Don't care about Sherlock, but The Empty Child + The Doctor Dances are still my favourite DW episodes.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Those were the first episodes of New Who I ever saw. What an introduction!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I've watched those 2 episodes so many times! I even bought a few of the books because I loved Captain Jack/Rose/Nine adventures so much and there weren't enough of them. I will forever love Stephen Moffat for giving that to me.

Plus it gets my daughter to want to eat bananas, because the Doctor said bananas are good! She'll even tell people at the grocery store that they're a good source of potassium, even though she doesn't know what that means. :)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too! I think it's odd how Moffat hasn't lived up to those since really. They are definitely the best DW episodes ever done, and Capt Jack is at his best as well. It's strange how Something can peak at the start and then just slowly go downhill.

This. Those two never fail to give me the feelz. It's everything I love about Nine in two episodes. If you wanna know who Nine is, watch that two-parter.

I think you're just in the wrong corners of fandom if you don't think Moffat has any fans. Trust me, he (and River Song) have more followers than detractors. I'm not one of them myself, but I've encountered more adulation than hate, personally.

Same; it all really depends on what corner of fandom you're in. I know I used to visit a website briefly where nearly everyone adored everything Moffat did, loved River Song and hated RTD. I was really relieved to find I wasn't the only one who disliked Moffat.

This. I mean nowadays they tend to be filtered into extreme love and extreme loathing, but both groups are out there. I think the main LJ comm is more RTD positive than Moffat (still minor arguments that spring up), most mainstream blog review sites tend to be really Moffat positive... tumblr's harder to pin down because there aren't really any marked-out community lines or visible divides between the different groups.

If you want to find other people to squee with, try finding a fuckyeahriversong blog or something and start tracing back the sources of things that are submitted there? You're sure to eventually find someone who likes to post meta or fic or whatever you're looking for.

No, you are being a good fan. Just the bad fans are the vocal ones. Whiny bastards so they are.

[Picture is the logo of the TV show "Doctor Who" and a promotional image of the TV show "Sherlock", with Sherlock and Watson standing and looking serious in it.]

Steven Moffat has written some of my favourite Doctor Who stories and I really liked 'A Scandal in Belgravia' (ending and all). I don't feel like I belong in fandom.

(My only issue with River Song was that she wasn't as brilliant as Bernie Summerfield, who is practically the same character.)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Judging by the lj comms if you aren't hoping for both shows to be cancelled, the archives wiped, and all cast and crew to be industry blacklisted then you are a bad fan. I've never seen such toxic fan communities, what sort of fan wants their show cancelled ffs?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree to disagree on Scandal. It was genuinely painful for me.

However, it could just mean we're looking for different things in our shows, and it certainly doesn't mean you shouldn't be in the fandom.

I agree with this secret and I still can't wait for Moffat to leave DW. So it's OK to have conflicting opinions with fandom. I have them with myself lol.

Me too.

But then there's Let's Kill Hitler.

I mean, I like Moffat. And I hate Moffat. My opinion of him needs no inner logic when his scripts have none either.

Scandal in Belgravia is my favorite Sherlock Holmes episode, and I'll always be ashamed to admit it because in my fandom circles that equates complete misogyny from my part, more so since I'm a gay guy thus a complete "woman hater".

But the thing is, I love Irene Adler, because she is the only character in Sherlock I have identified with, and not in the sexual liberalism part (I'm prudish and I like it so) but in how she played the game. I just found out so amazing to see a normally smart human going toe to toe with geniuses, even when she had to outsource the planning, maybe that's part of the appeal for me. I can relate to that, I'm not the smartest; so the idea of "playing your hand" so well is almost inspirational, sort of my own version of "you can do anything you want and be anyone you want to be"

I would have liked to see her succed in her plans, or at least get out of doge on her own, but part of me aprecciates the fallibility of the character. It's more real and relatable than Sherlock's 100% sucess rate. I don't relate to him at all.

And the idea of falling for someone despiste your orientation. That's always been something very intriguing to me. Could I fall in love with a woman?

Of course, SiB is not the best episode, but it's my favorite for these reasons. I admire Irene Adler, and she is the only character in Sherlock I feel a connection with.

I don't watch Sherlock, but as far as Who goes, I think he's a much better writer than showrunner. Give him one episode to work with, & more often than not, he's good. Give him an entire season, though? Not so good.

Moffat's writing is like ice cream

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2013-07-01 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
One or two scoops every once in a while, and it's the greatest thing ever. But if you eat the whole box at once, you're going to end up with a headache and completely sick of it.

(This pains me to say because the temperature where I live hasn't reached triple digits for fifty years and this is my last tub of mint chocolate chip.)

Moffat stories I love:

The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances
Blink
The Eleventh Hour
The Big Bang
A Study In Pink

Moffat stories I hate:

Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead.
Let's Kill Hitler
The majority of his time as showrunner (so +20 points to this side, even if he didn't write the episodes himself).

A Scandal In Belgravia I have mixed feelings on. In terms of style, I think it's the best episode of S2. It got the biggest emotional punch out of me. Yes, even more than TRF. It's kind of a guilty pleasure in that regard. In other ways, I hate it for Irene's problematic character - despite Lara Pulver being all kinds of awesome - and the way that John is handled in the episode as though he might as well have not even been there.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-01 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I like a lot of his episodes.
