I think the reason you're probably drawn to the trope in this case is that it's TOTALLY AWESOME AND THE BEST SHOW BECAUSE OF THAT!!!

I don't get why you think it's an either/or situation? The series is full of sex and nude scenes, so this isn't really explicit by Spartacus standards.

No but seriously I just finished reading a book on the (factual not the made-up crazycakes version) origins of the Mormon religious movement, and at the time ACD was writing STUD the Brits were obsessed by Smith and his NRM. So we look at STUD today and think "And suddenly, Mormons! ...wait, whut?" but ACD actually was current for his time when writing about it because everyone was fascinated with it, mostly in a this-is-a-train-wreck-but-it's-a-NEW-train-wreck-we-have-never-seen-before way.

bring an opaque thermos to class and fill it with gin. whenever he speaks, take a small drink. the more he talks, the less you will care.

if that's not your thing, the only other thing i could think of in terms of interaction is being overly nice to him. if he wants hostile attention, he might not even know how to respond to a person being extremely polite and sweet.

You mentioned the tangent questions, and you're absolutely right. He's kind of infamous for those, to the point where I watched a professor's eyes pop and he rocked back in his seat when my classmate was getting riled up and nasty about something OT.

Yeah, no, not excited at all. I'll talk to my groupmates about it, and if they think that having the professor take this guy aside and talk to him or relocate him would help, then I'll approach the prof.

I'm still kind of wary about approaching professors, but I'll ask my groupmates and see if they're in with the idea too. If they think it will help, I'll try to say something to the prof.

Pretty much agreed with you on Supernatural. I have not and will not see most of season seven, but I do enjoy this season.

If he's affecting your and others' ability to preform well in class then it becomes an academic issue and it's well within your right to tell your concern to the professor. Tell them this guy is making the working environment hostile and ineffective. Though I suggest getting at least part of the rest of the group to back you up about with the professor.

This secret says Derpy is out as of S4, which hasn't happened yet. She definitely appears less in season 3, but we have no way of confirming or denying that part yet, so nothing has been proven false. Episodes are not always produced in order and it's probably if she is being sent off that she'd appear one last time in the finale due to the fact the staff liked her too.

If Derpy shows up in S4 premiere, then it will be suspect. Until then, I believe it true which means that what it says is true: Hasbro wanted Alicorn Twilight. Not others. Lauren certainly has not directly mentioned any plans of her own for Twilight to have become an Alicorn, and I think shed have mentioned it by now. I bought the brony doc and will retract this statement if it turns out she elaborated more on the "successor" thing, but for now I think what we see her is what is fact.

He's still hostile and combative toward people who are naturally sweet and nice. One of my friends in this program is the sweetest, most harmless girl you'd ever meet. This dude still is nasty and mean to her, when he was in her group last semester.

Yeah, I hear you. I think it's clever, but in a pretty superficial way, if that makes any sense. It's pretty, the dialogue is snappy, but it's not deep and the mysteries aren't very well done. Moriarty in particular is just ridiculous and embarrassing.

anyway, if you're being honest here, than, yeah, you are the exception in the other extreme

for most people, feeling that initial spark of attraction is a completely different process from any conscious thought

people can think "oh hey, that person is hot" without giving a shit about their personality, just their looks, apparent attitude, style, whatever

the whole "hmm is this person worth my time/should I let them know I'm interest/should I curb this or let it grow" is conscious and comes later, and THAT is the thing that people do have control over

this actually bums me out. everyone deserves a buddy they can hang out with. if you don't mind me asking, have you ever gone to any clubs or organizations around your community to meet some folks? i have no idea what your situation is but even volunteer work can lead you to meeting some new people you might click with.

But you're right, his behavior is definitely affecting us on an academic level; we spent an hour trying to agree on the phrasing of a single hypothesis. We would have been done in 10 minutes if he hadn't been there.

I'll definitely approach my group about talking to the prof. Last semester, this guy worked alone from my group, because he also couldn't agree on our research focus. If it wasn't his way, then it was totally incorrect, and he wouldn't (and isn't) amenable to compromises.

And he outright tells people that their desire to study something is worthless or stupid.
