I think it's more that OP assumes that everyone is going to love their art sooo much that they'll want to make a huge awful fandom for it, which is a REALLY slim chance and something that a lot of authors would kill for.

The whole game was geared toward Cloud/Aerith, so much so that if a monkey played it by pressing random buttons they'd end up with Cloud/Aerith. That's why I don't see them ever doing anything like that even if it DID give both Aerith and Sephiroth's stories more depth. Too hung up on their favorite pairing to do that I guess.
