Lines you wish you could erase from canon

It's not as big as a storyarc, or an entire episode or movie, or a scene, but you know that in ficion there's sometimes some really bad lines of dialogue that just kind of put a dent in a scene or distract you with their badness, and you wish you could just get rid of.

There isn't only one instance of it, exactly, but one line of dialogue that always pisses me off in Supernatural - Son of a bitch.

I just wish it could be removed entirely from Dean's vocabulary. It's an annoying insult as it is (even without the offensiveness), but it's overused way too much. Every time he uses it I just want to punch him in the face. Ruins the atmosphere of almost every scene it's used in, IMHO.

I agree. It's such an...awkward insult. There are times when he uses it when it would make much more sense to say "damn it" or something.

There are times I wish SPN was on HBO so Sam and Dean could actually drop the f-bomb.

Many people have a favorite curse, even if it doesn't make sense in every situation. It would be worse if he used a different word or phrase every time. Like what the hell, Dean, did you swallow a profanity dictionary?

I don't have any. Oddly enough, I either accept the entire canon with all its questionable lines or do not accept it at all.

It's not even about "forgiving" things, it's that I start to feel about the bad parts like I feel about the flaws of some generally good person. Sometimes they only make this person sweeter; even if they don't, without them a human being would turn into a freaking spiritual goody. Not exactly a kind of thing one wants to happen to their friends.

OMG you just described exactly what my feelings towards Doctor Who are way better than all my previous attempts. It's not that I like the badness or think it's good, it's that I like the fact that the badness is there and IS bad and yet the show has plenty of untainted goodness left over.

in the first pokemon mystery dungeon, they used a lot a phrase that went like "the unthinkable would happen! D:" (instead of something like "the end of the world", or something)

it was so... ridiculously censorship-like? it took the seriousness out of the situation and made it ridiculous instead

also, a lot of the "tension-breaking" humorous lines in Danny Phantom, like in the Ultimate Enemy, where Sam calls Danny's older self a "jerk". um, dude, the guy was killing (off-screen, granted, but it was seriously implied) and destroying everything, "jerk" is what you would call a school bully like Dash, not a sociopathic mass murderer o_O

anyway, that series had a lot of really awkward dialogue

DANNY PHANTOM

Great relationships, interesting themes, great characters, great ideas, pretty decent animation, really fun show.

TERRIBLE FUCKING DIALOGUE.

SERIOUSLY AWFUL.

But I love it anyway <3

Also all of Tuckers outdated technology references make me laugh really hard. I love his ~high tech~ PDA, so high tech that it needs cartridges to have a GPS in it.

Oh God... the scene where Dark!Danny reveals himself to Danny's parents, and gives his speech about how they never noticed Danny was half-ghost (that makes sense in context)... and Jack turns to Maddie and says, "For the record, I blame you".

Really? Fucking REALLY?

James Bond

While there's a lot of lines I wish would just sort of disappear forever in James Bond books, there's one that made my blood boil.

Namely, that when James would bed Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale, his line of thought went along the lines that because she was a naturally reserved woman that any lovemaking would have "the sweet tang of rape to it".

Just what the fuck, no. No.

I know James Bond isn't the role model for healthy sexual relationships, but there's no reason for me to believe that a billion young men weren't reading that at the time and having it feed into the already repressive misogyny.

Say again, what the fuck James Bond.

I don't even really like iCarly, but I remember watching it with my little brother one time, and the following exchange occurred:

Spencer: Where were you?

Carly: I were upstairs.

*laughing track plays*

I was so full of rage that I had to leave the room, and I swore never to watch that show again. It was already pretty shitty to begin with, but if I could remove any line, it would be that one.

Seriously, it was so awkward and the scene and her thoughts were perfectly clear and effective without it.

The love words said between Otacon and Naomi in MGS4. Now, this isn't character bashing - I love Naomi. But I like her better as a manipulative person who is doing what she must to right a wrong, even if it's awful; and Otacon's love for her was deeply unsettling for me, because I couldn't help but read it as dubcon as it was what he felt for his stepmother.

Seriously, the story would have been so much better if they had shown it ultimately as a fucked up relationship instead of their dramatic parting words via laptop.

Doctor Who, the episode Let's Kill Hitler: "Well, she's been brainwashed. Plus, she's a woman!"

The "mewling quim" bit from the Avengers. It didn't bother me personally, but hot damn did it cause a lot of wank and make Avengers fandom unpleasant for a while. :/

In the 1996 'Emma', Mr Elton writes that he's going to Bath to 'relax and meet new people.' I can't imagine an early 19th century country vicar using the concept of relaxing, let alone the word.

The Christmas Invasion from Doctor Who. There a part after the Sycorax battle where the alien tries to back stab him and the Doctor throw a fruit at a button, part of the spaceship falls off with the alien, and the Doctor says "No second chances. I'm that sort of a man."

I mean, I get what RTD was going for, but the editing and pace of the whole thing combined with the INSTANT SCENE CHANGE right after it always made those 10 seconds of the episode just feel really off and more like a first draft than a final edit.

Every instance of random, drive-by transphobia in How I Met Your Mother.

The "jokes" are pretty unnecessary, and the scenes would be just as funny without them :/ (Probably even more so, because it wouldn't leave me with wanting to slam the writers' heads in a closing door.)

Explanatory lines. All of them. The one I bitch about most is Molly Weasley plugging Diagon Alley in the Chamber of Secrets movie, as if it were something that her family had never heard of - which of course they have - because they couldn't come up with a better way to introduce it to the viewers.

In the Supernatural episode Frontierland, Dean says something like, "I'm a pussy-magnet," and Idk why, it honestly bothered me A LOT. And I already hated that season, so if that line could be erased, it probably wouldn't hurt.
