That's a real possibility - look at Alan Moore. But at the same time I don't think you're going to run out of SFF innovators just because a few new clichés get enshrined in the genre.

MORE ugly bearded old men? I think I know who the fatty is, but who is the redhead with the derp expression next to him?

Let's turn with into a strange squick/phobia thread

Pet, I get it. You have a beard phobia. You have been saying this again and again over the last week. Everyone has strange phobias or squicks.

Whenever I read a fic or see a picture that has people with ridiculously large penises or breasts I have to hit the back button.

Oh, OP. This happens all the time, in every genre, in every media, in every aspect of human society.

And like the first commenter said, this hasn't and will never stop the people who keep trying to innovate, anyway. c:

I know GRRM, but who is the other one?

So nothing has happened yet, but you're convinced one outcome will happen over the other. Seems a little defeatist and creating something to fret over.

Personally, I'm so over Joss Whedon. He's really awesome at somethings and really sucky at others and pretends to be a huge feminist but really just uses that as an excuse to be weirdly sexist. He's also really good at sneaking in his own weird fetishes but once you start watching all of his work it gets a little creepy.

I also think GRRM has some really fucked up ideas and isn't all that wonderful.

But do carry on!

GRRM sucks though.

Of course he sucks less than most genre authors, but if an ~imitator~ pops up to steal his throne (see what I did there?) I would not be mad. Maybe then we could get a book that shouldn't have been edited down to 50 pages when all was said and done.

There's nothing remotely new or original about two sexist creepy white men writing the same old creepy sexist white-centric stories that have always been written.

Honestly I'm really excited for the future of cinema/tv, and stuff like Game of Thrones and Avengers is a part of that. As much as people dislike sequels, reboots and adaptations, I feel like the quality of the most popular stuff is improving. The biggest movies of this year (Avengers and Hunger Games) were both excellent and really good creators like Joss Whedon and Christopher Nolan are some of the most popular. Yes, there will be imitators and there will still be a lot of shit. But I'd rather Joss has a lot of imitators than, say, Michael Bay.

Someone imitating Joss Whedon?

... That's most of Marvel isn't it?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-28 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder if that's what Joss is going to look like in 40 years.

Chill out dude. Yes, that tends to happen: Popular stories become tropes from others being inspired, but that doesn't mean the original stops being appreciated. I mean, if Wizard of Oz came out today people would think it was the most cliche thing ever, but it's still enjoyed as a classic.

If you're talking about darker or grittier fantasy, it's been done. A lot. The other ones just weren't as popular.

Are those two...all that original? I mean, I love their work and I love Joss as a human in general (...not so much GRRM), but I don't think the strength of their stuff is in its overall originality, it's in the depth and the specific characters and the complexity. But, like, space westerns and sci-fi action and medieval monarchy-fighting has totally been done and will continue to be done. I guess maybe their styles could be imitated...but we'd all recognize Buffy Speak right away, right?

This doesn't make any sense to me...?

Any time anything develops immense popularity, there are always inspired-bys, imitators, and blatant rip-offs of said thing. So should nothing be popular? But even then, everyone is inspired by SOMETHING to some degree or another, as none of us live in a bubble, some are just better at disguising it it or were inspired by something more obscure.

So I'm not sure what the alternative would be here.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-28 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
Who would want to imitate GRRM anyway? He's a shitty writer. On the other hand, sometimes I get severely depressed because I know I'll never be able to write like Terry Pratchett.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-28 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
Essentially you've said that you don't like trends, but trends come and go only to be replaced by the next big thing. I can't understand not liking it because it doesn't hinder new inspiration and tends to do the opposite with people who are sick of the trend and want something new. I can get being sick of if because that doesn't equal hating it. The same old shit gets boring. That I can get behind.

Joss Whedon?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-28 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
Lol? Like there was any discernable formula in what joss whedon does. He's all over the place, and especially the trashy approach he sometimes chooses is what makes his stuff so good. Can't be copied.

As for Martin: I love the series, but the books are waaaaaaaay overrated.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-28 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah because THEY are not imitating ANYONE amirite.
