Why do two of them look like zombies? Are they supposed to look like zombies?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The one in the first column (middle row) is. The one in the bottom right corner (Susan Sarandon, yo!) is supposed to look like a tribal elder.

and here the race wanks comes

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
As much as I loved this movie, this secret is just asking for wank.

(They finally set a DVD release date~)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Right?

It's okay to like something that's problematic as long as you realize it's problematic. Blaming SJW's for pointing this out just makes you look like a huge stan who's sticking their fingers in their ears and trying to ignore what's wrong with the movie.

The makeup for this movie was awful.

No kidding. How can you make Halle Berry look so phoney as a white person when she looks so much like her mom who is of English and German background?

They should have used her mom as a reference. Same nose. Same cheekbones. Same chin. Almost same everything.

What's his britches, the one from Skyfall and Brideshead, has gotten so very much hotter as he's aged. Like night and day.

Ben Whishaw.

(and I totally agree.)

I really felt that the concept of 'We're all the same and come from the same divine spark of humanity, and race really isn't that much of an anything, except for the preconceptions that we ourselves create' would make the race-warriors happy. But no, they went for griping about makeup. *sigh*

(Anonymous) 2013-03-25 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
That concept causes it's own problems, tho, it sort of promotes the mindset that erases cultural identity. It really is a terrible film no matter how you slice it.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
And if you can't see that there are problematic things with a movie you enjoy and just hoist the blame onto SJWs, I think you're an asshole.

It was a nice idea that simply couldn't be executed on film in this society. And not because of SJW, but because to do so is to ignore the erasure of people of color on film. Should have remained a book, where this kind of erasure can only happen in people's minds.

None of the artistic merit would have been lost by using the actual races and connecting them with a birthmark, but some exposure for actors and actresses of color would have been gained. Ironically, it's exactly the kind of movie people accuse SJW of doing. Talking the talk, but not walking the walk, i.e. arguing aggressively for equality on the internet or on film but not actually trying to change anything in the reality that exists.

I was loling forever at genderbent Wishaw and Asian Weaving and D'Arcy.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly I think the movie would have been better as CGI, with a huge voice cast.

There are limits to what you can do with conventional makeup and studio lights.

Even if it was animation,(which would have been cool as well), then it would have voided this whole SJ storm.

With a movie like that I'm amazed they took the rout they did, it's best to take the safer path.

...and CGI movies are cool.

I think the only interesting thing about this movie was the makeup really, even if it was far from perfect...

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The makeup for the movie was...well, shit. Flat out. Poor Halle Berry. But I appreciated what they were going for anyway, lol'd forever at Asian!Hugo Weaving and Drag Queen!Hugo Weaving (AGENT SMITH THROUGH THE AGES), and quietly ignored the fact that in the original book there was not so much obedience to the Law of Conservation of Details and a far more cyclical approach to the storytelling...

This movie isn't perfect, not by a long shot. I still loved it.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-25 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I gotta be honest. I think using the same actors to portray different races as reincarnations of the same "soul" is... a pretty cool idea. I haven't seen the movie, but that concept really intrigues me. As I understand, the cast has actors from a variety of races, doesn't it? Not just white people? And the theme of the "same people" is pretty huge, so I don't get how this is racist. Having an actor play a character of a different race IS bad, for erasing minorities and being insincere, etc. But this seems like a pretty clear non-racist example and racebends for artistic and thematic reasons?

Not that roles couldn't have been cast again in the different races, but tbh, it's cool to know that it's the "same" person in different roles.

Well, there's a reason it was called "unfilmable" when it was first optioned. :\ People playing different races just doesn't come off well onscreen. I still kinda-sorta-almost wanna see it, though.

I think that it worked out probably as well as it could. I really love the idea of having the same actors play all these characters though and so I'm willing to accept the issues and not let them bother me.

And, as someone else said, at least it wasn't a cast of white people, though the majority were white and British.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-25 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
The film is commenting on both sex fluidity and racial fluidity. One soul can be any gender, any race, and still be the same soul.
It never went too far - note the conspicuous lack of blackface - and what it did do was glorious. I didn't find it problematic at all (and that's as a non-white person), and the makeup didn't bother me as much as it seemed to bother everyone else.
So yeah, anon, I agree.
