But... 300? A comicbook movie about nothing more than guts, glory, and a lot of CGI abs? It's not a complex epic of a story. This ain't no Illiad we're talking about here.

Rinoa Heartilly, my god. "She's annoying, she's such a slut, she's useless" blah blah blah. I've yet to see anyone's reasons for hating her that weren't slut-shaming, sexist, or just plain stupid and ignoring any character development she got. It's fine to just say a character rubs you the wrong way and leave it at that instead of writing essays on what a stupid bitch they are.

Pretty much every female character on SPN, especially Bela, Jo, Ruby, and Meg. And recently Castiel since certain parts of the fandom have a massive hateboner for him.

IDK, any female character that gets bashed in a usually sexist context. We'd be here all day if I went through them all.

haters gonna hate

Haha this is a summary of the condition my class/friendgroup has been in for years in university.

._. get the positivity from else where. Or do fanshit for this on your own.

If you love character-driven stories, you're really going to love this.

I do! And I've heard high praise elsewhere, too.

it convinced me to snap up everything he's ever touched

Wow, now that is a recommendation!

Re: Shakespeare

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Although you could say that Shakespeare is overrated, and unenjoyable if you're not a fan of literature, etc, I don't think it's a stretch that his plays are referred to as masterpieces!

Your description of House of Leaves is exactly how I feel about China Mieville. I dropped Un Lun Dun like a hot rock when the binjas (ninjas who live in bins!) showed up.

Fair enough. (-:

Jack from LOST

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I did think it was funny when fandom would make fun of Jack in LOST (jearing cracks me up), but sometimes they were just desperately trying to find anything wrong with him and it was difficult to read discussions when Jack was one of my favorites.

I wouldn't say he was perfect but none of the LOST characters were, but I think his introduction in the pilot and his actions in the finale were perfection.

I vote we get one where you can pick to play Link's storyline, Zelda's storyline, Midna's storyline or Groose's storyline</strike! Mind, this will never happen, because it would take for-eve-errr to program.

It's not surprising, given that our culture encourages this. Notice how "home-wrecker" refers, not to a man who's cheating on his wife, but to the woman he's cheating with. Cuz clearly it's all HER fault, right?

Have you ever seen it performed live? I struggled reading it, but there's a local Shakespeare group that performs for free and it is a completely different experience. Also, I prefer the comedies.

LOL!

The first time I came across knotting in fic, I had no idea what it was (I've never owned a dog) and I had to go look it up. Fun times.

+1000000 to Rinoa

She's my second favorite FF character <3 I borrowed the game from a friend and they kept making snide comments about her before I even played. :/

Re: Characters with your name.

[personal profile] teaphile 2012-08-30 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I've always wondered how it is for people with common names. My name is never used for main characters, it's usually relegated to characters with one line, or who are only mentioned and never seen.

You know, I could swear Degrassi is part TARDIS or something. They have more sports teams and more gyms every time we look at the joint. We started off with the one multi-purpose gym, but now there's a weight room, a place with a bunch of other exercise equipment, a climbing gym, an indoor soccer field, a football field, an enormous Olympic-sized pool, and now, apparently a place to play fucking hockey...

Maybe it's just the fact that I went to a little podunk country school out in the middle of Bumblefuck, and we were limited to a football field (with a track around it) and a gymnasium. Is this a normal thing in Canada?

(...I ponder a lot of really stupid things about Degrassi, and that's one of them.)

(but more on-topic, OMG, I hope Adam gets a happy ending. He's one of the few characters on that show that I genuinely love and think is amazingly-written. The other two are Fiona and Holly J. I want them to have their own spinoff where they just run around having funny adventures around Toronto.)

Re: Shakespeare

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well the qualifier to this was just that you think someone is overrated, and I do think Shakespeare often gets too much credit for "inventing" themes that had been around long before he started writing.

My husband says that I have an invisible sign on my forehead that says "Tell me"... People are always confiding in me. :) Now I'm in training to be a mental health generalist. I'm good at listening, so I look forward to being in the field.

Whatever your religious beliefs, being "jewish" in america is often times an ethnic/cultural/family thing and not a strictly religious practice; I assume most shows and writers are just aiming in terms of this.

Yeah, if the show spends time to talk about a person who's dad is jewish and mom in non-jewsih/gentile and are completely oblivious to that reality and that tension, sure that's weird. But if it's like a passing mention "oh, I'm jewish/half-jewish" like... I feel like a lot of people do say that and do feel a part of the community in a cultural or familial respect, and maybe religious depending on their activity in the community.

If you have legitimate reasons (besides the fact that she has a vagina) to hate her, then hating her is fine. It's only misogynist if you hate a woman for existing because she is a woman.

Are you talking about Irene? I don't hate her (I like her, even), but I think Irene hate is legitimate if you do. She's a pretty terrible person.
