I agree. I'd love it if someone, on any show, would actually stop beating around the bush and actually portray two same-sex characters who happen to love each other.

Yeah I agree with everything you say.

Another thing that bothers me is that the ones featured on those relationships are always heterosexual men. I wouldn't mind if they never became a pairing if it was friendship about a gay and a heterosexual guy, hell even two gay guys. The dudebroes thing is just so overdone by now.

this is a cartoon, so maybe you'd be interested in comics? there's a few good queer relationships that are portrayed as just another relationship in the story. xavin & karolina from runaways, hulkling & wiccan from young avengers. shatterstar & rictor in...x-factor? x-force? i lose track lmao. northstar just married his partner as well, but the ones i mentioned above feature "main" characters involved with one another. and i dont know anything about dcu besides batwoman is a lesbian, so maybe someone else can help you there.

Really stupid story time, but the night before the finale I had a dream about watching the show and at the end (set a bit in the future) they were having a civil wedding with all the heroes there and then I woke up and was disappointed that didn't happen and then when the last episode was released later that day it got to the end and I had this "Wait, OMG, is it?" moment when the heroes all had somewhere to be and then two seconds later, "No, of course not, genius." But then I thought it really sucked that it was so "obvious" to me that it couldn't happen. Why does it have to be a big deal? Not that my dreaming-self comes up with very good storylines, but really, why does a confirmed relationship have to be so out of the cards. Blah.

The only thing that matters to any animation studio is $$$. They honestly don't care how offended, marginalized, etc anyone is because if they cater to the minority group they might lose the majority group, which means less $$$.

Subtext = slash fans will buy it ($$$) AND "I ain't gay bro see they ain't really gay" types will buy it ($$$)

Confirmed gay relationship = slash fans will buy it ($$$) BUT that NO HOMO contingent will not and the NO HOMO contingent spends a lot of $$$ on anime

This is also the reason there will never, EVER be a gay, lesbian, trans, etc Disney Princess.

Don't watch this, but I do sympathize; it would be nice if there were more LGBT romances in media (period), especially if the romance wasn't the focus of that media. I can't say I don't like subtext or bromance because I'd be lying, but it does get frustrating sometimes and I hate feeling like I'm accepting a consolation prize. "We won't put these two characters together, but we will tease the fuck out of it until you want to scream!"

The second film is the only one I'm interested in since the first is basically a recap (oh how I hate those).

And I'm so mixed on queerbaiting these days. On one hand I love that creators and whoever are actually looking beyond the hetero dudes as the only audience worth catering to (be it fanservice or relationships whatever), and that they're willing to exploit it. But then on the other, hardly anyone goes all the way with it and canonizes it. It gets very frustrating when the only message I'm getting is that queer characters are only interesting in theory, and only for the sake of laughs.

I don't mind the those T&B guys relationship going anywhere from ultra platonic to romantic to unconditional tbh, but fuck yeah I feel you >:

Totally with you. In some instances, the subtext-teasing-without-text doesn't bother me, but sometimes it really really bothers me, and Tiger & Bunny was one of those times. I was so irate at how completely gay they were without actually being gay. It just made me angry at the show. I don't know if I'll watch the movies or not.

yeah queerbaiting gets OLD really damn fast, especially when the characters are clearly a really, really good match who 99% of the time would have been together romantically/sexually if they were opposite genders.

What if they're not baiting or teasing and they really are just good friends according to the writers? Not saying they shouldn't have gay characters but I don't think as many creators are "intentionally baiting" as slash fans think they are.

Although seriously I'm intentionally baiting hardcore in my original work and people aren't catching it. Damned if you do. Damned if you don't.

I really like that T&B doesn't really have any romance because the show just works well that way but if it ever gets a continuation and there's some big heterosexual love story that involves K or B, after we've been told it's up for interpretation whether they're just friends, I won't be able to help being pretty pissed.

Specific canons aside, we totally need more non-stereotyped canon same-sex relationships. We needed them yesterday.

YES PLEASE. Not my fandom but i'm so sick of m/m or f/f 'ships being either 'Very Special Episodes' or completely omitted.

White Collar is the only show that immediately springs to mind that has a f/f 'ship that's 'just another couple', and it's awesome.

while I'd be over the moon if they came out and made it canon for a number of reasons that go beyond fujoshi fangirling, this is actually one of those series that DOESN'T rub me the wrong way with the subtext. Like, I get that the show is pretty heavy with it and the creators have hit us over the head with it and made references to ~the power of their love for each other~ repeatedly but IDK the vibe doesn't feel as malicious or as much of a marketing ploy as I've gotten from a lot of other series. It's just this nice little multidimentsional but understated relationship. And yeah, while it's not nearly the same thing as making it official, the fact that they're not screaming NO HOMO in reponse is also kinda nice for a change...

As much as I love this pairing, I don't think I'd have loved it as much if it had become canon within the time frame of the show. Both Barnaby and Kotetsu are rather busy dealing with a great number of personal problems that would over-shadow a love story and honestly the idea of Barnaby being in a relationship while his memories are so damn shaky and he can't trust any of them by the end of the series would really skeeves me out. After the final time-skip, I could buy it but we had, like, four minutes tops of that. So I'm okay with them not being a pairing in the show because I thought it worked better for the story they were telling. It didn't feel like a tease to me.

oh god I don't even know what this show is but I agree with your second paragraph SO HARD. It seems like that stuff DOES work for generating a huge fandom - see BBC Sherlock - but it does nothing for me and makes me sad, especially for my tiny fandoms with canon slash pairings in them. It's like watching people fall for something cheap and superficial and which ultimately doesn't respect us at all, either as queer people OR as slash fans. :/
