Same here, OP.

Just curious, in what culture exactly is "girly" used as a negative term towards girls? That seems like a very poorly-worded insult.

Western culture? Okay, maybe it sounds a bit harsher than it is, but I did grow up in an environment (not just talking about people, but media too) that gave me the feeling that being girly was a bad thing. I think it's quite recent that people started criticising this "real women don't wear dresses" trope.

Girly comes with a lot of baggage in usage and often people use it to make someone appear young and stupid so they can demean them or ignore what they're saying. In my experience you get it like a sarcastic "you're so cute" that comes when someone disagrees with you but doesn't want to give proof so they resort to insulting your character instead.

Men will use "that's so girly" as an insult to other men since girly is the opposite of manly and all things manly are good and all things girly are bad as per general stereotype. Women who are "girly" are not allowed to exercise qualities associated with men (leadership, authority, etc.).

Also "girly" being used to describe anyone over let's say 18 just to be fair seems condescending to me. I know that doesn't apply to the secret since most of the shows are about HS students or younger just another way that girly gets applied in a negative context. It's closer to someone telling you that you're acting like a child than it is to "that's so feminine" at that point :/

I'm not arguing against the word or anything of the sort I'm just saying it can be really insulting fairly easily but not openly like calling someone a 4 letter word might be.

I'm from the UK, I am regularly told I'm very feminine (which I have no problem with), but I would be a bit miffed if someone told me I was girly. Definitely has... childish connotations?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-12 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Y'know, I really wish I had had access to manga like this when I was younger -- I think it would've helped me a lot with sorting my own sexuality out and being just a little more relaxed about it. But I'm happy they're out there now, and happier that you wrote this secret, OP! :D

(Anonymous) 2012-01-12 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
OP

Thank you. =)
Actually, I wish I had discovered them a bit earlier too. Sure, I read many boys' love stories, but it's not the same, you know? I watched some movies with Lesbian themes, but they didn't end very happily (The Children's Hour, Aimée und Jaguar, Heavenly Creatures...) Then I rewatched Sailor Moon, and Haruka/Michiru just blew me away. A functional, happy Lesbian couple that also gets a happy end. And then I wanted more and discovered this genre.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-12 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think I wrote this in my sleep. Every last word is perfect.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-12 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even consider seme/uke to be slash. The girly boy is very girly indeed, and they always make "the man" heterosexual except for this one case....

[identity profile] princesoup.livejournal.com 2012-01-12 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
d'awww a picture of girl friends

i liked that manga

everyone should read everything by hayashiya shizuru also especially hayate x blade because omg why is she so GOOD AT EVERYTHING

(Anonymous) 2012-01-12 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
This shouldn't be a secret, OP. It's great that those kind of manga make you feel good.

I'm not much into Japanese comics, but I have read a few of those and I liked them. I agree that the "roles" in the f/f relationships seem to be more equally portrayed and that's why I prefer them to other romances.
Do you happen to have a few nice examples? I'd like to read more of this kind of stuff :)

I wonder if there are also some good stories about women not in High-School anymore. Anyone got some recs for me? <3

(Anonymous) 2012-01-12 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Girl Friends is definitely great, and Kisses, Sighs and Cherry Blossom Pink by the same artist is also quite nice.

As for stories about adults, I think there's a manhwa called "12 Days" you might like.

Also, as a part of Haru Natsu Aki Fuyu, there's a story called "First Kiss" that is quite good, about two adult women who think the other one has moved on. (The other stories in this manga are also okay, but they kind of enforce this seme/uke clichés a bit and have some unfortunate implications. Well, the artist and author are famous for boys' love manga...)

There's also Blue Friend, which is kind of interesting, but I think it's a bit rushed and a bit too dysfunctional for my taste.

Also, Sailor Moon is quite a nice read. Haruka and Michiru are absolutely amazing.

Well, I'm not really an expert at all, I was just skimming Lilicious. I hope someone else has recs too.

Strawberry Panic? It's rather fluffy and loose on plot though. I've only read the first volume. I bought it mostly for the art and the outfits the characters wear

[identity profile] mrtoulouse.livejournal.com 2012-01-12 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Anything by Hiyori Otsu is a good read, her stories are very down-to-earth. I cannot recommend her enough. Amano Shuninta drew a non-Highschool two-shot 'Sweet Guilty Love Bites'; the second story is one of my favourites. I think the rest of her stuff is mostly non-Highschool, too. Warning for some actual yuri in her works, if you want to avoid that, but it's mild.

Dynasty-Scans is a good place to do your reading, they seem to have most shoujo-ai series catalogued on their reader and upload new stuff about every week.

These are also reasons why I like femmeslash and yuri. There's also a lot less cliche' garbage storylines and stupid characters. A lot of shoujo manga that isn't f/f suffers from this too with the guy characters being cut and paste assholes.

It's nice to see it gets other people besides me mad in different forms of media where being bisexual or a lesbian is "just a phase."

Agreed. Yuri isn't perfect and there's skeevy stuff for it, too, but I feel like the really good yuri is way closer to being on the mark of portraying a somewhat realistic and healthy couple than most yaoi/BL and even het manga are. Even the best stuff there can be pretty off.

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2012-01-12 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just gonna sit here and wait for recs. I'd like to get into the genre but I've found very few stuff that I liked.

I'm not even a lesbian and I love manga like this. I guess because there's so much internalized misogyny among women and it's rare to see stories about two girls who aren't related and who have a close relationship. And the art in shoujo-ai stuff is usually so well-done and pretty, too

(Anonymous) 2012-01-12 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I have to wonder, what kind of yaoi have you read? I'm not exactly an avid reader, but I've only found one where the uke was super feminised (Okane ga nai). In all the others the seme and uke looked fairly similar, in regards of masculinity.

I'm a lesbian and I love yuri, can even relate to a lot of stories, but the idea that yuri is free from problems while yaoi/slash isn't bothers me. Like it's being made into a versus thing (not saying that is what you meant by your secret, OP). I've found some BL stories that broke the stereotypes just as helpful to me as yuri stories in coming to terms with my sexuality. I don't know, I guess I'm just sick of some yuri fans talking about how stupid yaoi fangirls are, how they fetishize homosexuality, when yuri itself isn't free from problems (and this does not make the genre bad!).

Meh, I honestly find yuri boring and sometimes kinda creepy so I think I'll stick to my femmslash.

[identity profile] ansley15.livejournal.com 2012-01-12 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, SO same here! Hey, straight girls get to have their adolescent, cheesy fantasies. I never got to have mine, so I indulge in "girl's love" now to over compensate :)

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2012-01-12 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
I find I like some GL and not others. I probably gravitate more towards BL because I love gratuitous angst and GL tends to side with fluffy waff. I'm basically here to camp for recs. :P I have yet to find anything I liked more than Oniisama e (or really anything but Riyoko Ikeda). Delicious melodramatic angst, yesss.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-12 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem I have with yuri manga is that I can't find any that are about women. That's a problem in manga in general, but I don't like reading sex content about high school aged characters. I guess I'd just like to read stories about casual f/f romance between two women -- something like one of Fujiyama Hyouta's more downstated manga.
