This, so much. The fandom's obsession with making him mild mannered, and making his naivety about human culture into his entire personality really bugs me. That is a small fraction of who he is. Castiel is a BAMF angel. He is a soldier. Yes, he doesn't get human culture and therefore is a bit nerdy at times. But don't mistake that for weakness, being mild mannered, or anything except a strong, powerful soldier who will kick your ass if necessary.

I'm not a huge AU fan, but I'd totally read an AU where he was a soldier or police officer.

Exactly. Besides, most of the most BAMFs of history were utter nerds in their genius. They just could pull off charisma and kill a man with only a stare.

I've seen plenty of fics with Dean as a soldier, and Castiel as the doting docile housewife (ugh). But there are far too few AUs where Castiel gets to be anything other than a mild-mannered [insert non-threatening job here], while Dean gets to be the badass [insert dirty, tough, manly job here].

IA. He might not understand human culture or job procedures (like the FBI thing), but once it was explained to him he could probably do anything.

Also...part of the reason those librarian/housewife/priest/etc AUs bug me is because I can't imagine Castiel being satisfied with something so mundane. Cleaning houses, sorting books, and baking cakes (all while waiting for Dean to come home from whatever it is he does during the day) doesn't sound like something he'd be happy with. He'd probably want to be in the midst of the action, being a soldier or a policeman or a...I don't know...a freaking kickboxer! Hell, a missionary would make more sense than a priest. At least then he'd get to fly all over the world helping people.

That's always bothered me a bit too, I mean, I'll read whatever as long as it's well-written, and those cliches can sometimes work, but there isn't nearly enough of BAMF!Castiel.

Though I swear I've read a few soldier!AUs.... there are some superhero!Cas AUs out there too, and Dean's usually the Lois Lane, so there's that.

as much as I love my kinky priest and teacher fics, I have to say this is something I've wanted more than once. I'm guessing the dearth of soldier!AUs is caused by a desire for AUs to have lighter or fluffier subject matter than the show itself, but it's not like the SPN fandom has ever been known for its sanity, so I don't know where they're all hiding!

Sorry, it just bothers me! When I watched the series I was SO psyched that Dean/Cas were a big couple, only to discover that the vast majority of fandom wasn't listening when everyone was talking about how damned bad ass Angels were, and how they were SOLDIERS. Instead I get a woobie Cas who is Mr. couldn't hurt a fly. WTF.

He faced down a Archangel knowing he was going to die. He taunted powerful beigns and spat in their face. HE DOUBLE CROSSED THE DEMON KING OF HELL, AND GOT AWAY WITH IT. People, we need more Soldier/warrior/Bad Ass Cas in AUs! And the canon fics too!

Angelic soldier or human soldier? Cause I've read both. And only like, one librarian one, though I admit there are a ton of professor ones that I've seen. And Ive read FBI/cop ones too... I feel weird now reading all these comments that people haven't - makes me wish I tagged my bookmarks better so that I could make a quick rec list for people or something...

Iunno, maybe I just hang out in different circles than most people...? (but I just normally browse deancastiel, ao3, and kink memes and I'm sure everyone here hangs out in one of those areas)

My least favorite are AUs where Cas is the professor and Dean is the Best! Student! Ever!

Are we watching the same show? Dean hates research, which is the au equivalent of studying. And I always thought Cas learned more from Dean than Dean from Cas.
