I was born in 1990 and grew up as a child watching the repeats of the Muppet Show that was on every Sunday afternoon. So there are some of us of the younger generation that did grow up with the Muppets to an extent and understood who Jim Henson was at a young age. You shouldn't have to have been a child during the Muppets boom to appreciate the work of Jim Henson and the passion and enthusiasm he had.

Yup. The Simpsons was downright rude for its day... until years later when South Park came along.

I always did too.

I hope by "being brutally honest" you mean serious critique and not "this fucking sucks" then. The latter really doesn't hold water.

Through your LJ.

...the last time I uploaded something to my gallery was several months ago...

...so you've become the next Vermeer since then or something? I shouldn't judge you on your artistic merits by what you have showing in your dA? I call it like I see it. Oh, wait.

Of course you don't have to be the best to judge something (it's Ebert's Law, actually!) but when people are still learning, use some tact. Help them instead of hindering them.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
It pretty much is. If some's gone now, that's probably not the worst thing.

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Of course I give serious crit, saying something fucking sucks doesn't help.

No, I just hardly ever update my dA, that's pretty much what it means.

I actually do try to help them, I just get angry when people don't care enough to improve (I don't express my anger when I crit like I'm doing in this thread), but I usually drop it when they say don't bother.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-27 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
That's nuts.

This is a good post and you should feel good.

No anon, you are the problems

Chiming in late as a Classical Languages major to say thank you for your support of Latin and Attic Greek.

Vale!

Some idiot decided that Native Americans were the only people who used feathers for decoration ever, and so all modern use of feathers as hair decoration were exploiting Native American culture. It's pretty dumb and I don't recommend putting too much bother into it.

It makes me kind of sad that everyone in this thread going "It is not good to stigmatize people with legitimate disorders" feels the need, without exception, to add a disclaimer of "but those people who only think they have it and use it as an excuse, yeah fuck them." Are fake Aspies/Aspies who avoid responsibility really that common that everyone has to tack that on when discussing mostly-decent people with real problems? Really?

[identity profile] morganlucas41.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm not sure that Brittany isn't in love with Santana - to me it seems that might be true, or maybe Brittany's just characterized as vapid and out of touch. Either is possible, IMO, lol. But there does seem to be a lot of passion behind that line, and Santana does look at Brittany when she sings it...I think I took it more as, Santana imagining what it would be like to lose Brittany. *shrugs* Either way, I liked it!

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think people are mostly complaining about self-diagnosed people who excuse their jerk behaviour using a mental condition.

[identity profile] xxsomeoneelsexx.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly yes, this thread is yet another bitchfest about people using their disorders as an excuse. (I feel like we have these once a week like clockwork, wtf) What I find sad is that even the people discussing how it is wrong to stigmatize people are throwing in something about the fakers are annoying. It kept striking me as some kind of disclaimer, like they feel obligated to complain about them. Weird, and sad.

You are QUITE judgemental. Are you a vocal coach? Are you an accomplished professional singer? No? I could have sworn you must have been, since you are so well informed about the intricacies of singing and feel that you can tell people how they may or may not do it.

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I could go either way in how Brittany feels about Santana, but I think that's how she'd come across to Santana up to then, so she's feels rejected. But I still stand by saying that I love the raw emotion in Naya's voice and that it's very true to the character.

If you think you need to be a voice teacher or a professional to know the intricacies of vocal technique, then you need to reassess. All you need, honey, is training (minimal at that), which I have, to know that Naya was doing more yelling than singing. This happens when people have to reach for notes. It's not rocket science.

Also, generally it's considered bad singing to not be able to hit the notes. Professional singers are advised not to, so yes, Naya should not. On the other hand, I don't really like Amber's voice, but she always hits her notes. Naya doesn't have Amber's strength or range and it showed.

If you were trying to be an ass, you have succeeded most admirably. Congrats.

[identity profile] forever-alone.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
The sheer magnitude of the kneejerkiness here is both pathetic and disturbing. It's more telling than anything else that you seem to intrinsically link "artist admitting they have a mental illness" with "using mental illness as an excuse to be a piece of shit or appear special." There will always be liars and fakers and assholes out there, but letting that color your perception of all artists who decide to put themselves out there and talk about their conditions is ridiculous. But I think you realize how ridiculous your views on this are, because I don't know why else you would've brought out the what-the-fuckery of this colorblind stuff. Come on, OP.

SORRY IF THIS SOUNDS HARSH, MY OTHER PERSONALITY WAS TYPING FOR ME

(Anonymous) 2012-01-27 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Too many of them seem completely unaware that what they know is specialized knowledge and not everyone has it

Truth, but the sad part is they're unaware due to being constantly belittled for trying to make a living out of art rather than brain surgery.

"Oh you're studying art? Cool, my 5 year-old paints with her fingers in kindergarten too!"
"Hey I know a professional artist - he's an attention whoring dramatic crackhead who fakes disability to get benefits from the taxes WE pay because he can't occupy a damn job using his ~skills~!"

Unless you grew up among artists, musicians and other creative professionals, you've probably been showering in these comments everyday since the first time you picked up a pencil. You'd be brought up believing you're a horrible delinquent up to no good/only there to look pretty while everyone else is supposedly mature and wise beyond their years, majoring in a "real" subject so they can cure cancer and make "real" contributions to ~∽~∽~SOCIETY~∽~∽~ later on. Some of them think amateurs are wasting their efforts because they believe their own efforts and struggles are also in vain.

[identity profile] morganlucas41.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed on the emotion when Naya sings that line - and also that this is what keeps me coming back to the show: in the midst of all the madness, there are some truly great emotional moments :)

[identity profile] forever-alone.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
I am so late with my reply and you're anon so I doubt you'll even see this comment, but I just wanted to say hi to a fellow student of the Czech language. :) In case you do read this - are you still learning, or are you fluent now? I'm also curious how you learned it. Here in the U.S. there aren't a lot of resources to learn Czech with.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-27 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
Only like 2 of my friends are art students, and I do see them making fun of bad art from time to time. One of them can draw/paint very well, and one of them sucks ass. But to be honest, when they make fun of art, it's more like they already hate the person and they are just finding more reasons to hate them.

It's uncomfortable when they get like that, but OP, honestly if the chance of getting made fun of is scarier to you than having fun drawing a picture, then just save yourself from the high blood pressure problems and don't draw. Honestly, most people won't give you shit if you draw badly unless you're an obnoxious person, which you don't sound like.

Personally I'm still a bit :S about using 'cunt' as an insult because of the implications of using any synonym of 'vagina' as an insult... but yeah, whenever I hear people say it's a slur against women I get O_o - as far as I'm concerned, 'cunt' is the worst thing you can call a man. Which has completely different connotations.

Apparently 'spaz' is not considered offensive (or is considered less offensive) in the US because 'spastic' was never used as a medical term over there so it went straight from the original meaning to the slang meaning without being associated with disabled people in between. It took me a while to realise that and I was very shocked when American TV shows would use it so casually.
