"Aristocratic" just means that your ancestors were better at murdering, stealing, and raping than most other people. So, grats on that.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-03 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Awe, someone's bitter.

Think about how war lords were kept as lords. You don't stay in power without doing some good for their own people.

Hell, just look at the history of the name Maldenado. They wronged and their entire lines afterward would know it.

Au contraire, if they were really good at it, they would have turned their land into capital and still be exploiting the undervalued labour of the people to this day! ;p

If anyting, this is a good sign the OP's ancestors were more decent than most and couldn't make the transition from a form of pastoral care where they were still somewhat accountable for their actions, to our modern system where they can steal with impugnity. In other words, they weren't good enough at stealing and murdering.

I don't know that it's relevant, exactly, but it's cool being able to trace your lineage that far! My family is basically a bunch of mongrels - wouldn't even know where to begin looking for ancestors.

Mum's side is commoner, dad's side is noble. Meh. The reason our family moved to Canada was to get away from all the class rubbish anyways.

It's nice to fantasize about being a noble lady in beautiful gowns in ancient times... Then I remember I'd would be a nothing but a 'half-breed' to most people back then and get sad. :(

I can see positive and negative sides to this. On one hand, your own fantasies seem pretty harmless. On the other hand, particularly if you're female, being an aristocrat used to really, really suck in a variety of ways, and honestly, you've probably got the best of both worlds now since you can be proud of your family and still have agency in your life.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-03 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a bad thing to be proud of your heritage, but if it starts effecting your day-to-day life ['I can only connect with fictional characters'] then you are, perhaps, going a little too far with it. I don't know what it is that keeps you from connecting with people, but whatever it is, it really does seem like it's somewhat unhealthy.

Be good and honorable, anon. Those virtues are timeless.

OP, while it's cool to like your heritage, like someone else pointed out...there's a substantially large amount of people related to royalty and gentry in the world. Myself included. I've seen my family's castle. It's interesting, but doesn't speak to the value of myself personally. So don't let it get to your head that you are somehow better or worth more than other people - especially for something you didn't earn. The idea you are just sort of inherently better because you're related to rich people is just silly.
