Well he did get a little bad touchy with Erica but that changed after she became a werewolf, hahaha.

That and the scene was creepy as fuck. At least to me it was. I couldn't watch it all in one go.

Actually, now I'm kind of curious. How did you, and anyone else who wants to answer me, interpret that scene? (It's completely fine if you didn't think it was creepy. I just want to know.)

Re: op

No, yeah, I thought it was creepy and manipulative as fuck and I watched it through my fingers going, "No Derek stop what are you doing aaahhh."

It really made me uncomfortable. That was the moment when I decided Derek really isn't that good a guy, hahaha.

Re: op

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-03-27 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm kinda glad I'm not alone. I read it like an almost rape scene which seriously freaked me out. It also confused me because Derek has been raped so I was wondering why he would ever act like that. Unless he's so fucked up he doesn't know the difference or something but... fcgvhjbnkfml,;lkjuytrewa

Watch this never be spoken about again on Teen Wolf. No answers.

But yeah, that scene definitely made it hard for to ever look at Derek the same way again.

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Derek seems to have really odd views of sexuality & seems to have no problem using his looks/body to get what he wants, but doesn't like it.

I think Tyler Hoechlin has a grasp on this, but i'm not sure 100% the writers do....Who knows if this storyline will ever be properly addressed.

Re: op

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-03-27 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I noticed that. Which is why I try to rationalize that scene as him being fucked up.

What makes you think the actor's got it? (I mean, I get the writers sometimes don't...)

Oh man that scene was SO CREEPY. And I know that they are just doing it because "Ooh hot Derek needs to make out with SOMEONE, here is an available female." without any real regard for how it would appear coming from someone who is an adult, and a previous victim of statutory rape?

And then the whole "never do that again!" But wait! Let me make out with you first before I shove you off, BUT NEVER DO IT AGAIN!

Re: op

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-03-27 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
That and the blocking was just so... gah! There also seemed to be no regard for just the power dynamics at play with regards to their age, gender, physical health, I could go on.

And then he says, "I have someone else in mind for you." Like, wtf. WTF!

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
ugh yes oh god! I just can't even wrap my head around what they were aiming at? Derek is so fucking creepy.

And then lol at all the fans writing in meta about how Derek has this huge plan, and he's gonna take Stiles as his mate, and Erica needs to get with Boyd and Isaac and Scott and Allison will have a love trio in order to infiltrate Scott into the pack and gain support with the hunters.

First of all, Derek can't plan his way out of a shoebox. Second, that is so incredibly creepy that so many people just seem to be okay with this guy making life decisions for the teenagers he is now in control of.
I feel like April Ludgate,
Can you Photoshop your life with better decisions, Derek?

I thought it was sad for both of them. Mostly for Erica, but also a little for derek too. Derek being the adult should have shut it down faster though.

Plus the whole i have someone else in mind? gross. You can't just dictate who your beta's make out with what a jerk.

But i think the writers more saw it as hey here are two hot people kissing for flimsy reasons....yay, rather than here is two people with serious issues making out and its kinda bad but we'll just ignore that.

Re: op

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-03-27 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Out of the people Derek bit I always felt that though Isaac and Boyd were more ambiguous. Erica's scene made me really lean towards, "THIS IS A BAD DECISION." I thought they were going for ambiguous for all of them but then, yeah, and I can't deal with it.

On top of that it made it seem like the only reason he bit her was because she was female and she could do female things*.

And yeah, I don't think the writers were thinking about it either. Which, I get the show is all about fan service, but like, they get in enough fanservice as it is. It wasn't really necessary to add.

*Like distract people with her boobs? I don't know.

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Right? Erica had just gone through a complete transformation and clearly reveals in being "sexy" and is using it to her advantage wherever she can. Derek has serious issues with how he views relationships.

I just thought they needed 3 betas. There is something mentioned maybe in the books how that makes Derek stronger and how he knew the alpha pack would be coming and was trying to build a strong pack. And then he sucked at it. Honestly I didn't like Erica all at that much at the beginning, but TW can use all the females it can get.

