13 is still childhood with plenty of time left for nostalgia. Don't fret.

Nah. You might of just not liked it. I watched it fairly young (7-8) and don't really care for it.

I saw it when I was thirteen!

Of course, that was opening night in the '70's....

I didn't watch it until I was twelve and I still have plenty of childhood nostalgia for it! Don't worry anon, there's time. Once the JJ Abrams movies are out I'm sure you'll look back on that time with a warm breath of wistful remembrance for when you were young and the franchise was less terrible.

I saw it when I was 8 on TV back in '95 and again when it was re-released in 1997 when I was 10 on VHS, I still love it til this day. I can't wait for dark_jedi from the OT forums to complete this preservation so that I could watch both the theatrical and '97 cuts the way I did when I was a kid.

As far as which Star Wars I saw in theaters and it wasn't the OT, it was
The Phantom Menace
in 1999. I still have all the nostalgia to Star Wars. :D

I saw them when I was six and never re-watched them. I just smile and nod when people talk about the plot. All I remember are robots and Leia.

You can be nostalgic for something you viewed when you were 13. I feel X-Files nostalgia all the time and I started watching when I was 14.

I just found out my new supervisor at work has never seen a single Star Wars. My question was, how do you grow up in America, being slightly older than my 32 years, and have NEVER SEEN A SINGLE STAR WARS? It broke my brain a little. (Of course, I'm the same anon who had Chewbacca as an imaginary best friend as a little girl, so what do I know about what's normal in people's lives?)

I saw them when I was maybe 8 or 9. I don't think they're very good films nor do I understand their popularity. I don't hate them, but there's enough obnoxiousness about them that I'm getting there.

I'd seen Phantom Menace, but I didn't watch them all in order until I was 20, so ha (still managed to majorly fall in love with them and Mark Hamill)

I didn't see them until I was 14 (although I was exposed to loads of osmosis before that), and I'm sure I loved them just as much (maybe even more) than I would have loved them when I was little. I don't think you missed out on anything except maybe the experience of being fannish about them with your friends when you were very young :)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been a Star Wars fan since I was a kid, but I didn't see any Star Trek until I was 16! (I'm 20 now.)

I think the reason I prefer Trek to Wars is because I haven't been exposed to it long enough and it's still new to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't see any of them until I was about 19, I think. I was at a party at someone's house and my friend and I were hanging around with their son (probably around 7 or 8) and he wanted to watch the first one.

I definitely noticed the datedness since I was older. I also remember thinking I'd have had a huge crush on Luke if I'd seen it when I was 12 or 13.

I was 21 when Star Wars came out in 1977. So you have had more of it than I have.

Text: I didn't see these movies until I was 13.

I love them, but I feel like I missed out on having them be a part of my childhood, and the nostalgia that so many people have for them. It makes me sad that I didn't discover them sooner.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It's OK. If it wasn't Star Wars, it would be something else. New stuff will come out and you will have no childhood memories of it because you are no longer a child. Also, Star Wars is for all ages, so childhood memories are not required. My grandpa was nearly 50 when he first saw it and he's always loved it.

I once had a guy tell me (in not so many words) that you don't have a real appreciation for Star Wars unless you saw it in the theater in 1977 and happened to be a male between the ages of, say, 7 and 19 at the time. I guess pretty much everyone I know who likes Star Wars doesn't appreciate it because we're all too young, too old, or too female! If people give you a hard time about it or tell you you saw it "too late" or something, you have my permission to side-eye them.

I kind of feel that way about Harry Potter. It was out when I was a kid, but I didn't read it until I was in college because I was one of those kids who was too cool to read kids books :\

Well damn. I still haven't seen them and I'm 25 years old. Everything I know about Star Wars I learned from Lego Star Wars. And it wasn't until 2009 that I learned Star Trek and Star Wars had nothing to do with each other. So I think you're doing a lot better than me, OP.

I'm guessing you're young enough to have missed the heyday... all the awesome toys! I wish I still had them, and not just because some of them are worth a lot of money. I'd love to sit on the floor with Kittendaddy's grandkids and play Star Wars with them! *sigh*

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I saw Star Wars in the theater when I was five (it was either a re-release in preparation for Empire Strikes Back or just Alaska having it play forever) and it was the first movie I ever saw in a theater. And it opened up the universe for me in that, it was the first time I was really aware of anything outside of the people and things that affected me. It also really caught my imagination. It was an experience that had a lot of impact on me and it wouldn't have nearly as much if I had come to it later. So, yeah, I think I get where you're coming from.

If it makes you feel any better, OP, I didn't see the original trilogy until just last year, at age 26. My reason for waiting so long was a combination of pure inertia and the fact that I saw Phantom Menace first and it soured me on anything Star Wars for years afterwards. I regret not watching them sooner, but eh, can't change the past.
