This. Once you just find it within yourself to let go of an abusive friendship, it's like an immediate upsurge in your quality of life. It's even worth whatever knee-jerk outrage you might experience from said friend, 'cause eventually, they'll quiet down and leave.

This!

Oh shut up, you moron. I'm as pro-choice as the next pro-choicer, but responding to pro-lifers with hatred and insults is not the way to go. Nor is it going to change anyone's opinion on abortion. It's just immature and pathetic.

I'm commenting on this purely for choice of background. I love that painting and have it hanging over my fireplace. Kudos.

Ah.

See I actually think we agree, sort of.

You're right in that those are very much real issues, and why almost always vigilantes are a bad idea.

It's just where I think we differ, is that in a select number of extreme situation they're an unpleasant necessity, and that for anything below that they're not acceptable*.

The monopoly on violence in a society needs to remain in the hands of the state, except when situations develop where the state is unable to self regulate. However, the number of those situations is intensely rare, and every time has to be balanced against the moral evils of engaging in vigilantiism.

I suppose one could make a more compelling argument for it, but like you said it's very similar to the issue with autocracies, fundamentally if you have it functioning with moral drive and purpose, it is far more effective (slightly more nuanced then that but eh), except the system always, and inherently falls apart or becomes corrupt, which leads to a negative situation far outweighing the good done through it.

*If batman wants to go around beating up poor people and minorities, he can join the police. I find the idea that 'oh, as long as he doesn't kill them it's cool more then a little problematic'.

[identity profile] mandyseley.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Gotta say, I actually agree, here. I had my doubts, pretty darn serious doubts, but sitting down to watch the show, it surprised me by being fairly entertaining. No, it's not the same, but Bugs Bunny seems to thrive on constant updates (http://www.shortpacked.com/2005/comic/book-1-brings-back-the-80s/01-just-a-toy-store/a-17/), not a set formula. Remember that the show is trying to appeal to today's kids, not to adults with rose-tinted nostalgia goggles.

Lola is definitely a different character than she used to be. If anything, I would have expected her to have Tina's personality, but it's obvious they set up Bugs and Daffy's "girlfriend" characters so that both would have the same dynamic of the straight man and the wacky antics character.

Is it perfect? No, but it was better than I was expecting, once I gave it a shot.

It sounds like you're the only one being passive-aggressive about it.

The OP has obviously tried to get into the series and couldn't. No big deal. But don't pretend there aren't people in either fandom who treat fans of the "other team" like shit. Hell, I'm a fan of BBC Sherlock and even I'll admit that the fandom has a tendency to be ridiculously aggressive and superior towards those who prefer the movies over the BBC series.

[identity profile] 0o0f.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
He is a pretty difficult character to like.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-16 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Whoa, whoa, chill out, man. As far as I know, people are allowed to reply to secrets however they'd like so long as it's not a personal attack.

[identity profile] mandyseley.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, Lola's sudden switch in Space Jam was so... yikes. Even though she's played as being "strong" it's obvious her purpose was to be eye candy to Bugs and eventually to fall for him so the "main character" can get a girl at the end, as the formula demands.

I don't mind if people don't like New Lola, but I'll never believe that Old Lola was a better or more interesting character.

[identity profile] 0o0f.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get it.. the old Lola looks a lot more sexually provocative than the new one.

Though actually, I do prefer the old design better.. it's just a lot cuter, imo, and I remember her so fondly in Space Jam. I actually had a pet rabbit IRL that I named "Lola" after her.

I think both their designs are ugly as butts so I'm unhappy either way. Though as a kid I always imagined it was me in the game and not whatever sprite it was supposed to be, so I don't care at all whether it's a tomboy or a girly-girl representing "me" in the game.

It would suck if these guys had personalities and tomboyish-personalty Crys was replaced with ultra girly Lyra, but they don't so it's easy to insert your preferred personalities on them. Plus pokemon has a good mix of tomboyish and girly female playable characters anyway.

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Uh...I posted an opinion? Like everyone ELSE in the whole thread?

What? People who don't have the same opinion CAN'T comment now? Is that some new internet rule?

Besides, I think you took more offense to this than I did to the initial post, of which, I didn't have much.

I expressed why I like Kotone. Apparently that's some how wrong now.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-16 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
OP here. Yeah, that was pretty much it. :( I couldn't care less that she looks like she got a makeover from John Kricfalusi, but they totally turned her into a stupid stalker ditz... It's pretty damn clear you can make a funny female character without resorting to harmful stereotypes like that, the 90s WB cartoons proved that. But I guess they aren't using the same writers as those now (in fact, I hope not, considering). I think the only show that seems to know how to write good comedic female characters nowadays is My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic (and I know that sounds like a gratuitous mention, but it's true).

Sorry if I overreacted. Your icon made your comment come across as aggressive-ish to me.

[identity profile] sadiekate.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I think you are strong and amazing for making this choice, which I know is not an easy one. It makes me happy to see you are getting support here, and I hope that you have good support in real life, too.

[identity profile] frostoria.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Look at Rorschach, who's far from being a pretty boy, yet having a fair number of fans. I think vigilantes in general are just very interesting to most people.

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't exactly have any neutral icons in my thing. >> It's the only one I have that can sorta be considered "neutral."

Sorry of the icon made it seem bad. ^^;;

Same here. I can't put my finger on why, but I am close to bored with Sherlock by comparison. I admit it probably has a bit to do with my tired feelings about Moffat lately affecting my expectations, but although I've enjoyed this season so far I'm not hooked in that fangirly show-me-to-the-fic! way.

I've seen everyone all over Tumblr getting so emotional and filled with dread over the upcoming ep and it's honestly just silly to me. We all know he's not going to die. I wish I could be that invested in it, or as invested as I was in S1, but I'm just not. :/

[identity profile] frostoria.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I wonder why so many people cheered when he killed Maverick, yet doesn't agree with his philosophy.

[identity profile] bethynyc.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Good luck!

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
+1000. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. It's not worth trying to salvage a "friendship" with someone that toxic.

[identity profile] luxshine.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Not the only one. I've had a lot of discussions with my aunt over my insistance that the movies aren't that far off as people say...

[identity profile] imati-lau.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. My life got a little better after I stoped being his friend, but it was really impresive how my life and everyone around him greatly improved the moment he was fired. It was as if he was this giant black hole of negative emotions and when he left, everyone felt so much relief...

And you're right. We really don't care what he plans to do to get his vengeance, this peace is so much worth it.
