Don't google him?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-23 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
A long time ago, I found the blog of a sort-of-famous person's relative, and I posted links to porn of the famous person (including some incest porn of him and the non-famous relative) in the comments of the blog, until he threatened to IP ban me.

So even if you don't go looking for it, someone might bring it to you.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-23 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Why did you do that? And more importantly, why did you tell us about it?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-23 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Why?

Because you "get to know" the "characters" that an actor projects and the personality that you put on them and it's fun to pair them up. I enjoy RPF just as much as I do fandom shipping.

I'm pretty sure that you shouldn't be looking up fan works of your brother if he ever gets famous. Even if it's not RPF, there could be naked drawings or other things.

And, creepy fanworks of him are probably not the worst parts of fame so maybe you should think of those things.

(Just wait until people ship you two!)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-23 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Every time someone brings up how creepy RPF is someone inevitably comes in and talks about how the person is 'projecting a character.'

And that's creepy-as-fuck.

[Picture is purple text on a blank white background with purple borders.]

My brother's an amazing actor. I find Real Person Fic weird and disturbing. Why does fandom start pairing off the actors and not just their characters? It's the character(s) that attracted you in the first place, so why... Just whyyyyy? I'm worried that when these two worlds collide, I will run across creepy fan works about him.

Secret because: Can you say counting them chickens?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-23 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I have written one RPF in my life. ONE.

And the person's sister found it :\

god damn.

because a lot of times, through interviews and such, we see the actors being cute together and start shipping them. In my case, I only have one RPF ship. I know very well they aren't together and know they're happy with their SOs but I still think they're cute together and like to read fic about them.

it's also not really the actors anyway because we'll never really know what they're like, only what they let the public see. Authors are still making up their personalities and everyday lives, for the most part.

Exactly. And how exactly is that different than reading an article in one of those magazines at the checkout lane about whether he's dating her? (Besides the fact that it's usually he's dating him in RPF.)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
So many rationalizations for RPF'ing in this thread. You are morally lacking. No matter how many excuses you make you are not good people and should be judged.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, I write fics about actors fucking each other therefore I have no morals. That's me and proud of it!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I despise RPF but your wording here cracks me up *lol*

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no not *judged*
You sound fun.

If that's the WORST thing someone is doing in their life to be 'judged' for... I think I'm kind of okay with that.

And look at all the sanctioned RPF. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, any movie ever made about real people, gossip magazines.

I think what bothers most people about RPF is the sexual aspect of some fics. Also yes, there are a certain vocal minority that have no boundaries and are creepy as fuck when it comes to not understanding that shit you write =/= truth or real life, and that whatever fantasies you have inside your own head don't need to be told to the people involved, but those people are the minority.

And honestly, they'd probably be batshit crazy about the real people even if they weren't writing RPF. They're probably the kind of people that would write creepy letters about being the person's one true love. But they're not the majority.

Unf, judge me harder, anon.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
do you just not understand the concept of the actors having lives outside of their characters and therefore the audience seeing them in more 'natural' contexts (or as natural as a celebrity can be when not actively playing a scripted role) or...?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
that's what i got out of this too. OP is so uncomfortable with RPF that they don't have much idea of how it works.
If I read Pine/Quinto fic, it's very removed from the actual actors. It's fanfiction for that buddy comedy they perform on press tours. It's not because Kirk/Spock wasn't enough for me (I don't even ship that).

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't bother me. I found RPF of me once and I read it and I'm not sitting over here in a corner crying in the fetal position.

Besides, you think you know a person from his or her public persona and you are all so wrong. It's just another part. If you want to make fiction based off what you see in interviews and at Comic-Con and stuff like that, it's no different than fan fiction based on scripted characters.

Anybody with a modicum of intelligence and self-confidence isn't bothered by fan fiction. It's flattering. Really. You think I can bend that way? You think I can bend that way with that person? Have it at. You think my backside looks that good? As long as I am not being kidnapped off the street or violently harassed by people who want to act it out or something, who am I (or who is anyone, really) to restrict someone else's creativity?

And it's, in a small way, almost like free publicity. It keeps the subject in a spotlight, in the forefront of people's minds, even if it's just 20 people. I'm not doing a thing, but there's potential for new audiences because someone thought to write or draw or make a video.

Just don't shove it in anyone's face or expect the "right" people to be reading it. It's best kept to the fandom. It's just polite, ok?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm an avid RPS fan. I do not deny that. I ship all sorts of bad things between actors, based on their interactions with one another. It's fun, and often sexy, but I DEFINITELY don't think it's real.

However...I get where you're coming from. A friend of mine is gaining a fan following for his music career (album on iTunes, he's headlining in a Broadway production, etc.), and some of his fans are CREEPY. Like, it freaks me out that I've found RPF self-insert fic about him. I started to read it for a laugh, but it was SO awkward that I had to stop.

Yeah, never Google your brother or check his Tumblr tag.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand famous people who look at their tumblr tags anyway (or relatives/friends of famous people who do it). I mean that's just asking for trouble. You might as well look yourself up on AO3 or ask about yourself on 4chan or something.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
OP I know two people IRL who have a fandom and RPF written about them. I just avoid looking for it, and in the case of one of them, I'm in a related fandom (his show has a spin off..) so I have to actively avoid discussions about him as a person, and I don't read fics with his character in any sex scenes, only if the character is just there on the sidelines.

It's not that difficult to avoid it.
