Yeah...but following your heart in Ponyville isn't going to end in crippling student loans and a job not in your field of choice, & it wouldn't be interesting (or fun) to watch that.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
yes. My Little Pony and Tinkerbell should be about the generally depressing and stressful processes of choosing career paths, paying bills, and learning to interact with assholes.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I know a lot of people who got the whole "ur a special snowflake!" message but missed out on the "how to interact with assholes on a day to day basis" lesson.

That would actually make for an interesting episode. Twilight discovers she hates magic and has wasted years of her life working towards something she no longer has any interest in, giving her no (or few) transferable skills to apply to another career.

That said, the happiest people I know are the ones who found a way to do what makes them happy.

Idk in my experience figuring out what your 'purpose' is relatively easy. Making it happen, and being able to also make a living and survive is a whole different story.

That varies a lot from person to person. You are extremely lucky if you were able to figure out what you wanted to be when you grew up, before you grew up. Many people don't until well after.

...But in MLP, isn't the point of learning your "true calling" or whatever that you try a lot of different things to see what you like best? I think that's a pretty okay lesson to teach kids, especially since in the real world, it's perfectly doable to have a job you're not all that big on and keep up a hobby of what you do like to do. Sort of, oh, like how kids have to go to school, but they can also do other things that they like.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
idk, the cutie crusaders seem to be having a pretty tough time figuring our what their purpose in life is

also it's a cartoon whose target demographic is four year olds (even if it does appeal to people that are much older. and sometimes creepier). it's not really shocking that there isn't an episode where fluttershy can't find a job and becomes impoverished and turns to alcohol to cope with her problems. or when pinkie pie's partying ways catch up to her in the form of a cocaine addiction. there's nothing wrong with having happy cartoons where everything works out, there's plenty of time for children to find out how much life can suck. let them have a few nice years if they can

But ... Cutie Mark Crusaders ...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I go back and forth on this one. I think MLP actually does a pretty good job with the Cutie Mark Crusaders, by showing that finding out what you love *and* are good at takes effort and a willingness to try (and fail!) all kinds of new things.

I think it's hard to expose a 6yo (my example, because that's how old my kid is) to the hard facts of life. I don't think it's dream-crushing to show favorite characters failing or struggling more realistically, I guess, but I do think that exposure needs an optimistic ending, unless you want a country full of world-weary nine-year-olds.

[Picture is the cast from the cartoon "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" and the cast from the CGI animated films "Disney Fairies".

Friendship Is Magic cast from left to right and top to bottom: Pinkie Pie, a pony with light blue eyes, a fluffy pink mane and tail and pastel pink coat. Rainbow Dash, a pegasus pony with with a rainbow colored mane and light blue coat and magenta eyes. Twilight Sparkle, a unicorn pony with a dark blue mane with a pink streak and a purple streak running in the middle, a pale violet coat and purple eyes. Rarity, a unicorn pony with a purple curled mane and tail, white coat and royal blue eyes. There is a picture of three blue diamonds on her hip. Applejack, a pony wearing a light brown cowboy hat, blonde mane and tail tied at the ends, light orange coat and a picture of three red apples on her hip. She has green eyes. And Fluttershy, a pony pegasus with pastel pink mane and tail, pastel yellow coat and turquoise eyes. Pinkie Pie is standing on her rear legs, holding herself up with a front leg on Rarity's head, who is sitting down and raising a front leg daintily. Rainbow Dash appears to be hovering, Twilight is sitting in the middle, Applejack is standing up and raising a front leg and Fluttershy is laying down in front of all.

Disney Fairies cast, from left to right (they all have gossamer wings and handmade shoes? matching their general color scheme, pointy ears and look like small female humans around teenagehood or young adulthood): Iridessa, with black hair pulled back in a bun, somewhat dark skin and wearing a sleeveless yellow dress. Tinkerbell, with light olive skin, blonde hair pulled back in a bun and wearing a strapless, sleeveless light green dress. Rosetta, with long wavy red hair, light olive skin and wearing a pink strapless, sleeveless dress. Fawn?, with light tanned skin, long brownish red hair pulled back, wearing orange shorts and a sleeveless red dress or long blouse over that. Silvermist, with long black hair, light skin and blue dress with only the right strap and no sleeves. Vidia, with light skin and very long dark blue hair pulled up in a high ponytail, wearing tight purple pants and a short sleeveless blouse or dress over that. They're flying on a field, hugging each other and posing for the camera.]

