Anyone excited for new Doctor Who episodes?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty apathetic atm because I didn't care much for the Christmas special (or the last season and a half, tbh) and I can't help suspect I'll be more of the same and I'll be disappointed if I let myself get excited. However, I'm still gonna watch to see if I'm pleasantly surprised.

IMO, it's a lot less frustrating to watch a show you *don't* have high hopes for as it airs, because you don't get crushed when an episode is bad and you're a lot more impressed when an episode is good. This sounds gloomy but whatever. Thoughts?

I'm less excited as well, but this year I have someone to watch with so that makes me happy.

I feel you on your second sentence, it seems like I'm a pessimist sometimes but it's often better for me to not have high expectations, high expectations just makes my brain go into nitpick mode. When I'm not expecting much it's easier to turn my brain off.

As far as Doctor Who, I think the low expectations is where my brain is. So far series 7 hasn't irritated me as much as series 6 (even if it was unnecessary to have the ponds continue on when they had a perfectly fine exit in series 6) but I think I'm just kind of watching and waiting around to love the show again.

I don't really expect that'll happen until after Moffat leaves though.

I feel pretty much like you. I'm not that thrilled, and I hope that might mean I'll end liking it better becasue I have no expectations.

I'm rather surprisingly apathetic, given the awesome tidbits (More Neil Gaiman! An episode set in the TARDIS! Motorcycle racing!) I've picked up through osmosis. I'm a little perturbed by that. I mean, I quite liked all the non-Moffat episodes of season 7. There's no reason to expect that to stop.

I'm of the opposite opinion as you wrt watching-as-it-airs: shows you don't care for are easier to watch all in one go, because the bad episodes don't stand out as much and the good parts are easier to remember. I would've lost my mind with irritation if I'd watched season 6 as it aired -- instead I blasted through it in a week and so the crushing disappointment didn't have a chance to ever catch up with me or color my view of the episodes, it just manifested as vague dislike after I had finished the whole thing off.

In that vein, I'm thinking of maybe waiting until the rest of the season has finished airing before I watch it myself, but OTOH I don't want to get spoiled for everything. I'll probably watch as it airs but stay the hell away from fandom until after the finale.

A friend I got into DW mentioned yesterday about being excited it was coming back, but I had forgotten all about it. And then I forgot again until I saw this post.

I'm sorry :\ Is that a depressing thing for you, or do you not really care anymore? I tend to always feel a little twinge whenever I hear new stuff about shows I used to like, even if I don't watch them anymore.

Re: Anyone excited for new Doctor Who episodes?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I find it pretty depressing because my interest slipped a lot more than I had realized. And I have such high hopes for Clara, or at least I thought I did. I hope I can get back into enough to at least carry me through until it's a show I love again.

Re: Anyone excited for new Doctor Who episodes?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not just apathetic, I'm cringing. Because I'm very, very, very tempted to be excited about the TOTALLY FRICKIN' EPIC stuff I've glimpsed, but I can just see all the ways it'll get totally fucked up. And I swear to god, if that "Doctor WHO?" gag is used one more time I will throw something in sheer revulsion.

I actually don't know if I should resent Moffat for squandering his stories' massive potential so incompetently, or to thank him for making me like the RTD era so much more in retrospect. And I don't mean "meh, he's good by comparison" -- Moffat's era has made me see, due to their absence/failure, things about the show that I used to take for granted, and appreciate and enjoy them way more now.

I know I sound really bitter and whiny, but believe me: I'm VERY open to being pleasantly surprised ^_^

THIS. Most of my friends are the same way, and we all appreciate character-driven plots in entertainment. But I have one friend who prefers Moffat's era and she likes completely different stuff than the rest of my friends. And none of us get anything out of her terrible Dick and Jane style writing.

Me too. I want a new showrunner and a new doctor already (I really like Matt Smith, but I'm so done with Moffat's story arcs that he's tainted for me).

I've had to tumblr savior Doctor Who because it's got to a point where every time it comes up on my dash it's like a little bit of my DW love crumbles away.

Re: Anyone excited for new Doctor Who episodes?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I sometimes think Matt Smith is one of the few things that puts anything good into the storylines nowadays :\ The plots are just so meaningless and afraid of personality that it seems like the only character depth or nuance to be found comes from his facial expressions and body language. He deserved better, IMO. Eleven is always so much better in Moffat-less standalones.

I'm EXCITED that the show is coming back but I have to admit I'm a bit terrified of the fandom... thing is I've never stopped loving the show. I don't know if it's because I watched everything (starting with the 9th Doctor's run) over the course of a couple months or what but I never felt disappointed like others in fandom do. Okay sure there are issues (and I agree with some of them) but they were never enough to really bother me or make me upset with anyone.

So yeah it's fandom I'm scared of more than anything. I'm probably going to have to avoid most of the communities for the duration so I don't get involved in any conversations. It was different when I was watching and discussing episodes that had already aired before - It felt like the debates were easier to avoid.

Even speaking as someone who doesn't care for the show much nowadays, you're completely right. I'd recommend you watch it in your own bubble and don't let anyone else poison the stuff you enjoy. Remember that the complainers in fandom are only there to vent and find kinship in their venting, they have absolutely no right or authority to try to tell someone they're wrong for liking something just because they have a different opinion.

Meh. I'm over new Who fandom (Classic I still participate a little bit), but I'll watch. I never want to see the weeping angels ever again. I'm a little looking forward to Ice Warriors! What can I say, I like me some Classic baddies. My absolute favorite part of "Closing Time" was that there were freaking cybermats in it.

But I don't want Moffat getting his mitts anywhere the Rani.

Agreed. I feel the same way about The Silence, for that matter. I feel like I'm the only person who can't stand them.

I'm not excited at all, which is honestly depressing because Doctor Who used to be a HUGE DEAL for me when it came back.

I've sat down and made a list of things I expect to happen in the show (predictions about the new companion, how the Doctor's gonna act, plot points in the first episode based on the previews etc.), and I'm basically looking to be proved wrong on the majority of them.

Knowing Moffat, though, I'm honestly not expecting it.

I haven't caught up on it since Amy and Rory left, and the Christmas Special has been sitting around unwatched for months now. I might watch the Gaiman episode?

Man, I think the first half of the season burnt me out despite it not having the rampant, imo, suck that was the last season :(

Re: Anyone excited for new Doctor Who episodes?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
IMO, the three non-Moffat episodes of season seven had more character development, emotional depth, and narrative meaning for the Ponds and the Doctor's relationship with them than the entirety of season six. And they weren't even really good episodes. I don't know how I should feel about that.

(If you care, the Christmas Special doesn't do much to suggest season seven will be anything other than more-of-the-same Moffatness, but quality-wise it's leagues better than the Angels Take Manhattan or Asylum of the Daleks).

I'm actually cautiously optimistic. Generally, when watching an episode, I get right into it, I enjoy it, I LIKE watching it. It's only when I sit down and think it over that I go, "...Huh, actually, that wasn't done so well..."

I don't know, I'm looking forward to it, ESPECIALLY the TARDIS episode, and I want to just... see what the deal with Clara is, but I'm still kind of cautious about it.

I'm excited because Steven Moffat's talking about his time ending. Which means I can probably start watching again.

Honestly, the past two series of Doctor Who have just disappointed me, so I don't even know how much I'll watch. I'm excited for the Neil Gaiman episode because The Doctor's Wife has been my favorite of the Moffat era. And I love Neil.
