Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally clicked the wrong thing and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (a bit over 100) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here and it will still go up this week.

The submissions post for next week is linked below as usual.

Come to think of it, I actually tend to do this a lot, depending on the setting of the series...and I'm a Christian.

I think that's because when you grow up in Evangelical culture it's generally assumed that mainstream media is full of GODLESS HEATHENS!! though |D;;; (Note: I'm exaggerating somewhat.)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I really just ignore the whole thing completely, but when I think about it hard, I do this, too. Especially when it comes to children media.

Agreed! Pic is pretty. Right-clicked and saved (with your text)!

. . .I do this too. I don't usually assume that they're atheist per se, but I automatically assume they're not very religious and they probably at least don't actively practice any religion. I don't know why.

I do the same. Come to think of it, I tend to do it IRL too. :/

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, but I think that's mostly because of the environment I grew up in; it's a pretty safe assumption for me to make IRL as well.

I do this, just because I didn't grow up in a religious area and it's not something I think about..?

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2012-09-01 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, unless it's shown where someone is praying, sitting in a church pew or those confession booths, wearing jewelery with religious overtones (eg: the obvious cross necklace, religious symbols in their house, or whatever, I also go right ahead and assume they're atheist or completely non-pious. So long as the character doesn't even briefly touch on beliefs I guess.

I didn't think this was an odd thing to assume though...
saku: (Default)

[personal profile] saku 2012-09-01 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
i think that's normal, because religion is usually a big part of a religious person's life so it would likely come up at least once in the story, imo. i default everyone to agnostic to be more neutral about it though.
angrymermaids: (jesus)

[personal profile] angrymermaids 2012-09-01 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, I kind of do this too, and I'm religious.

I guess it's because if religion is a non-issue in the story, I don't thrust any particular faith (or professed atheism) on the characters. It's just... not an issue, so I don't think about what religion they might be, or might not be.

When I write, my characters almost always have religious beliefs of some sort. How practicing they are depends on my levels of religious angst when I come up with the characters. :P Whenever I write a Mormon character, after a while the story stops being about vampires (or whatever) and turns into a story about me ironing out my religious issues. This has happened multiple times.

The only time I did this was with Rita Mordio, I thought she was really unpleasant and annoying until I realized that If she were in our world she'd be a grumpy atheist that insults Jehovah's witnesses on sunday mornings. It sorta endeared her to me.

Other than that I never did this, but I kinda want to now.

Love that art by the way.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I do this... and it's because I see atheism as basically the default position. Babies are born not believing in higher powers. Religion is something they come to over time, by being taught it or seeking it on their own for whatever reason. Nothing is born religious.

Agnostic is not a proper term for belief/lack of belief. It's unrelated to the "belief spectrum", so to speak. Agnostic is not some form of "light atheism" or anything, and it's not on the fence.

This page describes the difference really well: http://wiki.ironchariots.org/index.php?title=Atheist_vs._Agnostic

"Gnosticism (in the general sense being discussed here) addresses the issue of what one knows or claims to know. For any claim regarding the existence of a god, a gnostic is an individual who claims knowledge that the assertion is true and an agnostic (literally, "one who lacks knowledge") is someone who makes no such claim."

I definitely do this ( I am an atheist myself, which may account for some of it) but also because I just am more comfortable with thinking they don't, and if they are religious, I only think about it when it's specifically brought up.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
hmm, i assume more agnosticism than atheism

i think of agnosticism as the default position

i dont think too many little kids are firm atheists

i think most people, deep down, at least wonder about something if not believe in it

but i wouldnt assume a character was part of an organized religion unless they mentioned it, or prayed or something

I never thought about it much, but I think I do this, too. I'm agnostic myself, and even though I was religious as a kid, I think I sometimes underestimate how religious a lot of people are in the U.S. (it surprises me to hear people talk about faith IRL, too). With fictional characters, for some reason it's often hard for me to see them as believers, unless it's an important part of their character arc. I don't have a problem with them being believers, but it's just odd to think about.

What's weird is that I don't assume this about characters but I kinda do assume it about most people I meet.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-02 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Unless stated otherwise, I assume most fictional characters are raised in some denomination of Christianity, but it doesn't play a big part in their lives. It's kind of like something they don't really think about...the type of Christian that goes to church on the important holy days only and has a general belief in God but haven't exactly ironed out the specifics, or don't care enough to. I grew up in a town where this kind of practice is common, so I usually assume that's how most people are.

I don't know if you're an atheist or agnostic irl, but if you are then that could be the reason why. Generally it's easier for people to relate to characters with the same beliefs.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-02 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Another one for "does this too"! When I first saw a show actually have all of its main cast say what (non-)religion each of them were (Community, where 5 characters are religious, 1 is atheistic, and 1 is agnostic -- which everyone else boos), it surprised me a lot.

Well even though I'm a Christian I dislike reading religion in most stories so I usually think the same, or I just don't think about what they believe at all if it never plays a part in the story.

Fascinating!
Unconsciously, at least, I will tend to assume characters are agnostic or just "don't care", unless otherwise shown.
This might be because I come from a country where religion isn't a big deal - we tend to keep it pretty casual, and it's seen as rude to wave it around.

I do this, too, mostly because the thought of my favorite characters 'having religion' or being in any way religious is depressing.