It bothers me when a children's cartoon has characters that figure out their skill and purpose in life in an easy way. It's not easy to find your destiny in real life and some people go through their entire lives not knowing what they're meant to be. Teaching kids to "follow their heart and their destinies will reveal themselves" is a pretty poor lesson when it's not conducive to real life.

Destiny isn't a real thing, though. Humans don't have destinies. Life has no real purpose. I think shows that have that in their lore are fun for kids. Let them dream while they still can

The purpose of the MLPFIM at least (I don't know about the other one) isn't to prepare children for the adult world; it's to teach them lessons about navigating the immediate world they are in* - basic things like how to be decent, how to stand up for yourself without being a jerk, how to be selfless and why it pays off, etc. It does a fair job of that, I think. Children will have plenty of time to figure out that finding your purpose in life isn't a cakewalk, but at least by then they'll have some basic skills for the here-and-now - or at least that's the idea.

*Yes, I know that the REAL purpose of the show is to sell toys. But work with me here.

I kinda liked the way they've done it with the Cutie Mark Crusaders, because they haven't "found their destiny" yet, and the moral seems to be a little bit less of "follow your heart" and a little bit more of, "be open to new experiences, do what you enjoy, and learn what comes next."

And not everyone's "destiny" was exactly their job. Pinkie Pie realized what she wanted to do was to spend her life making people happy. She works in a bakery, which is a nice start for partying, but she does her "special talent" on her own time.

Rarity's "special talent" doesn't give her any easy outs. In fact, all her special talent does is let her find gems more easily, which is handy, but not even near the top of the list of things that she needs to do for her job. Instead, when the show focuses on Rarity's job, they show the truth--that being an artist of any kind, even a fashion designer and seamstress, can be stressful, requires self-discipline, preparation, hard work, and networking, and that it doesn't always get to be "fun."

There's nothing wrong with telling people to follow their passions. Sometimes, yeah, that won't work out. That's life. It's still better to at least find a passion and try to make something out of it.

Isn't the entire first movie about Tinkerbell learning to apply her talent to get what she wants, though? At least after she tries other things?

What bothers me THE MOST isn't the idea that ~zomg out there's your true calling, follow your dreams~! That's actually pretty nice. What bothers me is the idea of "destiny". Yeah, is a show for little kids and all, but it seems to me the Cutie Mark is more like "HERE'S THE DESTINY YOU SHOULD FOLLOW, IT'S NOW BRANDED INTO YOUR SKIN AS IT WAS PREORDAINED" instead of "Oh, so you've found yourself what you want to do! Have a magical tattoo to symbolize adulthood!".

True for most kids' shows, but I thought MLP didn't do too badly addressing it with the Cutie Mark Crusaders?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm fifty-one and I have no fucking clue what my purpose in life is.

Since everyone is just talking about ponies...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I really don't think that Tinkerbell figured out her skill in an easy way, but there's only so much you can put into a script for one kids movie.

I really liked that she wasn't cool with her talent at first and tried to do other things until realizing that being crafty is something you can be proud of. I was expecting something horrible to come out of the Disney's Fairies franchise; super dumbed down shit equal to dangling a bunch of keys in front of a baby for a while.
But in my opinion the Fairies are everything the stupid Disney Princess line SHOULD be. A bunch of female characters who get shit done and grow together as people, not as female stereotypes.

It's not about finding your true calling, more about realizing what your strenghts are and making the best out of it instead of aiming for something you'll never be able to achieve.

3 words: Cutie Mark Crusaders. They've been trying for 3 seasons, now, and still nothing.
