I find it kind of annoying

[personal profile] inkmage 2013-05-20 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
whenever someone inevitably replies to "what is xyz, I see it all the time and don't understand it, can someone explain?" with "Learn how to Google!"

I mean, yes, I see where they're coming from - it is annoying to clog up forum space with inane questions - but on the other hand, whenever I ask a question like that, I usually also want to discuss it with people. If I'm asking you for an explanation, I don't want what Wikipedia or Urban Dictionary can tell me, I want to know what the group's opinions are - I'm not just asking for a three-word sentence, I'd like to know some of the context behind it.

What are your thoughts on this? Does no one else do this? Are the "learn how to Google" people making a good point or are they just assholes?

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-05-20 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? Whoever you like more/knew of first/whatever will obviously be the first person you think of when you hear the name. Now, I don't know who this particular white guy is, but I don't think there is anything "problematic" about it.

How can I feel guilty for something that's not even wrong in the first place?

...great, now I know how I'm going to be parsing M— sur M— next time I read Les Misérables.

I think Dany's wig looks fine.

They have wigs?

I did not know this, and now I feel stupid, or unobservant?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is STILL stealing.

Your neighbor has a nice car. You want to buy it. He doesn't want to sell it. So you take it anyway, because you should have a nice car, and it's his fault he doesn't want to sell it to you.

Theft.

I would have hate to see what would have happened if Rapunzel had never got away. Rapunzel aged and Gothel would have had to known that her "daughter" was not going to be around forever. That in order to pass on the magic, Rapunzel was going to need to have a child to pass her powers to and then would have Gothel done? I shudder to think.

Re: because in mcu wolverine is totes 5'3", right?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
my point is they're not sticking to canon anyway so why not change? tony is too short, bruce banner is too big, nick fury got a race makeover

the changes don't annoy me but the comics argument doesnt work here

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, some parents have been known to kill their kids and themselves because no one else can love them as much as they do.

Attitude towards retcons?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
What are you guys' attitude towards retcons in fiction? Hate them? Okay with them? Like them in some genres and mediums but not others? Like only good retcons? Or always prefer to deal with things as they happened rather than retcon them away, even stupid stuff?

She seems realistic enough to me. As someone who hasn't read the comics, I assumed her usual role was as a spy/assassin type. Less emphasis on super strength but definitely the speed, technique and smarts to keep up.

Nor do I. In fact, I didn't realize Emilia wasn't blonde until later (I didn't think she was as light-haired as on the show, but blonde nonetheless). Honestly I've seen worse in TV, and I can't even tell who wears wigs on GoT.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh. Scarjo is pretty forgettable in that role. Along with Mr. Renner.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I just love that you use the picture where she's literally snuggling Rapunzel's hair as opposed to her.

That's what it means in non-fiction. In fiction, it's imitating that to give a sense of verisimilitude.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Except with pirating he still has the car.

They're just calling the OP racist for thinking of the white dude first, because that was probably the fastest way to achieve maximum wank on this secret.

Eh I'm from Norway, I am blonde and I have dark eyebrows...

When I was a child my hair was basically white, it is quite a bit darker now, but my eyebrows does not match my hair colour...

? The filming seemed to make him look short enough to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't blame people for doing it, I'd do it. But if people were more realistic about the business aspect of media they'd be less angry perhaps. Perhaps not though. Whatev..

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Star Trek was the first thing I've actually seen him in, though I am aware of the... fandom. I have to say he does have a very smooth sensibility to him, or at least "Harrison" did. In pics and gifs I always thought he was weird-looking, but his face was actually interesting to see in motion. Something about the blue of his eyes and the way he draws his brows, I think.

His voice is awesome, though. That dragon's gonna sound bitchin'.

My eyebrows are also darker than my natural hair colour. I dye my hair, but by nature, my eybrows are a few shades darker.

Bwahaha. Too soon? What she did isn't some kind of tragedy. If anything it was empowering for other women. Albeit rich women since normal folks can't usually afford the testing and procedure, but women nonetheless!
