You seem like one of the good ones. I like you. The problem is that Advent Children is almost a completely new invention of characterization and plot, so it gets frustrating when there is no differentiation between the two and people completely disregard the original game. Really, if the creators had done a better job with their own canon there'd be far fewer problems. All of my frustration with new canon can be directly traced back to the fuckers who started it, i.e. Squeenix. :I

Even if sometimes I think I sound like I'm shitting on new fans ... really, can I blame them for thinking Reno is a bumbling comic relief good guy after what Advent Children presented? Playing the game will give you different interpretations, but the definition of "new fan" implies that it's going to take some time to trace back to the roots of a source and really integrate yourself in it fully. Everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Lordy lordy, you speak truth.

My roommate just finished the game a couple of weeks ago for the first time, and she'd already seen Compilation crap. Her reactions to the differences in not just characterization, but sheer atmosphere and environment really drove it home for me how shitty Squeenix is.

You know what it really comes down to? All these new fans could have enjoyed something of genuine quality and gotten into a fandom worth having if Nomura wasn't a total cockbag sellout.

7. ..................HIGHLY APPROVED

[identity profile] powercorrupts.livejournal.com 2007-09-20 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
12. Points for trying! I really don't care whether or not someone has played the game all the way through, because although the Compilation ensured that a huge number of fans hadn't, the FFVII fandom had a high percentage of that to start off with.

It's more a matter of the people who honestly believe that they can formulate theories, or carry on indepth discussions about the game. Or even more annoying to me - the people who write during or pre-game fic. Nothing ruins a fantastic fic for me like someone totally borking up the order in which events happened, or describing them wrong. People like the secret poster yesterday, and others, who say they have no interest in playing the game, but want to write fic and are convinced that they're not making mistakes - those are the people who I find annoying in the fandom.

I'm one of those crazy FFVII "PLAY THE GAME OMG" people, and I wish it wasn't such a divisive issue, but so many people honestly think that wikipedia and their best friend's summary of a 40+ hour game is sufficient for being an expert and an awesome FFVII fan.

As for the game, like someone else suggested, watching a friend can help. Have you tried gamefaqs.com? When in doubt, I suggest grinding - I think the only boss in FFVII with a level that's adjusted by yours is the last one, so if you're having trouble beating things, just beat on some little monsters and get exp. I never found FFVII that hard, because it's a cakewalk compared to FFIV and FFVI, but compared to games like Kingdom Hearts or FFXII, it's a lot more difficult. If it were the newest FF game, I'd say to hell with it, go to youtube and watch the cutscenes, but FFVII's FMVs actually covered very little of the plot, and it's so old that it's probably hard to find all the other scenes anywhere.

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2007-09-20 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Kind of OT but I don't think FFXII was that easy; I think it was actually a bit of a throwback to the days of harder games. (I know that some people, used to the games getting progressively easier, were shocked that you had to actually grind in FFXII.) FFX would be a better example.

...but then, I'm someone who started with FFX and then went back and played everything (except for FFT or FFTA) from FFIV on up, using emulators when necessary, so I may have a bit of a skewed perception.

I'm either:

A) Spamming with billions of delicious twincest arts.

B) Writing some uber hot porns and spamming every Ouran comm that allows the pairing that I can think of.

Or C) Play 'Cry Me a River', juuuust for you.

4. If it wasn't for the Internet in general, I probably would have never heard about my favorite bands ever. oO;;;
17. I do this ALL the time. :O! I can't stand Shadouge from Sonic fandom, but listening to Poe's "Terrible Thought" makes it fun and awesome for 4:41 minutes. And I hate Sonamy. But if it's Amy Stalkerism to Stone Temple Pilots (Sex Type Thing) or Garbage (#1 Crush), I'm aaaaaaaaaaaaall for it. :o
19. Sailor fuku is always in season! :D
24. I love you! I can't stand those kind of secrets either. :/

hey you guys! Fandom secrets was in my dream last night! In my dream, people were on my computer and found my secrets that I'd saved...

2. Cry moar, if you think fandom won't grow over time, you're a fuckig idiot. People will like what they want to like, twincest in a manga/anime OHNOEZ NON EXISTENT SIBLINGS ARE FUCKING, HOW DISGUSTING. Please.

12. Personally, I don't care if someone has played the games or not, i'm not too involved in the fandom, but I don't think it matters. There are people out there who have played the game 4 times over and still make shittier fanfiction than those who haven't played at all.

24. Oh shit, Dr. Phil has spoken. Best secret ever.

32. So many people need to be told this. "I'm moving to Japan for the yaoiz" is stupid.

27. Why do people pretend to like something they don't just because their friends like it? Possibly the weirdest thing i've seen in fandom.

39. Cute! I adore their relationship too, while most people can't see past the rude/abusive side of him, he's really more than that. I know I wouldn't get along with someone like him though. lol

2. I vaguely remember it!
7. One sided, I can totally see that happening. Ew though.
9. they do.
15. aw that's gorgeous!
18. Probably just the grain of rice that tipped the scales...
30.You create the fandom yourself. If you want to see it, you *are* the fandom. Just go for it, and you'll probably collect others along the way.
31. Oh how I agree. Slash too.
32. I don't know why people don't understand that. Or they write gay stories set in Japan and no one ever is homophobic ever, because it's Japan...
35. I dunno, I think he has exclusive relationships sometimes. But most of it not.

12. Play it! You won't regret it. :3

24. IAWTS!

26. Me too. It's frustrating.

28. IAWTS. Iroh's the reason I got into the show in the first place, but a death scene with him could be epic and could help bring on some character development.

5. So, you don't like twincest, eh? So then . . . don't watch the anime or read the manga? Simplest way I can think of to avoid it in Ouran. Also, some of us can't get the manga, not matter how much we try or want to. And even if some people can but just don't want to? Who cares? People are allowed to like the anime more than the manga. Get over it.

31. FUCKIN-A

2. Yay, FranziskaxAdrian!

12. At least you're honest and you would like to play the game. I doubt anyone would respect you any less for that. There are some newer fans who are a serious part of the problem with the fandom, however the fandom was never some magical place of awesomeness. There's always been badfic, always been the annoying fanbrats, it's just AC brought with it a sudden new influx of them and some of the older fans didn't appreciate their locus-like behaviour of moving into the fandom and draining it for all it was worth before moving on to the next.

21. So when I bind my boobs down and run around in crossplay I'm a guy, right?

26. I relate to this so very much. I have so many ideas that I want to write but I rarely do because of my own standards. I end up killing my own inspiration. So I attribute it to being a fanartist and saying I'd rather draw it than write it ... but honestly, I'd rather read something than look at something, so I'm lying to myself.

35. Oh god, bad Jack Harkness RP. I'm not surprised.

36. HO'SHIT, a Cambridge Spies secret! Well, there's certainly nothing weird about lusting after Sir. Blunt like that, especially played delectably by Sam West. I alternated between having crushes on all of the actors (and two of the characters) in that series, including the 'blink-and-you'll-miss-'im' role of Julian Bell who was so very pretty (and related to V.Woolf! I'm such a famewhore). But Hollander as Burgess? Especially in the first episode before he slightly lost touch with the reality of their situation? jadsf;kfjsd
