(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 12:17 am (UTC)(link)Almost every one of them has some sort of tumblr/twitter/blogger where they talk about health issues, relationship drama, their opinion on controversial subjects, etc.
What I'm trying to say is, they seem to like the often creepy closeness to their fans. If not they wouldn't encourage it like this.
I'm not trying to defend any stalkerish fans, btw! This shit is not okay at all. No matter how much info a person puts on the web, you should still respect their privacy and personal space.
It's just 'meh' now.
(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 12:45 am (UTC)(link)It's just not what it use to be, in my eyes, it's just gotten so stale and repetitive.
I've gone back to looking for laughs, on YouTube.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)To be fair, I still like Bad Movie Beatdown, but I only found it because I got bored with the ones that I had been following. I think they became too OTT with cameos and making episodes more about their personal inside jokes.
But I actually hope the new show they're planning actually puts the focus of the rest of their (remaining) vlogs back on whatever the topic initially was. Because I actually don't mind occasional brief cameos, and I occasionally like it when two vloggers review something. But when an entire NChick episode is mostly about Nella and that other girl NChick's friends with, I lose interest.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 03:20 am (UTC)(link)... yeah, I think it fucking rocks. But if it makes you uncomfortable, that's ok.
I really wish the reviewers would start acting a little more professional, though. Like getting separate twitters, one for personal stuff and one for fan interaction.

And frankly, there was a lot of other shit I found out from lurking their Twitters that I could have lived without. Lord knows I had to quit a lot of shows because what I thought was a self-aware skewering of a type turned out to be the actual type of person the reviewer was.
TL;DR: The line between fiction and reality with TGWTG folk has not so much been blurred as blown up with a stack of dynamite, and I'd rather not encourage them when they've become increasingly unfunny and desperate anyway.
no subject
That's kind of more your problem than theirs. You decided, arbitrarily, what constituted fiction and reality and where there should be a line drawn. They didn't. The only line that was ever THERE was the one you drew.
It's fair of you not to want to know about the personal lives of people you go to just for entertainment, but it's not really fair of you to make it sound like they're collectively some almost-maliciously botched PR job just because you don't like who they are as people.
no subject
I feel the same. I used to follow some of the reviewers on twitter years ago, including Spoony, but then I unfollowed him and most of the others and this is partially the reason why.
I also agree with your point. The way I see it, ever since they started reviewing stuff, most of them were "playing a character", which meant they were acting differently when reviewing than if they were reviewing the movie as themselves. Nostalgia Critic is the most popular example of this, then there's Cinema Snob, Nostalgia Chick (who, even though she has reviewed some movies as being bad, has admitted that she as a person liked those movies), etc. It seems to me that, yes, their personal opinion on what they review might be that it's bad, but when actually reviewing they are playing a character who sometimes overreacts, etc. to get some laughs out of the audience. Why would they give themselves an alias, such as Nostalgia Critic, Nostalgia Chick, Cinema Snob, etc. if they weren't playing a character? They could use their real names (which we, as fans, already know) when reviewing stuff, but they don't - because they're playing characters, as they themselves have sometimes admitted.
That's why I don't think Doug acts like the Nostalgia Critic when he talks about movies with other people (with all the shouting, etc.), or why I don't think Brad is a snobbish person like the Cinema Snob is - and that applies to every reviewer. True, some of them might not actually be playing a character and might just have an internet alias because everyone has an internet alias, but generally that's how I view the reviewers - and to a certain point that's what the reviewers themselves want me to see them, otherwise they wouldn't be going on and on about how they're playing a character and stuff.
The problem for me is when I know too much about the reviewer as a person and it influences how I see them in their reviews, even if they're playing a character. For example, I've never followed Lupa, but knowing what happened between her and Spoony made the anniversaries a bit awkward to watch for me. Same thing with Spoony - knowing what he's going through makes his reviews a bit weird to watch, for me at least. If I didn't know so much about these people's personal lives, I wouldn't feel weird or awkward watching their videos. I think that's one of the reasons why people stop watching TGWTG or can't be part of the fandom anymore, like OP put it.

That being said...I'm really worried about Roses. I know she had a medical issue but...I think it's weird no one has said anything about her at all, not even a "get better soon!" (at least, not that I know of).

She did recently post a blog about her current status, which you can read here:

It's not that we don't support her or wish her well. It's that we CAN'T actively take part in helping her right now, so naturally there hasn't been much Twitter/Tumblr/Whatever-buzz to/about her.

I've never really been in the fandom, though. I mean, in the since that I've interacted with other fans and stuff. RPF squicks me out so I couldn't read fanfic about that sort of thing, and I kinda feel like the forums for TGWTG and Spoony's site are both too...drama-y...

What is "the way they should"? And why should they, anyway? For a lot of producers, there's not really a difference. Being a producer is a significant part of their "real life." Why shouldn't they share that, or any other part of their lives, with whomever they like, however they like? They're not high-ranking politicians or highly-paid "real" celebrities. They're people on the internet who do stuff on the internet that other people like. Being able to press a "record" button on a video camera doesn't make anyone a magical fairy uber-being of ascended untouchable godliness any more than having a driver's license gives you superpowers. It makes them just another person... with a video camera.
(By the way, hi, I'm Ven, I make title cards for Brows Held High on TGWTG and for about a year now have also been involved in the production of Brows Held High in varying degrees as co-writer, props manager, costuming, camera direction, and... moral support by watching the shit Kyle reviews with him. I've contributed to other shows, too, doing everything from editing scripts to providing cameos. Should I stop interacting with the rest of the internet too?)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 06:21 am (UTC)(link)1. Look at your list of people you follow Tumblr/Twitter/ect
2. Ask yourself questions like "Who's personal life do I not want to hear about?" "Who tends to post about drama that I don't like?" "Who do I not enjoy following?"
3. Unfollow those people
4. Continue using the internet in ways that make you happy and minimizes the stress caused by what other people choose to do.
What WILL NOT happen: people yelling at you for unfollowing someone, the person you unfollowed getting upset or siccing their fans on you, the end of the world
What WILL happen: Your feed will have less posts that you don't want to see, people who enjoy following them will continue to do so, the world will continue as if nothing important happened
Side effects may include less time spent complaining about what other people post/tweet, a lessened urge to make fandom secrets on the subject
This cure is not FDA approved however it has been tested by this anon who reports increased enjoyment of Twitter, Tumblr, and fandom in general.
