It's the fact he's human that makes the story so heartbreaking. Rewatch the scene where Moses returns the ring. Watch Ramses' face. You can SEE his heart breaking.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-04 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, Moses was a dick in that movie anyway. He finds out he's adopted and runs away from home, then comes back to kill his nephew and free a bunch of people who he really couldn't give two shits about before a) he found out he was one of them and b) God threatened him. By far the least sympathetic character in the PoE.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-04 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Because finding out your adopted and that the guy you thought was your father was behind the genocide of your biological 'people' is no big, right? And fear of the repercussions of killing a guy totally isn't enough to spook someone in to running away, yeah? Realizing that everything you thought you were was a sham? Just another Tuesday, know what I mean?

So, what I'm hearing here is if your world gets rocked to its core, you're a dick if you don't just shrug it off. Gotcha.

Geez.

Not touching on the religious shit here, because I'm probably stirring the wank enough here.

"then comes back to kill his nephew"

Uh, no, that was God who did that.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-04 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I see him as a traitor to the people who loved him and raised him tbh

He hadn't really interacted with them before, and at the beginning of the movie, they weren't People.

Then he found out he is one, and it actually got him thinking.

Also, he WARNED Ramses. He PLEADED with him. MULTIPLE TIMES. There is even and entire song where he's practically begging his brother to just let his people go because he knows it's ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE.

Prince of Egypt is my favorite animated movie and I'm not even religious. I love how it didn't portray the pharaoh as a typical "evil" villain, but as a normal human being.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-04 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
And that's what MAKES the movie. He breaks my heart every single time. Hell, that whole movie does. The animation is spectacular -- the amount of emotion that's communicated is ridiculous. The writing though. The WRITING. You ache for absolutely EVERYONE, and just go on and TRY to tell me that the relationship between Ramses and Moses isn't among the most amazing representations of brotherhood.

That's to say nothing about the music. I still get chills when I hear either "Deliver Us" or "The Plague Song". Guh.

Also, psht. Moses was TOTES better looking. Well, younger Moses, anyhow. :)

All of this.

Man, if only every DreamWorks movie was as good as the PoE.

I have to agree. Screw all the religious junk - this is just an amazing movie, with gorgeous music and brilliant animation.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-06 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's really an incredible story. The original is really little more than God dicking around with people (he's clearly capable of raining hellfire on Pharoah when the guy's slaughtering the Hebrew children, yet decides to save one child, let that child grow up in Pharoah's household; later appears to Moses in a way no one would believe, then has Moses lie to Pharoah about a religious gathering that requires the Hebrews to rob the Egyptians of all their nice clothes and jewelry, and then continually "hardens Pharoah's heart" rather than let the guy realize he's being duped on his own). It's just wat. Wat are you doing, God.

PoE actually told a human story.

I found Rameses to be a much more likable and sympathetic character than Moses in this movie.

I'm not going to debate religion, and I'm pretty sure everyone can agree that slavery is bad, but he just kinds of shows up and tries to threaten the way their society works with basically what amounts to "God said so" and "I grew up with you, and you owe it to me." Then a bunch of children died.

I really felt bad for the guy. Look at the position he's stuck in.

This - though I think that can be applied to the background characters as well. And come, Steve Martin and Martin Short as the priests? AWESOME [...and it doesn't hurt that their names amuse me >>;;]

That said, yeah slavery is horrible, but Rameses' reaction to what Moses was demanding, and for the reasons he was demanding it, are realistic. Telling a society to change 'Because [a god you don't believe in] says so!' just isn't usually going to work without a *lot* persuading of some type.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-05 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
out of curiosity are you trying to make the case here that the deaths of the Egyptian kids were more important than the deaths of the Hebrew kids? Because uuuhhh you don't seem to be taking that part into account.

I love this fucking movie. I watched an interview with Stephen Schwartz at work on Friday, and he performed "When You Believe" and I was tearing up at my desk. (Again.) And, er, homeboy kinda can't sing. Ramses was a fascinating villain, largely because Ralph Fiennes did such a great job with the voice, I think. And now I wanna watch it again. ♥

Yeah, it didn't help that they were shown having such a great relationship at the beginning of the movie then -poof- Moses goes missing and the next time he sees him well...He doesn't even seem to like Rameses anymore. /breaks her heart every time

(Anonymous) 2012-08-04 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
This movie made my little-kid-self feel like a terrible person for sympathizing with the guy who enslaved my ancestors.

Uh, you know that the Bible is not history, right?

Yeah, this movie was amazing, and the portrayal of him and Moses as brothers was just so perfect.

I owned this movie as a kid, but I don't think I gave it the appreciation it deserved - or at least it didn't stick in my memory like other feature animated films back then did. Totally going to rent it now.

I'm a Christian, and I normally dislike reading/watching religious themed stories, because they tend to sacrifice "good storytelling" for "preaching".

But this is one film I remember fondly, because it managed to make me sympathise with all the characters.
