The Ms. Scribe story is one of the best fandom drama stories. I wish other fandom drama was so well documented, just because it's so interesting.

I'm not trying to be mean, but...

I've been single my whole life. I'm not weird or anything (I don't think, anyway), but I'm in my late 20s now. And I see everyone around me in relationships, and it mostly seems to make people happy, and I'd kind of like to join the club. But it's never clicked with me. And so when people tell me "One day it will be your turn!" when there is no guarantee of that, it's kind of...not really helpful. It's not really helpful to have the people in relationships come along and say, "Oh, it's not the be-all end-all!" not because I don't believe them (because duh), but because that isn't the point. I'm in my late 20s. I have a college degree. I have a steady, if totally uninspiring, job. I have hobbies and friends and I do fun stuff in my spare time. And I do all this single, so obviously I am totally capable of handling the whole IRL thing without somebody there to hold my hand. I know it isn't the be-all, end-all. I don't think it's stupid for me to sometimes want somebody to hold my hand anyway.

Basically, it doesn't ever happen for some people, even if they aren't weird. At this point, I'm thinking I'm one of them. And that's fine because my life is awesome, but it's lonely sometimes and I don't have an SO to call and pester about that. And if this is you, there isn't really something people can say, but every time they try it just kind of reminds you that you don't have this. You pretty much have to learn to deal with it on your own.

Well, define writer?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only one who's been thinking this!

Yeah I kind of get the idea that maybe they're really socially awkward and/or backward and/or literally don't understand things or can't cope very well, especially regarding one-word responses and the like, esp. if they're not that way online and they went home and SAID they had fun. Maybe they DID have fun, or they were confused about how to interact with other people.

My ex-bf and I made a deal that if /i/ went to visit him, he paid for everything, and if /he/ came to visit me, I would pay for everything. Like, "my turf, I'll take care of it!"

That said have you tried TALKING to your friend, OP? Communication is really important and you should tell them in a private message that you are concerned because you didn't feel that they were having fun at all and so on.

My friends I've met in person mostly can't get me to STFU.

I know I've read a fic where Watson essentially whores himself to Holmes to keep Holmes from falling into those black moods that make go for the cocaine.

However, it was one of those fics. You know the type. The type where everything is framed in the context of "d'awww, look how important they are to each other!" and the author is either too young, too oblivious, or too deluded to even consider the situation to be dubcon or emotionally abusive, let alone warn for it.

Cooties. Wow. Yeah. I'm the one looking irrational here. You are channeling a 1st grader in your arguments.

Look, you got a lot of anger in you. But that's okay. There's a pill for that. There's a pill for almost everything really. You'll understand soon.

My friend writes short stories and novellas for publication, but no one in her writer's group takes her seriously because she hasn't gotten a novel published...despite her making more money then them.

So it IS a thing.

I was just using my own experiences as an example. That incident with my grandparents was actually a wake-up call for me to learn better ways of dealing with non-introverts.

No matter what I do, there are always people who see me as too quiet, uninterested, and rude. On the flip side, those people usually come off to me as loud, in-my-face, and rude, so. :p

...You know, I can't remember if I said thank you the one time I visited a fandom friend [probably did. I always have people bitching that I'm too polite] - but I can't really say I should have that time since it lead to hearing a lot of insults towards me and my family the whole time. : /

lol, mine is a cheap one from Olay--though maybe that means mine will die even sooner...

Did you like yours while it worked?

...And? I never said that they didn't, simply that shitty works have a habit of becoming popular, even if there were classics from that time that also became popular.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I always kinda thought The Seven Per-Cent Solution was kind of dumb. Not just in a tongue-in-cheek way, but just plain dumb.

I've had a couple of articles published, but they are all scientific. No fiction.

You know cooties have caused a 27% increased death rate among children 11 and under. At least I care about our first graders.

Pills? PILLS?! What about chanting in your bloodstone circle like you're supposed to?

[personal profile] tasogare_n_hime 2013-10-04 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I love AUs. All of my fanfic is AUs, mostly of the *insert character here* survives what killed them in canon/comes back from the dead AUs. Way too many characters I love get killed in canon.

I love What If AUs, Fantasy AUs, Modern Day AUs, Modern Fantasy AUs, Sci Fi AUs, pretty much any AU.

The only kinds I can think I don't like are the Dark, or Slytherin Harry fics in Harry Potter, and things like that. I've never come across one that hasn't horribly warped some, if not all the people who loved Harry in canon.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
That's certainly true.
