In my ideal world all parents would need a licence have kids. You need a licence for driving, why not parenting as well? Raising a kid into a healthy adult is a hugely demanding task yet every irresponsible, uncaring idiot is free to attempt it

I'd love it if they'd make licenses mandatory for being a parent.

As someone who comes from a family with rampant physical, emotion, and sexual abuse, I completely agree.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Cunt, go get raped by your dad/brother/uncle some more.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, seriously?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
You are the reason there should be spawning restrictions. You.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
lol

But seriously, you need to be neutered.

In an ideal world, parents would have free access to parenting classes.

A licence is stupid and simply won't work. I mean what are you going to do, force sterilizations, abortions and adoptions on people who haven't done anything wrong?

Now Parenting classes? Now that is something that's actually helpful and actionable.

[identity profile] amph87.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect people who'd bother going to parenting classes would be good parenting material to begin with. Also you don't need a class to learn if you really wanted to, books and internet exist.

No forced abortions/sterilizations, that would be barbaric. If you had a baby without a licence, you'd have to get the licence. If you don't pass, then better luck next time. Baby goes to adoption.

IDK it just makes perfect sense to me. I'm not talking about a super hard test either, just a thorough background/mental check whether you're a responsible person and not some abusive nutcase monster who only keeps kids to reap the child benefits. Those people do exist, mind.

My son loves your icon!

He's one of three kids I've had because I once read a fic where the Doctor and Rose Tyler had a baby.

I wonder how many of the people who think parents should require a license to have kids are pissed at the government for putting other restrictions on personal freedom - i.e., sodomy laws, blue laws, anti-drug legislation, marriage rules, etc.

you might want to think about that one.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been saying this for years.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Just no. It would be like Mississippi's thankfully declined personhood law. Just another way of government control.

It has too many ways of being abused, this would allow those in power to deny people the right to parent. Do you really want to give the conservatives the right to strip the parental rights from homosexual couples? And how the crap do you decide what makes a good parent? How do you make the test in order to get your license? Because guess what? Then study guides will come out to pass the parent license. Expensive study guides. Rich people could afford them. Poor people couldn't. Classism very yes.

And a short step from eugenics. We pretty much had a parenting license program when eugenics was in fashion.

In a very cute rainbow world it could work but this is reality and everything you stated is on.

[identity profile] jazmin-firewing.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
IAWTC.

You'd think it's a good idea, and it does look like one on the surface -- but when you look a little closer, the illusion is stripped away. Who writes the test? Whose idea of "good parenting" are we going by? Do you have to pay for the test? Do you have to be pregnant or in a relationship to take it? Etc, etc, etc.

You get to thinking more about it, and it starts looking more and more like eugenics again.

[identity profile] lavosspawn.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really agree with this, the implications are a little too 1984 for me, but when I think of all the hoops my mom had to jump through to adopt my brother while some abusive bastard is able to just pop out their own kid and treat it like crap.... makes me want to strangle a teddy bear.

[identity profile] raichu100.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh. The adoption system needs some serious work.

[identity profile] lovegonnadrown.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
oh please we all know that's bullshit. you're kidding yourself if you think the government would seriously put that forward and not purposefully design it to favor any pairs that are white, of at least average intelligence, middle class and a cisman and ciswoman.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
What does this have to do with the secret? Explain.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Because reproduction is a human right (one of the most basic human rights, in fact), not a privilege like driving. A "license" for parenting would be yet another way to demonize poor people, unmarried women, and certain religious and ethnic minorities. You seriously want the government determining who is fit to have children before the fact? Are you so ignorant of history that you're unaware of western nations' dirty history of sterilizing poor, minority, and native women against their will well into the 1970s?

We don't make people proactively prove they're safe and not violent before we let them live in society. You get your fundamental human rights, and if you abuse them by abusing your kids or harming someone else, you lose your parental rights, go to prison, or face other consequences.

[identity profile] raichu100.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well said.

[identity profile] chelonianmobile.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Best solution would be a form of temporary sterilisation applied to everyone at birth. It gets reversed when you can prove you're responsible enough to use it properly.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait... what about health risks?
