3. While I like the books, the only bit I really disagree with you on is the last one. She does stuff in conjunction with other people, sure, but that's because people tend to do things with other people, because she's dealing with things she can't do all by herself, and because she's thirteen. Why is that a bad thing?

5: You suck. You so posted that just to be wanky. I can like Naruto and random obscure/arty/unpopular shit like Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, WHR, Gilgamesh and The Twelve Kingdoms too, y'know. There's just little point making a fuss about it, cos no bastard bothers to do much fanart/fiction of it, and therefore it never really gets ranted/posted/whatever'd about.

Okay, while I hate Naruto with the power of a thousand suns (wait, maybe that's my hatred of the Naruto fan who keeps nagging me at work) it's not really fair to get all elitist on folks who watch what's on tv. Going to the video store isn't really a solution unless you live near one with a decent selection. The closest place to me when I was a teen had a bunch of Ranma 1/2, Vampire Hunter D, the old Ghost in the Shell and Akira. Being closed to new stuff is different from not having access.

(Of course, there's always the public library, many of which now have anime collections or can order them from other locations /plug-for-library-use)

People who watched Beast Wars or the newer series when they were little and loved them, and who just never felt like getting into G1? People who have no way to watch G1? 5. I could understand this being a problem if they never thought about looking into other kinds of anime. But as I see it most of the time people watch things on Adult Swim and then go "hey I wonder what else is out there" and thus the cycle starts and they try to find other series. It should be your job as a fan of "underground" anime to enlighten others. Show them other series. Thats what fandom should be all about. And not be elitist about it, yo.

Nope, you're not alone. I've just started reading it for the first time after several people told me I had to read it. I'm about halfway through Golden Compass and I hate Lyra with a passion. She's annoying, whiny, and too lucky for her own good. I don't know what happens later on in the books but for right now I wish the protaganist was anyone other than her.

5. Things generally become mainstream because they're good. Crying emo tears of pain about how Haruhi/some other otaku fodder isn't as popular as mainstream show #12 isn't going to do anything for you.
