Kimi ni Todoke? There's not much reverse harem in the first place, but Kazehaya is really sweet.

Guess what? Girls got the best guys who really loved them.

Aah man, Yuki and Tohru. Memories! I shipped them too, but I liked Kyo/Tohru as well so I wasn't too disappointed. Shinogu/Hatsumi on the other hand was a damn tragedy.

I usually like the nice guys, but there were exceptions... especially when she actually ended up with him. I remember reading Tokyo Mew Mew when I was younger and I hated Masaya so much--he was so boring. Still pissed that she didn't end up with Ryou.

Mytho was never in love with Ahiru, though. The feelings he always felt for Princess Tutu were hope, he just didn't understand what hope was before he had his heart back. Ahiru didn't really end up with anyone in the end, but I wish she'd ended up with Fakir :c

Man, I understand the point of the secret, but I really have to disagree with Mytho/Duck, and Tohru/Yuki... |D

Throughout the whole show, Duck only really likes Mytho because he looked so sad, and wanted to help him, but she acknowledges that she never really knew that much about him. (Episode 12, IIRC). She likes the idea of him, the doll like state of him, but she doesn't really know him.

She got together with Fakir not because he was the "bad boy" to Mytho's "nice guy", but because she got to actually know Fakir, instead of putting him on a pedestal, like she did with Mytho. She got to know Fakir's faults, and good sides, and what he's really like under all the fronts he put up, and in the end, it's because she got to see all of him, and he got to see all of her (metaphorically and literally) that they make a good couple. Even though, yes, she's a duck at the end. Fakir sees the side that she hides from Mytho, (such as the fact that she's really just a duck), and he doesn't reject her, or judge her, but he just accepts her.

On the flip side, I was really struck in the manga by how, well, kind of good Kyo had it, family-wise compared to Yuki. Now, I'm not saying that Kyo's family wasn't incredibly fucked up, because it was, but Kyo had his "father" Kazuma, and IIRC, it seemed like he definitely had a sort of family in the martial artists at the dojo he studied at. Yuki, meanwhile, had no one except Akito, and I'm not even going to go into how fucked up her life was.

Because Kyo had Kazuma, I really think he was able to see Tohru as herself, instead of placing her into the role of "mother" that I really think that Yuki did. Because Yuki had no real good family at home, even just that one person, I think he really latched onto the idea of Tohru as a "mother" figure, which isn't the best place to start a relationship IMO.

/has a lot of feelings about this

I don't know, I mean, I shipped Yuki/Tohru in the anime but when I read the manga a few years later, it was definitely Kyo/Tohru all the way for me. Fruits Basket is the ultimate OT3 for me though! I was a bit put out in the end when the mangaka played down Yuki's feelings for Tohru.

I wouldnt say Yuki's a 'nicer' person than Kyo either, really. They both had moments of dickishness, but they're both good people who cared a lot for Tohru.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the exact opposite. I always ship the heroine with the jerk. :D

(I loved Hatsumi with Ryoki, wanted Duck with Fakir, adored Kyo with Tohru (though admittedly I loved Yuki/Machi even more ♥)

Have you ever read Kare First Love, OP? The heroine falls for a super nice guy in the story.

....Yuki was nice? >_>

*was a total Kyo and Kyo/Tohru stan at one point*

And agree with the first comment. Kazahaya seems nice. Granted I haven't read much of that manga series in ages. I HATE when shoujo series like that bring in the "rival" who's a manipulative dick like that. :/ I get angry and then bored and then leave it.

I read about the guy on wikis, so I have no intention of reading more for a while.

I stopped reading FB after Yuki started going out with Machi(?), the student council girl. I just felt like she was kind of tossed in for Yuki to get his happy ending rather than Tohru and Yuki falling in love and Kyo eventually patching things up with Kagura. I felt like having Yuki pigeon hole his feelings for Tohru as Mommy issues was really a bit of a copout rather than dealing with the idea of Tohru choosing and hurting someone.

(Oddly I initially liked KyoxTohru, but as time went on, I liked Yuki better for her; I felt like they could just relate to each other better.)

[identity profile] greeneyed.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well... if the girl from Full Moon ended up with the blond guy (forgot their names :( ), that would be quite ... unfortunate.

[identity profile] hunter-san.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yuki was nice? My vague recollections is that he was niceish but a dick to others. I especially didn't like how he picked on Kyou because it reminded me of bullies and I figured Kyou was right to be angry all the time considering how he was being treated and his looming future.

I don't know how the manga ended though, maybe he improved. Volume 11 was the latest published when I lost interest.

[identity profile] hells-hikari.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Kyou was nicer once he got over himself. Or well, at least there was a certain genuineness to his kindness, while Yuki's kindness always felt a bit calculated, at least in the beginning, which he also admitted. And good lord, did this manga end in a satisfying way. Okay, not every aspect was satisfying, but the Kyou/Tohru part definitely was.

Oh man Furuba. I only read that one recently. At the beginning, I was totally taken with Yuki/Tohru, but as I kept reading, Kyo grew into this really sweet and mellow boy, and I couldn't not love him. And Yuki/Machi was really cute too.
I love nice guys as the "winner", but I can't deny that I also like seeing the girl get together with the jerk that's nice only to her. What I've never really liked was the emo, mysterious and angsty guy winning.

Heeey, Fakir's nice...eventually. And to be fair, Yuki's not always nice, he can be a little cruel in his own way--just less outwardly aggressive than Kyo. I don't know the other examples, but for those two I think there's more going on than just the "nice guy" and "the jerk/bad boy"--both of those series, particularly Tutu, are better than that.

I kinda get what you mean, though, it's weird (and a little troubling) how shoujo has this trend of the "winning" guy being kinda a jerk to the girl in the beginning. (And, really, vice-versa for a lot of shounen or harem romances.) I know that's part of the fun but it's kinda refreshing when you see a nice, normal couple in anime that treat each other with respect. XD (I think that's part of the reason I like Chihayafuru so much--both of the guys in the love triangle have their flaws but neither really fits into "nice guy" and "bad boy" cliches, particularly once they get older.)

I don't know most of these shows, but man I feel you anon. Though at this point I'm not as disappointed when my ships don't sail because I know it was never gonna happen anyway. I'm just so burnt out on the "jerk has his heart melted by the heroine" dynamic. No matter how many different ways I've seen it done, it still ends up being predictable and unexciting.
