*not the OP, but jumps in for a high five, because Frankenhole fans are so rare*

I never really thought about it as a fandom-y type canon, but now that I have, I want it. The fic could be ANYTHING.

Yas. A hundred times yes. I would join his class in an instant.

I'd say more like Walmart on Halloween night. Christmas Eve is packed, it's craycray

Go to the prof as a group. This idiot is the one acting like the child, IMO.

DA

I don't get the Emma/Hook shipping either. I mean, sure, they "bicker" and he's a good-looking guy, but the characters don't have chemistry.

Darcy/Loki.

I actually don't really like him, yet the ship appealed to me? I certainly don't care for his fanbase, and while I love Darcy, I got tired of what a self-insert she was becoming in fanworks.

I did, however, discover an interest in Sif/Thor.

You seriously need to bring this up with the professor. An email might actually be better than doing it in person.

Why? If you send an email, the communication is documented. The professor isn't necessarily going to handle this well; being in a position of power doesn't mean you use that power wisely. So if this jerk ends up messing up your project you have communication, in writing, that you'd tried to discuss this.

You should still talk to the prof in person, but make sure there's an email about your concerns.

Totally didn't mean to post that. I was going to say that I'm not a huuuuuuge sci f reader myself, but if you're looking for some shorter, satisfying reads this is what I'd go for:
- Asimov (as I said above) and Philip K Dick
- Ursula Le Guin - I read 'City of Illusions' most recently, but she has a big range so have look at the summaries to see if something interests you.
- Ender's Game - It is part of a series, but the first one can be read as stand alone.
- The Hitch Hiker's Guide and Red Dwarf series - I know, I know, they're both series. And also humour primarily. But they're also super great and easy reads as well, so you should definitely check out the first books in each and give them a go if you haven't already.
- Slaughter-house Five? Does that count? It has time travel... (God, my dad would be ashamed at how little sci fi I do read). But you could also go for some classic literature that is also sci fi, like 1984, Brave New World, A Handmaid's Tale, Flowers for Algernon, Fahrenheit 451
- Also seconding recs for Gibbons and Stephenson. I've heard good and bad things about Heinlein. Crichton seems like a lot of fun, if that's more what you're looking for
- I personally read Tanith Lee's 'Silver Metal Lover' for the lols and the lols only, so while I can't comment on the rest of her work I can say that it is as fine a YA book about the love story between a spoilt teenage girl and a robot prostitute as you'll ever come across

Thanks guys, I knew I could count on F!S :D

Re: Can someone please explain to me

(Anonymous) 2013-03-01 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well yeah, subtlety is a big part of it. There's a major difference between a scene that's meant to evoke a specific reaction and one that just hammers it home with a two by four upside the head. I mean look:

"I have terrible news," said Mulder, hanging his head in sorrow. "Really bad. I've... I've got CANCER."

"Oh no!" exclaimed Scully. "Not cancer! Not after Skinner's been permanently crippled in a completely unexpected tractor accident after finding out he had a winning lottery ticket!"

"Yes. Cancer. But that's not all." Mulder took a deep breath, running his long fingers through his magnificent locks. "Your dog just died, Scully. I didn't want to tell you, but he ate one of my porno tapes and choked on the plastic."

Scully tried not to imagine how Queeqeg's last moments must've been, his furry little legs twitching frantically as he gasped for air. Her eyes filled with unshed tears, and a dull ache throbbed in the pit of her stomach.

Etc. etc. Writing that's really obvious about trying to wring an emotional response from the reader is bad writing. If it's good, then you're probably not going to notice that hey, someone's trying to make me cry! You'll just cry.

China Mountain Zhang by Maureen McHugh

I just finished it yesterday and it was really fucking good. Hard to find though- I'd been looking for a copy for almost a year. I think all of my other favourites under 350 pages have already been mentioned.

> And he outright tells people that their desire to study something is worthless or stupid.

He's toxic. His behaviour needs to be nipped in the bud. Go as high up in the chain of command as necessary to get him to stop.

Penn & Teller. I don't normally do RPF and neither of them are my type, but I don't know... I watched some of their earlier TV stuff on youtube where they had this great antagonistic partnership and they're just so damn CUTE.

I blame the secrets on this comm for starting it, too.

Maybe it was special effects.

Re: Hostile classmate- help?

Also? Document everything! Write down the times and dates of every incident and as objectively as you can the details of what happened, specifically how it impacted the ability to do your work. Don't put in long rants, just a timestamp, what was said or done, what he said or did, and the negative impact it had.

The prof might shrug it off, even if you go as a group. If you go to him as a group, with documentation (leave copies with the prof, NOT the originals), it will be harder for him to brush it off.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-01 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
You should really try watching it. It has a good amount of vulgar and dark humor, but if you can get over that, you can find alot of the episodes online.

SO PSYCHED. It's made my whole damn year, seriously.

Rumbelle.
Johnlock.

In the former's case, the characters started to annoy me - especially Belle - and in the latter, I stopped liking the show, but I still ship Holmes/Watson. If that makes any sense(?)

Weird how people comment about it being like 4chan because I reside on a heavily-tripfagged board. Even on 4chan there are known people.

'Dating but not realising it', 'pretending to be dating', 'High-school-after-work-job-at-a-bakery-AU' and 'the two characters have a ridiculous misunderstanding that could easily be cleared up if they had a 5 minute conversation but instead character B decides character A hates them and runs away from home and for some reason becomes homeless even though they are perfectly capable of living by themselves and character A finds them again years later and rehabilitates them into society and maybe apologises for something they didn't even do in the first place' - ALL IN THE SAME FIC PLEASE. (I'm sorry. But not really, because these are all legitimate fic tropes I love)

Germany/Italy in Hetalia.
I dunno, I sort-of moved away to other pairings and now generally don't care for these two.

I had no idea about his new album, and now I have been listening to the new song and got all excited. It sounds awesome!

so far I can't find it on ff.net :( sorry

I've been trying to pin down what it is I don't like about these type of shows, and you just summed it up perfectly!

Well, you're stuck with the same "But what if no one's good at it?" problem and... well, you're right.

But, see, ignoring reasons like, "The author didn't think of it," there has to be a reason why everyone doesn't just tranfigure random junk into valuable objects and sell them for a zillion galleons (or even to Muggle jewelers - surely there are some enterprising Muggleborns out there, even if wizarding-world kids wouldn't think of it).

Basically, we don't see it, therefore it's not happening (and not destabilizing the world economy, etc.), therefore there must be a reason why not because I'm really, really sure that it isn't, "Out of the goodness of their hearts."

So maybe transfigured objects inherently look flawed or fake (uncanny valley)? Maybe the Wizarding economy values things with history, rather than simply [shiny rock]? I like the latter explanation, given the emphasis placed on blood and history and "in my family for generations" and so on.