She was also meant to be a love interest for stiles (we could have had it alllll even though she knocked him out with car parts) but they decided there wasn't enough chemistry there so went with her & boyd instead.

I thought it was really skeevy just because we weren't shown anything like that with Isaac and Boyd. Or Jackson for that matter. But I chalked it off as the usual "make it all about the sexs when it comes to women", like the time Lydia just had to wander in the woods without any clothes on.

Re: op

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-03-27 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they really made Erica's about sex which was... weird to me. Sometimes I think they do pretty well with the female characters but hen other times I'm just disappointed and confused.

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
to be fair, i think it was meant to be more "being noticed" while isaac's was about protection and boyd's was about getting some friends.

They never really fleshed out any of the storylines well enough for that to shine through, even isaac who is beating up boys in the locker room one mine, healing puppies the next...

Re: op

Agreed. I don't know what the hell they were thinking, but having some guy creep on a girl in a basement while she's wearing a hospital gown is not sexy, it looks rapey as fuck.

Erica's transformation was generally disappointing, because they spent most of the time concentrating on how she was so hot and sexy now, but that was the only aspect of her life where her new confidence could be seen. As if being able to hit on people was the only thing she was interested in. At least the guys had the "Woo, now we rule at sports!"

like the time Lydia just had to wander in the woods without any clothes on.

Ugh, that bothered me so much. The girl is clearly severely traumatized, and Stiles and Dad (and moreover, the show) treat it like this sexual thing, like, "Wow, pretty naked girl!" instead of the serious and non-sexual thing it is.

That scene was creepy as fuck, I think especially because, and I might be wrong, but didn't they promote it as Derek getting a ~sexy~ scene. I like the show, but sometimes I feel like it misses its own point.

Re: op

Yeah, that scene. I think it's fine if you didn't pick up on it the first time through.

This is actually why I asked for other people's interpretations of that scene. I wanted to know if I was being oversensitive. This is because I know I kind of am to rapey scenes. I honestly blame the first rape scene I ever saw. I had to watch Rosemary's Baby in one of my classes and the teacher never warned for the rape scene. She warned for the ending, but not the rape scene. But yeah, wooooo nightmares~!

But no, what you say totally makes sense. There are a lot of scenes with rape overtones and they all kinda make me twitch. For me it was just that the hospital scene, in particular, was just too much for me.

Re: op

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-03-27 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Argh, sorry for deleting my comment.

The scene that made me twitch and imo went too far was Peter attacking Lydia in the field. That was...way over the top rapey. And it seemed to go on forever.

Re: op

I thought it was intentionally predatory. The body language Derek was giving off was ott sexual and CREEEEEEPY but in the dub-con sort of way I see in fanfic and other stories about young women wanting to be dominated by a stronger guy. If I ever got the inkling that I was supposed to think that scene was okay, positive, acceptable behaviour, I'd have probably dropped the show tbh.

Re: op

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-03-27 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
It could have been and I'm just not giving the writers enough credit. But then that brings up a whole slew of different problems. Like, what is Derek doing, wasn't he a rape victim? (Is that why he's doing it? Because he doesn't understand the difference or something?) Why when the two dudes get bites it's ambiguous as to whether it's good or bad but for the chick it's not? Why is the chick the only one to get the sexual bite? Why was this never really brought up again?

Like... either way you look at it there are problems. Plus one anon said they advertised it as Derek's love scene or something?

Re: op

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2013-03-27 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's more that I'm the one giving the show too much credit because I want to hope that it will ever acknowledge how terrible it's characters can be. I mean, what was that with Derek essentially "seducing" Erica into taking the bite, and then acting as if he wasn't purposefully leading her on during the "MWAH you need to stop macking on me" scene? I keep waiting for some character to say something, to lampshade anything, but apparently that's going to be Peter's job.

Peter. Peter who's still hilarious and entertaining, mind, but still Peter 8|

"Why when the two dudes get bites it's ambiguous as to whether it's good or bad but for the chick it's not? Why is the chick the only one to get the sexual bite?"

Because as much as Jeff Davis likes to spout on about how Teen Wolf takes place in a world where sexism, racism, and misogyny whatever, doesn't exist, he doesn't actually write a world without any of that.
