Wow, so much this. You can say something isn't your thing, or you tried it and didn't like it, but you can't actually talk about something to me if you haven't seen it.

I'm surprised at how many people seem to think this is fine (especially with movies and shows that haven't even AIRED yet)

I agree. And there have been too many cases of this seen in the Tumblr SJW community to count.

Good God, yes. I am tired of seeing people bash shows, movies and books only to have never seen, watched or read the very thing they are bashing.

Even worse is when you confront those people, they respond, "I don't need to see it to know it's stupid. It looks stupid." Or the oh, too common, "I don't need to see it to know it's a rip-off of (fill in the blank). That's what everyone says."

Ugh.

What do you mean "never experienced/etc any form of media"? Like, if I've never listened to music I can't criticize music? This just seems so odd. Who starts criticizing forms of media they haven't experienced?

It's even worse when they try to criticise the 'issues' in the show. Yes, my show has problems, no you can't discuss those problems with me because you don't even know what those problems are in the first place.

This is why, when I've heard something that costs money to read or see is terrible in some way, I don't interact with it in any way. In order to have an informed opinion, I'd need to read or see it, and if it's really that terrible, I don't want to give the author money.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Just to be difficult: If you have never seen/watched/heard/experienced any form of media firsthand, you are a rare specimen and should be put in a museum, if only we could get you in there without exposing you to some form of media.

Agreed! I see this a lot when a popular reviewer pans something and suddenly everyone and their grandmother hates it. Even if you agree with someone's opinions most of the time, I think it's a bit weird if you agree without even trying to experience the thing they're talking about.

I now like to think there are a different kind of fandom conspiracy theorists that investigate the odd and paranormal happenings. The neckbeard is the new bigfoot, and the SJWs are the little green men made up by TPTB to hide a bigger lie within a lie they want you to believe and

I used to be like this with Buffy. I figured it was about a dumb blonde who slayed vampires, dated them, and didn't really care about much else.

... sure, she did have a thing for dating vampires after slaying them, but man was I ever wrong. Now it's one of the few shows I like.

Pretty much yeah.

I mean, you can give your opinion, but I think you should at least give it with the caveat that you haven't actually seen/read it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm totally with you, OP. If I have to suffer through 50 Shades of Grey in order to criticize it past "it's not my thing" then so do you (general you). My biggest pet peeve is when they say they read other negative reviews about it on the internet so that means they understand it enough to criticize it. Yeah, no. At least try to be open-minded. I think saying something isn't your thing is a perfectly acceptable reason to not like something, but you can't turn around and hate on something you haven't given a fair chance.

It is super fun to be told how something doesn't have enough gay/non-white/female/etc characters. Ask them to name the ones there are and them say they don't know. If you don't know how can you say there aren't enough?

You read read some article on a website or blog on tumblr and are parroting what they said. Stop.

I know! I hear my BIL repeating my hatred of Twilight, and I'm like, dude! You haven't even read it! How do you know you'll hate it as much as I did?

Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis.

Also, reading something else from the same publisher doesn't count - no, you're not qualified to comment on Wonder Woman or Batwoman because you read the first issues of Red Hood and Suicide Squad.

Agreed. This is why I could never talk about Elementary civilly with one of my friends. Despite the fact that she has only seen promos of it and never an actual episode, she's convinced it's an awful rip-off of the canon and that BBC Sherlock is superior to it.

There was this one episode of Merlin where Arthur caught Gwen and Lancelot together the night before their (Arthur and Gwen's) wedding and banished her from Camelot and everyone gave Arthur so much shit for it. Came to find out that most of the people who were criticizing him didn't even watch the show.

Like, seriously, just STFU. You don't know the characters, you don't know their circumstances, you don't know ANYTHING, so do us all a favor and shut up.

Twilight is another one. I've read all of the books (because I'm the kind of person who HAS to finish what they start (like Merlin), have seen all of the movies, and therefore can definitely say that the series is complete bullshit. I can't count the number of times I'd commiserate with someone about Twilight's many faults only to find out that they've never even finished the first book/saw past the first movie.

It's so aggravating, and I tend to just walk away or end the discussion because I can't. One girl actually told me that she didn't have to read/watch the series to know that it's shit. I was like, SERIOUSLY?

People like that are even worse than the rabid fangirls.

So much of this in Game of Thrones.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this to an extent: if people have done enough research on said piece of media to form a coherent argument against it, I feel that it counts. Granted, this really only applies to horrible shitfests like Twilight and its spinoff just because they are so objectively bad that sometimes the only way to experience it is second-hand via in-depth sporkings and reviews.

But then again, my partner is the masochist and experiences shitty media first-hand just so he has this leg to stand on, so I get to hear all about how bad it is and why straight from him. It's like my own personal reader's digest. And I get to get into the arguments over the internet about it all so he doesn't have to. It's a win-win situation! ...sort of.

I know I'm guilty of having opinions about stuff I haven't fully seen, but I usually qualify all my comments with stuff like "As far as I know..." and "I have heard other people say...".

I don't like to act like I know stuff when I really don't.
