 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. The whole Oedipus/Mommy issue thing I find as ridiculous as calling her a whore. I mean, ffs, if Lily and Ginny were brunettes, no one would even make the connection.

I sure hope none of these people have EVER dated someone with the same damn hair color as their parent, otherwise they've clearly got issues.

Water. Cloudy water.

If I remember rightly, that is; I was, and still am, very much on the pro semi-skimmed side.

Oooh, that reminds me: I want Cheerios!

Still laughing at Ayngelle

(Anonymous) 2010-07-15 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Lots of people do! And you're exactly right, it is awesome. XD

(Anonymous) 2010-07-15 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I get what you are saying but I find Ginny to be one of the better developed and complex females in the books. Hermione's the other one. The rest are too one dimensional too me, even Luna who has so much more page time that so many of them. Course it doesn't help that to me Luna is BORING.

Man, this. It's just like... the first relationship I had lasted for like a weekend. Because I was 15 and didn't know what I wanted in a relationship.

WHAT IS THIS I DONT EVEN

Re: Yes, this rant again. Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-15 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually agree. I talked about this a bit in my reply to ginzai above. I don't think Harry's a Stu, but I feel female POV protagonists who also mess up a lot get labeled as Mary Sues quite a bit, and aren't defended against them, as Harry always is. Katniss from HG is the one I was thinking of, she does some really awful things and has plenty of flaws, but I often see her labeled as a Sue and everyone nods and agrees.

As for Ginny, I just think Ginny is just a different kind of poorly written character than a Mary Sue: the Shallow Love Interest.

My dance scene (Lindy hop and swing) is made up almost entirely of gangly males who learned to Tame Their Limbs. It's a wonderful thing and I love each and every one of them for it. Go out and dance!

[identity profile] drandomtuba.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
This exactly... I could see a shippy moment between the two being okay, but it should have ended with Aang suggesting some crazy fun vacation activity. Yes, he'd matured a lot throughout the show, but he's still a child who loves to have fun, and he just saved the world.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-15 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously? You don't remember the love song she had sent to him or the cards she sends when he gets hurt?

Of course they're young then, but even those don't even cause him to notice her. He never thinks about them again.

[identity profile] t3h-toby-chan.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The new episodes aren't clever and are relying way too much on trying to appear current with all their pop culture references, and mostly failing. Which is ironic for a show set in the future.

Tangentially related, I would like to slap every mainstream TV writer in existence and tell them that just saying the word "Twitter" does not make a witty, relevant joke.

My dance scene (lindy hop and swing) is made up almost entirely of spastic gangly dancers who learned to Tame Their Limbs! And it's wonderful and I love each and every one of them. Go out and dance, anon!

(Anonymous) 2010-07-15 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never seen a Ginny fan call her a Sue to be honest. Except for a commentator here, most of them seem to be dead set against her being a Sue.

[identity profile] arcadiaego.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I sort of see what you're getting at here, anon, oh dear. :D

(Anonymous) 2010-07-15 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
She said good day!

[identity profile] fandomonymous.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
There are tons of neutrals and non-Germans (like myself) who went all flail-happy about the German team! They're really a set of classy, happy, talented players (current captain wank aside) who play for team and country before themselves.

...Admittedly, they're also quite good looking and make their own slash fuel, but that's completely separate. XD

[identity profile] kitty-wake.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The big James Doohan/William Shatner mutual hate-on, for a start... I wanted the Original Trek set to have been happy fluffy bunny land, and it wasn't. :( That, and the vanity. And the fact that he can't sing and he releases albums. One would have thought, after destroying Rocket Man, he'd have had second thoughts, but noooo...

[identity profile] caelith.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm crying for you.

Really.

[identity profile] riaki.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Each to his own OP. I find its hilarious and sexy at times. I wouldn't go so far as to characterize it as softcore pr0n though.

[identity profile] arcadiaego.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this about the voice? If so, I do know whhhat you mean. :-p

(Anonymous) 2010-07-15 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Poldi.. Not being BFF off the pitch?? Pffft. Of course, no friend would ever hug another friend that way, or celebrate their birthday tog, or elope with each other move to another city to be with each other join their clubs when they ask you to. They are clearly MARRIED.

Hmm... speaking of conspriracy theories... it could be that after they distanced themselves from each other, any threats of outing them just won't have that much impact. So never took place. And the thing now is just Becker running his gap.

Also. The Klose/Poldi is making my heart melt. Did you read about Klose's reaction to the goal he scored in the Eng-Germany match? Apparently, he said something like Podolski didn't want to let go of him during their celebration hug and it felt ~nice~. Pfffft. Of course it felt nice, Klose. This is Prince Poldi hugging you.

URG. It looks like it's one of his last games. Hopefully he gets to be in Euro2012, but let's be realistic, a 34 year old striker is kinda pushing it. THIS MAKES ME VERY SAD.

MTE...

[identity profile] ginzai.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly? I'd prefer that authors avoid the Happily Ever After trope in general. I can understand both points; it's frustrating to have the whole "your first lover is your only lover" cliche since that's so rarely realistic, but it's equally frustrating to have a relationship tossed at you out of nowhere.

I suppose the random relationship one annoys me more, but that's because it might be rare that a first romance is the only one, when the pairing is set up properly, it comes across as heartwarming and touching. Childhood/teenage friendships turning to True Love isn't really a trope I care much for, but I have seen it done quite well. Usagi and Mamoru from the BSSM manga is one such example, or Sophie and Howl, from Howl's Moving Castle. You see the development of their feelings for each other and it feels very believable that they really are the one for one another.
