Let's see what you're saying here:

- all female characters in relationships are passive wives who stay at home
- female characters are never be sisters-in-arms to men (or other women)
- relationships between male characters and female characters are never forbidden and are always calm and uneventful and end in happiness and marriage. meanwhile, gay relationships are always tragic and starcrossed and exotic and exciting, like romeo and juli.... wait
- characters who are brothers-in-arms should never be fluffy together because they have no lives aside from danger and excitement
- everybody in fandom is trying to "escape" real life
- only married women in fandom would take offense to all of the above

(Did I get it all? Where is femslash in all of this, anyway? Or is that just a non-factor because no men are involved?)

If you like bromancy relationships, and slash happens to have more bromancy relationships in it and so you like slash better? Just fucking say that. I'd agree. But there's no need to be a misogynist, homophobic/gay-objectifying/exotifying moron while you do it. I guess you can't help that last part, though. If I were as dumb as you, I'd keep that a secret too. :)

Slash is suddenly 'forbidden'? I guess it would be in a few specific settings, but am I the only one who thinks that sounds like a bit much? Not a lot of fictional worlds I know of really have specific rules about homosexuality (though the subject is rarely if ever touched upon). *headscratch*

[identity profile] caelith.livejournal.com 2010-11-26 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really. It's romantic situations involving two people of the same sex. Most romantic situations on TV or in the movies shy away from it, in slash fiction you get to read a romance/action/horror story etc, but with a gay romance instead of a straight one.

Nothing wrong with a guy coming home to his husband.

Army romances always made me uncomfortable, actually. It seems highly unprofessional to me. Granted, this is fandom and fic, not srs business, but I have a hard time seperating that kind of job integrity in my mind and just enjoying it.

aaand, as other have pointed out, sisters-in-arms exist. I think you just like slash.

TEAL DEER from some homo you're going to ignore anyway

[identity profile] akai_senshi.livejournal.com 2010-11-26 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow.

I...don't really know where to start with this one.

You do realize male couples actually exist, don't you? As in, guy-on-guy isn't just a fantasy? And a lot of those guys probably DO pick out curtains together and are crossing their fingers that it'd be legal for them to wed at some point?

Plus you oversimplified heterosexuality BIG TIME. Not all straight couples are going to be "date->wedding->kids". I know quote a few of them, fictional and non, that want nothing to do with heteronormative conventions (mosly marriage and kids).

I think you're stuck in a rut because you're trying too hard to live up to what society expects of you as a straight woman, and are using slash fiction to escape instead of actually taking the bull by the horns and doing something with your life. /opinion I'm not saying you can't enjoy it, but treating it like a crutch will get you nowhere.

Again?

[identity profile] freaksoldier.livejournal.com 2010-11-26 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
i read this just after i read a really nice fic about a gay couple picking out curtains. i LOL'd so hard. can't help it.

I'm 95% certain you're a troll, but just in case you're not:

In addition to everything everyone else has said about RL gay couples sometimes wanting lives of fluffy domesticity, and there being nothing wrong with showing that in fic - don't like, don't read - and about RL het relationships often not being "the wife waiting at home" (honestly, in my own marriage, if one of us waited at home while the other one ran off having adventures, he'd be the stay-at-home one) -

Not all of us who write fic are doing it for escapism. A substantial fraction of us are interested in character study, of plopping our favorite characters down in situations they don't encounter in the canon and exploring how they'd react. If that means having a female character take up arms and fight alongside the man she loves, so be it. If that means having two guys lay down their weapons and pick out paint chips for their new country-style kitchen, then that's the story that gets written. It's all about them, not us.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-26 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I see what you're trying to say--that we are conditioned to see male-male relationships as more complex and layered than male-female relationships because of the historically male-dominated nature of literature and story-telling and the consequent ubiquity of tropes presenting women as two-dimensional objects of desire whose lack of agency is contrasted with character-revealing male homosociality and, later, the detailed introspection male writers tend to engage in when constructing characters (a resource few of them dare tap into when writing female characters, perhaps because they're also reluctant to demystify/deromanticise the thought processes of women and see them as normal human beings), and because we are conditioned to think so, we are drawn to slash with the force of expectation--but you didn't phrase it very well. I didn't phrase it very well either, but you're probably gonna draw a lot of fire for what you said.

Actually, I see this is already the case.

[identity profile] val-tyr.livejournal.com 2010-11-26 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
