By your logic, we shouldn't ever watch series or movies in another language because subtitles might be slightly unreliable. The fact that you don't trust subtitle sites is entirely your problem, don't you think?

Ad for representation, I'm with you all the way. You might also want to check what else this actress played in (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marlee_Matlin), check her out on the West Wing, she was awesome.

She's the only deaf character I've ever seen who had her own agency and wasn't completely dependent on someone else.

Perhaps you might like "Read my Lips". It's about a hard of hearing/almost deaf woman who works a boring job in which she's ignored by everyone who falls in love with the ex-con who starts working in her firm. The actress is not deaf or hard of hearing, but the film is really good.

Have you heard of the show Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye? It stars a deaf woman who is self reliant, smart, and kickass.

I think the OP's point is less about subtitles and more that they're glad this character isn't portrayed as some weak but wise innocent disabled soul, as so often portrayed in shows and film. I'm sick of it myself, and while I don't watch this show, am glad to hear that they've created a character who just happens to be deaf - and more than holds her own.

And no, it doesn't make you a SJW.

She's in "The L Word" for a couple seasons, too. She speaks sometimes because no-one else knows sign. It always bothered me how quickly Bette learned it from internet videos. I was so happy when I saw an interview with her and found out she's actually deaf. Representation was totally my first thought.
