16. Agreed. I liked HP when I started reading it eight years ago, but then I started reading Philip Pullman and Garth Nix and Diana Wynne Jones and I just totally do not see what I ever saw in HP.

Hell, another movie of any of Diana Wynne Jones books.

11. Tell us when you write your book so we can join in the fun!

13. I'm glad my rp friends are flexible and we flip roles often so no one gets pigeonholed like that.

22. You can watch other things you know. Girls are allowed to be interested in other things. I'm not a big freak, but I love me some action, some ass kicking, some blood, some guts, something that has me on the edge of my seat and last time I checked, I'm still a girl and still considered average. Besides, you're allowed to develop your own interests outside of the herd you know.

I'm not saying Potter is great literature, but I'd sure like to hear your theory about what makes a series of glorified Dungeons & Dragons fanfics so much more worthy of attention.

22. I grew up with guys all around me, so I love guy stuff. I learned to love violence and plot. Romance is okay, but I love it when characters take a beating and dish it back out.

16. Oh come onnnnnnnnnn. I'm not a HP fan. At all. So it pains me to say, but Dragonlance is such poorly written crap that it makes HP look like a bloody classic. I could think of 20 fantasy books that deserve a good movie more than Dragonlance or HP.

4. Tell the voice to shut up, and write. :) I do know the feeling, though - I have that voice too. You've got to
ignore it, and if you're really worried, get a (good) beta reader who can help you with stuff. Not because
I think you're probably a bad writer - bad writers don't think they're bad writers. I just firmly believe that every
single person needs a beta reader, and it actually helps your confidence, rather than hurt it. It should, at least.

11. LOL! That's actually really awesome. And you're not alone - I have two friends who write their brother and sister
characters with full knowledge that if anyone wrote fics for the book, the brother and sister would be shipped. They
can't wait to read it.

19. You can be a BNF and still be a sane person. :) Plus, I don't know that fandom but a lot of the time, BNFs are okay as
long as they don't expect everyone to know who they are and all that crap.

[identity profile] drmoonpants.livejournal.com 2007-07-23 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
6. >___> YES ♥ I mean... I mean, I always feel sort of obligated to denigrate and mock my love of the Xeno-games, so as to pre-empt all of my friends who are too cool for them and don't like, you know, reading in-game databases for six hours, and they can be pretty pretentious and awkward, but GOD DAMN IT THEY KNOW WHAT I LIKE AND THEY GIVE IT TO ME SO GOOD WHEN IT COUNTS. The vast majority of moments I've found most passionately affecting in video games, when I look back on it, have been in Xenogears and Xenosaga. LAME? MAYBE. DON'T CARE.

lol, tl;dr, me

16. I agree with others who have commented re: lololololololol

26. ...agreed, to my vague surprise and embarrassment! Although I would add a caveat of "and if the ones there are did not generally end up being badly mishandled," although maybe you've covered that with "non-stereotypical" and "genuinely likeable." (Here I am thinking of season 7 Willow on BtVS. >_-)

There's nothing wrong with you. I too prefer action and violence (although not series with excessive amounts) over drama and romance. I find the latter a bit boring at times... so you're not alone!

22

[identity profile] thejennabides.livejournal.com 2007-07-23 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
#22 - No, of course there's nothing wrong with enjoying shounen anime and disliking shoujo. But I'm unclear on what you mean by "deeper meanings", since there is action anime that involves little more than speed and/or violence; and on the flip side of the coin, I think that there is a lot more going on than slapstick humor and cute faces in at least two of the shows you mentioned (I don't recognize the first one and can't speak to that). I'm not trying to get you to give them another chance; I'm just saying there's meaning in humanity and human relationships, too.

Would your friends really turn on you if you tried introducing them to a new anime? You don't have to start with something bloody; surely there's a thought-provoking anime that is still "pretty" enough for them? It's hard to make suggestions since you didn't mention anything that you do like, but I'm sure you could find something. Good luck.

I'm really sorry. Being online has been a bit of a chore for me, and I've been avoiding it as much as I can except for certain things here and there. I'm also pretty bad at commenting due to the fact that my internet times out a lot, so I get frustrated (especially with DA).

But I'm really touched and flattered, and hope when I return to drawing, I can gather enough confidence to reply to comments. This secret made my day!
