13. I'll admit I hate most weak characters. BUT, that's because most of those weak characters KNOW they're weak... KNOW that it's a flaw... AND DON'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT BESIDES SIT AROUND AND WAIT TO BE RESCUED. Okay, I can make exceptions for characters that have tried everything they can to change their situation and failed, and characters that are strong in other ways, like you know, having the strength to remain optimistic/kind/etc in a terrible situation. Those characters, I respect MORE than the strong ones because wtf, they're the ones that have to actually STRUGGLE.

But seriously? Characters that are all just "somebody save meeee" and "woeeeee" all over the place with NO EFFORT AT ALL FROM THEIR PART? No respect at all from me.

[identity profile] grayout.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
If he's like what I described in the second paragraph, probably. *dies*

[identity profile] halevy.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Watch Evangelion.

Shinji is the most angstiest thing I've seen on this planet. BUT HE SORT OF HAS REASON. His mommy went bye-bye before him and his daddy didn't love him/ignored him. Then his daddy tells him to stfu and get into an Eva, pilot it and kill Angels.

It's a brilliant show. :D

[identity profile] missmorrichan.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you :D Shinji's probably my favorite Eva character, but a lot of people seem to hate him XD

[identity profile] some-kat.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't hate him, I just laugh at him a lot. :c

[identity profile] missmorrichan.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing wrong with that XD I mean, he does do a lot of angsting...

[identity profile] some-kat.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
He was the original emo boy. >: I swear, that kid was listening to Linkin Park on that casette player.

[identity profile] militarypenguin.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, not Linkin Park. More like Pink Floyd because of all his freakishly surreal thoughts.

[identity profile] some-kat.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That makes more sense, then. I just figured he'd started going insane and tried to become an hero because his batteries never lasted. ):

If he never tries to get over it and angsts and woes all over, I'd rather stab myself in the face. >>"

[identity profile] halevy.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
He does get more confident but he reverts back to his depressed self after he ends up killing the only friend he had.

But Eva has more awesome-r characters. Misato, Asuka and Kaji must be the greatest characters ever invented.

Then again, unless you want to remain sane, don't watch Eva! :D Seriously, the End of Evangelion movie was the most brain-breaking thing because of its ending. Wrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyy.

[identity profile] failaga.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
*waits to be rescued*

*while woe-ing to self*

[identity profile] grayout.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
PEDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooo

Rescued from what?

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
13. And if a key point of their character is to get the courage to do so?

I'd be less frustrated with people who bitch about characters if, y'know, they made sense about it.

[identity profile] grayout.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Okay, I can make exceptions for characters that have tried everything they can to change their situation and failed, and characters that are strong in other ways, like you know, having the strength to remain optimistic/kind/etc in a terrible situation. If they get it, great. I respect them more than the people who started OUT strong and had no problems to begin with, because they had to fight for it.

If they sit there and woe is meeeeee until someone rescues them, well, hate.

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I can't really think of a character like that (well maybe a character from Berserk, but her dad almost raped her, so I'm cutting her slack). Sometimes people assume they're like that, aka Hinamori from Bleach, when that's not the case at all - just the opposite - that frustrates me.

Or people calling characters emo. OKAY IF YOU WERE JUST FORCED TO KILL THE MAN YOU LOVED/LIFE IS OVER/SPEND YOUR LIFE THINKING YOUR A TOOL THEN YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO SOMETIMES BROOD.

[identity profile] grayout.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Canonly.... Alice from Shadow Hearts, maybe. Rinoa from FFVIII, to an extent (a pretty big extent, though she did have her reasons). *dead* Princess Zelda in like every game before the N64 ones. Apparently Shinji from Evangelion, if the people above are right. Ovelia in FFT. Tia, to an extent, in Lufia II. SFghkajghakejht Shana in Legend of Dragoon auuuugh aetgajetkgahejt so much hate.

OC-wise, RP-wise? OH HELL YES I COULD TELL YOU HORROR STORIES. Especially when people RP canon characters and make them ridiculously weak just for angst. HATE HATEHATE.

Okay, well, yes. Those characters have a right to brood. But why does every freaking character have to have killed the man she loveeeeed in the first place, or oooomg feel like a tool, or aethgakejtgha melodramatic stuff like that. Man, if my parents hated me, I'd flip 'em off and go on my way -- it's not that the angst isn't unreasonable, it's that the AMOUNT of it in comparison to the characters that just GET OVER THINGS (like some people DO in real life) is just... like, 99/100.

When I'm like "god he's so emo" I don't mean "man he's reacting unreasonably to the situation he's in," I'm just saying man, he angsts a lot. And they DO. So what's the problem?

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
But why does every freaking character have to have killed the man she loveeeeed in the first place
Many don't. O_o. Some do because it's an interesting story.

Man, if my parents hated me, I'd flip 'em off and go on my way
Most people couldn't. Even more so if they're CHILDREN. I can't say I even believe you in that case.

it's that the AMOUNT of it in comparison to the characters that just GET OVER THINGS (like some people DO in real life) is just... like, 99/100.
And in all my canons it's never like that. Because of the fact that people have different personalities, different circumstances, and different roles in the story.

And they DO. So what's the problem?
When people tell them to get over themselves, and probably later whine about having to clean their rooms.

[identity profile] grayout.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Many don't, and angst about other stuff... some people just have a higher tolerance for emotional/whatever pain, and judge characters by their own scale and not yours. Them's the breaks?

Sometimes characters DO need to get over themselves, in my opinion. And as for the cleaning-room whiners, people are allowed to be hypocrites? It doesn't make them WRONG when they say the first thing, though.

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
And I'm guessing, in well-written canon, it's because they may have emotional support. Sorry if I can't bitch about a character whose life sucks and they've got no family and friends because their family was slaughtered and they're afraid to open up again.

It's not always about having more emotional strength; it's often about not having to go through crap and thus being normal and having a better perspective.

Sometimes characters DO need to get over themselves, in my opinion. And as for the cleaning-room whiners, people are allowed to be hypocrites? It doesn't make them WRONG when they say the first thing, though.
GOD CHARACTER A SUCKS BECAUSE THE ONLY PERSON HE'D EVER WANTED TO LOVE HIM KILLED HIS TWIN SISTER. HE NEED TO GET OVER HIMSELF AND STOP WHINING, EVEN THOUGH HE REALLY DOESN'T.

PS MY MOM SUCKS FOR GROUNDING ME FOR NOT CLEANING MY ROOM.

I'm sorry, I'll laugh at the stupidity.

There may be a story out there where a character who needs to get over themselves. I can't really think of a character like that in any canon I follow.

[identity profile] grayout.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
What? When did I say any characters SUCKED?

I didn't say they were BAD CHARACTERS, I said I DISLIKED THEM. I PERSONALLY DO NOT LIKE THIS CHARACTER. I'm allowed to have an opinion right? I have a personal scale by which I judge people. So does everybody. And not everybody's scale is the same. OH WAIT NVM, YOU'RE LAUGHING AT MY STUPIDITY I BETTER CHANGE LOLZ.

Uh, seriously. You have something against me or something?

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Um no. I do not mind if people dislike characters. There are characters I dislike.

However there is a big difference between I DISLIKE A CHARACTER and that character needs to get over themselves.

The only thing I honestly laughed at you about was your comment that if your parents hated you you'd flip them off. Though I do feel very sorry for you if you've grown up in environment to where you'd deal with something so painful like that in that manner.

I have nothing against you personally, no.

What's so wrong about calling a character angsty when they are?

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing.

Unless you're bashing a character with a fucked up life and calling them emo like they have no right to suffer/need to get over themselves.
