I laugh like hell every time I read Real Person Shipping conspiracy theories in other fandoms about how their lead actors are secretly being held in the closet by The Powers That Be. Not a secret either.

J2, Domlijah, and Larry tinhats all have their share of batshit theories. HOW COME BRADLEY AND COLIN HAVE NONE? They're the ones who work in a family show geared towards children. If they both came out, the show and its primary audience would be compromised. The Powers That Be would never hear the end of it from Arthurian legend purists. Bradley and Colin would both be labeled as unprofessional for all the Merlin/Arthur moments that had somehow slipped under the radar. We already know that The Powers That Be did not treat them as well as they should have and that they had both wanted to leave the show the first chance they got. If any Real Person Shipping pairing deserved a theory involving "management," it's them.

And my google-fu is weak today because I can't find anything about it other than the cast didn't want to do another series because they thought the fifth was the appropriate ending for the show. Anyone have backstory or links about how they were treated/why they wanted to leave?

In the UK, certainly in recent years, people tend to be absolutely unconcerned about whether actors are gay or not. People can be as public or private as they wish about it. It would not affect the casting of a family orientated show like Merlin one iota. Why would it? Doctor Who caters for the same sort of audience and has had gay actors and gay characters aplenty without anyone making a big deal of it at all.

Maybe there are no conspiracy theories because they never really had that much interaction off the set? Personally I think they're buddies, but they're nowhere NEAR as close as the fans would like to think.

That said, I've seen a few theories here and there. A rumour got started that they had been seen holding hands in a restaurant and there was a minor explosion on Tumblr. And one girl seemed convinced that as soon as the show was over they would make their relationship public.

But it's been nearly a year since the show ended and they've spent most of that time in completely separate countries (Bradley with his girlfriend, no less).

I'm not sure which idea is funnier...that the BBC, who aim Doctor Who at the same general audience, would panic if they were gay (and that the parents of that same general audience would be up in arms over it, despite never raising a peep over all the gay in Who), or that the Arthurian purists would be more upset by the actors being in a relationship than by, say, Sir Pellinor being killed before the Questing Beast was ever seen, or Mordred being utterly unrelated to Arthur and Morgana, or that Arthur and Morgana were raised as adopted siblings for years before it was revealed that they were biological siblings, or...
