So my period never came, but the pee stick says I'm not pregnant.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
What it says.

For the record, I do not want to be pregnant.

But, I've been traveling, sort of lost track of my period, and then figured I was like a week late. It's been over 2 weeks by now. 3-6 day variations are not unusual for me, but this is atypically long. I took a home pregnancy test and it says negative, but I have no idea how reliable that is.

So far I've been hoping it's just from over-exerting myself (I had a pretty active holiday) and that it would just kick in, but I'm not getting any signs it will. I feel fine otherwise. I mean, healthy. I have no other negative symptoms.

Right now I'm mostly just worried it might be a "didn't know I was pregnant" scenario or worse...like early menopause? a hormonal issue?

The weird thing though is I had a blood test recently and nothing was seriously out of whack, just a minor Vitamin D/folic acid deficiency.

I just feel really weird in my own body right now, ya know. Also I don't really have anyone to talk to. My bf's sweet, but he's, ya know - a dude, and doesn't quite gets how all this ladybusiness can be upsetting. And my mom...well one one hand I think she'd like a grandchild, even though it would be a horrible idea, so she's giving sort of weird ambivalent comments that aren't at all helpful. Sigh.

When did you do the test? I'd say take it again a week or two after that - I've heard stories of pregnancy tests coming back negative, and positive sometime later.

Did you at least get PMS symptoms? Crankiness, bloating and all that?

Re: So my period never came, but the pee stick says I'm not pregnant.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I did the test 2 days ago; so about two weeks after I should have gotten my period.

And no, I didn't get PMS symptoms, but to be fair I never really had extreme PMS. Sometimes I'm cranky (but hey, sometimes I'm cranky without PMS), but I get very little physical symptoms. I can totally get my period without noticing.

Re: So my period never came, but the pee stick says I'm not pregnant.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Jealous. :( I get all of them, though not extreme. Is your period fairly light? I can see it being easy to miss if you have a light period normally and overexerted yourself this time.

It's not unusual to skip a period all together without any chance of pregnancy. Wait and see if it comes back on schedule next month. I don't think one skipped period is too much to worry about, but then I'm not in your body and not a doctor so there's that.

If you're that worried, go to the doctor. They have better pregnancy tests.

I might. I just didn't want to go to some random doctor in a foreign city. I'm giving it another week, if not I'll make an appointment.

I was 10 weeks late once (with no chance of pregnancy). Never had that happen again. Sometimes I guess you just get a fluke. How old are you? Hormonal issues aren't unheard of, but I wouldn't jump to menopause just yet. If it bothers you, make an appointment with your doctor? You can always cancel if you end up getting your period in the meantime.

I'll be 33 this year. I guess it COULD be early menopause as my mom was 39 or something, but I thought it's more of a gradual process.

http://www.mypregnancybaby.com/reasons-missed-period-not-pregnant/ <--yeah, over-exertion is a normal reason to miss a period. Here's hoping you're back to normal next month, anon.

Interesting! I also suffer from minor hypothyroidism, but it's never really been an issue except for having trouble keeping off weight.

I think the only thing I or anyone else can really suggest is for you to see a doctor. There are a grand many reasons why this could be happening and none of us know very much about you. It could be something or it could be nothing. I've skipped periods before without consequence.

I would definitely talk to a doctor. I once went four months without a period and then just recently I went three months without and then I'll be normal (4 week cycles) for a few months, skip a month.

Talk to a doctor, that's your best bet and it will also help reassure you.

What ended up being the reason for it?

I was three weeks late the other month. It came along eventually. Sometimes these things just happen. If you feel fine I would keep some pads close by and not stress about it.

If you're that worried about pregnancy, wait another week and take it again. They can be iffy at the very beginning of a pregnancy when hormone levels are still low, but by three weeks it should be pretty certain.

I've - thankfully - never had a pregnancy scare so I've nothing really of substance to contribute but just commenting to show support and offer e-hugs, anon.

Hormonal issues are (at least ime) not a big deal, OP. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what it was.

My period stopped for three straight months when I was a freshman in high school. I knew it wasn't pregnancy since I'd never had sex. It turned out to be hormonal and I took some pills (I think estrogen supplements? not sure) and had a period within a week, and then it was back to normal.

Stress can also do this. Some people, I've heard, simply stop having a period for parts of the year that are more stressful. I'm not sure how normal that is though.

Have you talked to a gyn?

Re: So my period never came, but the pee stick says I'm not pregnant.

If you're really worried about it, see a doctor, it could be a sign of another problem. You mentioned you've been traveling, I know stress can bring on a period (happens a lot when women get admitted to hospitals); I've not heard of it, but maybe if you're having stress while traveling it did the opposite?

It could also just be an abnormal space between periods. Mine's usually like clockwork, but once I had a nearly three month space between one and the next for no apparent reason.

Re: So my period never came, but the pee stick says I'm not pregnant.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Traveling can screw up your period, so it's probably that or the overexertion or a mix of the two. Definitely try the test again in another week or two, but you may get your period in that time if things in your life settle down between now and then.

Well, ever since my first period I've had them mostly every two or three months instead of monthly. My health otherwise has been fine...I reckon I'm just not particularly fertile or whatever.

I was like that and it turned out (much later, when a doctor finally addressed the issue correctly) I have PCOS. Like you, I had no other symptoms and didn't really care about it, so when I got the diagnosis one of my ovaries was pretty fucked up. So I suggest you check if you have it because it can lead to serious complications when untreated.

Re: So my period never came, but the pee stick says I'm not pregnant.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Adding my "it could be normal" comment to everyone else's. Traveling or other stress or changes in your life could cause you to skip a month. You can try another pregnancy test to be on the safe side, but it's probably fine.

Er... also, I'm kind of worried that your BF doesn't "get" why you might be upset at the thought of being pregnant or having some other reproductive system issue. It doesn't matter that he's a man, surely he's smart and empathetic enough to see why it might be a big deal because if you were pregnant, it'd be a big deal for the both of you.

I'm sorry, that's nosy of me. It just... sort of rubbed me the wrong way that guys are given a pass about being clueless about these issues as if it doesn't concern them.

Re: So my period never came, but the pee stick says I'm not pregnant.

OP, nah, maybe I phrased it wrongly.

But realistically, you can just go trough all the discussion of what you'd do if you'd fall pregnant and stuff, but in the end it's your body, not his. It's not a lack of caring, it's just a difference in biology.

You're the one who's have to have the abortion, or the pregnancy, not him (regardless of what you do to a couple). I also personally find it hard to convey that even though I don't want a kid, I'd still emotionally have a problem with being labeled an infertile woman at a young age. I think it's sort of different for men because their fertility is, in theory, unlimited.

Honestly my mom's reaction upset me more (we're usually very close) but now I'm worried she might guilt-trip me over an abortion if I ever needed one.

Adding to the "holidays can mess with your cycle" crowd. Big holidays with plane rides and changing time zones especially.

I went to Europe for three weeks (from Australia) last year, and despite being on the pill and having regular, completely normal and managable periods for the last ten years, nothing happened when it was supposed to upon my return. It worried me, but my body kicked itself back into gear and the next period came on time. Maybe the same will happen for you?
