Write it, anon. You can't make the piece do the prompt justice if you don't have it to work with in the first place.

IGNORE THOSE VOICES. KEEP PUTTING TEXT TO PAPER. EVEN IF IT'S SHIT TEXT.

You can go back and correct the shit text later. THat's always easier then staring at nothing for a half hour and losing your nerve.

Keep doing it.

KEEP DOING IT.

I totally understand OP, I'm in a very similar position save the second paragraph - in my case the canon material is completed. I've never posted fanfiction so I'm kinda scared.

Just do it! I'm going to. One day. Haha.

Write it! Even if you can't write it by the end of September. Having a great idea is an excellent start.

Just write it. The more you think about it, the more you are going to keep putting it off and putting it off until it's just this wisp of a thing stuck in the back of your mind. Best get it out now.

You can always revise what doesn't work the first time around.

Do it!

Seriously, I was almost exactly you a few years ago. I even thought about asking specific authors to please "write this fic." But then I did it myself. I was... okay. But a lot of others liked it and I made some fantastic fandom friends because of it.

You may not be able to do it justice, the way it is in your head. But you will probably do it well enough to justify the time spent on it. Don't give yourself deadlines or make it in any way not fun. Just do it to have it out of your head and to share it with others. It will probably even be fun!

Man, I know that feel, though mine's original fiction. >_>;

Good luck, whatever you decide to do! <3

Write it. Get it out of your system. You might surprise yourself.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
*adds voice to chorus of "Write it"*

I've been percolating a fanfic idea for 5 years. Though I've written and posted about 200 works in various other fandoms, I've been holding off on this one because a) no one's ever done it before and b) it goes pretty strongly against fanon. (Not canon, though.) ~ I've held back partly because I'm afraid people in the fandom will flame me, but mostly because I'm afraid I can't do my idea justice either.

But you know, OP - neither of us is going to know what we can do until we slap that clay down on the potting wheel and start a-spinning.

LET'S JUST DO IT!

Even if your deepest darkest fears are correct no one but you has to know, you're at least one step closer to your goal, and it's the best kind of learning experience. It's easier to figure out where you're going wrong when you have data and not just projections at hand.

And I can tell you from experience 15-30k seems is always the most intimidating just before you start getting the first words out.

Maybe just doing a rough draft will help you gain footing and minimize your intimidation of the workload?

Doctor Who?

Like everyone else said, write it already. You're pretty much writing it solely for yourself, so you'll know exactly how to write what you want to see. You'll do fine.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-19 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely write it. When you're that passionate about something, you'll do it justice.

Start writing anon. When you get that kind of idea that just eats your brain, you have to write it until it gets out. You can always go back and edit it later to make it better, but get it out. 15-30 k is a lot more doable than you think. Just keep at it, a chunk at a time. Let yourself fall into the writing groove and let that inspiration carry you on.

Chances are the way you write it will be far closer to what you need than what anyone else would have done. It's like scratching an itch. You know just the spot.

Adding my voice to the chorus of "write it"s. I learned a long time ago not to argue with the Muse, and I've found that if I just write the damned thing it gets it out of my system. You can decide once you've got the first draft down if it's utter crap or salvageable, but remember (and this is something I have to remind myself of every day) that "crap" can be edited into "not crap." You can't edit a blank page.

And nothing says you have to post it anywhere once you're done.

You know how people are always harping on "write for yourself, not for others"? THIS IS WHY. Don't worry about how fandom will receive it, or think that you're not good enough to write it because you've never done anything like it. Forget about the word count, forget about the deadline - just sit down and write. Or type.

I've written stories for fandoms that didn't exist before, solely because it was the story I was searching for, and the one I wanted to read. I've been where you are! And as someone who tends to crack under pressure, let me just say that if I can do it, you can do it :P

You can always tell the passion projects from a mile away, because the other's love for the story will spill over in such a way that you can't help but be swept up in it.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-19 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shitballs, BREVITY. If your secret is several paragraphs of text and at any point you have to say "So my secret?", you are making a terrible one and should start over.

Write it. Write it write it write it.

And honestly, if you're okay with waiting for a bit, crank it out during NaNoWriMo. Having that support structure and that regularity that NaNo provides really helps with getting things on the page, at least in my experience.

Start small and work up.

If you don't think you can do it, is there a fandom friend who might be up for taking the challenge as a 'gift'? I've written stories for friends before. Just a thought.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-19 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Just fucking write it? I don't get the angst over it.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-19 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna tell you what I tell myself everyday I fail to write the countless ideas I can't get out of my head, the pairings I love that no one else pays much mind, the scenarios I obsess over that no one else has tackled: WRITE IT JUST WRITE IT WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU NO ONE CARES HOW BAD IT IS JESUS FUCK WRITE IT YOU FOOL OR YOU WILL NEVER SLEEP AGAIN OH MY GOD WRITE IT.

I dunno if it'll be any more useful to you than it is to me, but it's worth a shot.

In all honesty OPanon your first draft will likely suck but that's fine it's what first drafts are for. You get your idea down and then start making it better.

Don't get hung up on trying to make it perfect just start writing.
