maybe she just doesn't enjoy ooc slash?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
whatever, man. that slash might be the holy grail of fanfic for all we know.

It's probably shit

+1 to this possibility.

Especially if it's RPF. If slash doesn't push your buttons most of it is admittedly pretty OTT. We just don't caaaaare.

Quinto looks v. good here.

Yeah, I get the sentiment, OP. The friendship does become awkward when your friend has this really stupid and aggressive attitude towards a huge group of people... IDK what to advise, really. I have plenty of homophobic relatives, but obviously it's different. You can't just ignore your friend's ideas the way you ignore you grandma's.

Still, your secret is very vague. Perhaps your suspicions are unfounded? I suggest that you talk to your friend. If they do turn out to be aggressively homophobic, it may tell you something about other aspects of their personality and whether you want to be friends with them at all.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if her friend was homophobic (I'm not saying she is), she'd probably just deny it anyway. I think most homophobes don't consciously know that they're prejudiced.

If they're so homophobic why haven't they said anything about the slash on your Tumblr or unfollowed it?

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-10-05 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
And you think they're homophobic because...? What? Did they not like your ship?

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Something she said to me in person about being "traditional" and the use of the word in a specific conversation we were having at the time. It was vague but a red flag went up considering past conversations we have had on different and similar topics.

Uhm, I don't want to sound mean :( But judging by the pic you selected for this secret... maybe, just maybe, it's not that they are homophobic... but just don't enjoy RPF? Why did you use a Pinto pic? You could have used a shot of a single gay actor, or of an actual gay couple (whether from a show, or IRL), you could've used fanart...

IDK. It's the wording + the pic here that makes me suspicious.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

I smell a troll tbh especially in light to what happened recently when pinto fangirls asked Zachary if him and Chris are more than friends and if he reads fanfictions about them. Awkward as fuck.
I don't assume everyone follows the Zachary quinto fandom so here you go an example of what happened: http://technoranma.tumblr.com/post/59544834197/full-video-of-the-panel-here-x
He was kind of rude in another comment where he said that he doesn't care about slash fanfiction and has better things to do but to be fair they keep asking him about slash even though he said he isnt interested
Shippers acted like he offended them and started filling his tag over tumblr with bashing and their broken hearts because ohmygod how dare zachary to have opinions after all it's just his real person you're writing porn fanfictions about and it's the straight character he plays that you're making gay even though he has a girlfriend
yeah, it's not like in hollywood a gay actor isn't constantly reminded that they're gay and can't play straight characters convincingly because they want to fuck every male actor they work with.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone not enjoying your OOC bullshit doesn't make them homophobic.

Have you tried REAL gay couples? Or femmeslash? Even if they're not into any of these things, their preferences do not define their character.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. So I used the wrong pic. I only used it because that was the last movie we saw together. The ship pictured (which I don't ship) actually has nothing to do with my suspicions. My suspicions have everything to do with conversations we've had about real world issues.

So. No. Someone not enjoying "OOC bullshit" doesn't make someone homophobic but thanks for jumping to conclusions and disregarding something that I'm actually worried about.

Seems ridiculous. Just drop it until a discussion where she says something comes up naturally. Then question her. "Why do you say that?" Once you make people explain the reasoning behind their words their intentions become a lot clearer and easier to argue against if necessary. Not that they always change their mind.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I can relate. Sometimes I see people posting things that, in a stranger, would make me think they have some kind of obnoxious opinion. But they're my friends, and they don't usually post like that, so I make all kinds of excuses for them. Sometimes it turns out I'm probably right because they keep posting decent stuff and whatever I didn't like was apparently a one-time mistake. Other times I just stay in denial.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I really hate the term phobic when it is used on people who might not agree with something/someone. Just because someone doesn't jump on the train doesn't mean they are afraid of it. it might be the most widely used term, it doesn't make it correct. OP needs to just talk to the friend instead of applying passive/aggressive douchebaggery via tumblr. If you are such good friends, then said friend deserves respect until proven otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
sigh

the word "phobic" and the suffix "-phobic" are similar, but not identical. for example, a hydrophobic molecule is not afraid of water, it has an aversion to water. to be ___-phobic you have to have "a fear of or aversion to" whatever the subject is. I really really wish we would get beyond the silly "but they're not afraid of gays!!" reasoning because that's not what it means at all.

not sure where op's friend really stands but your point is bullshit

i didn't realize people could disagree with me existing. and don't give me the "i disagree with your lifestyle." my lifestyle is the average american's lifestyle. who i happen to fall in love with doesn't change that.

"disagreeing with homosexuality" is homophobic.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
Hi, homophobe. Sorry your poor feefees are hurt and you want a cuddly word and to derail serious discussions.

You don't get to disagree with my existing just because it makes you uncomfortable, because that means you probably see me as less than human on some level, whether you're conscious of it or not. Certainly you think I'm "unnatural" despite natural meaning "of nature" and plenty of animals partake in homosexuality.

You think. So you don't know.

So your friend is not bothering you, or terrorizing any gay people, or doing anything that hurts anybody. You just have this vague inclination they might think something that you don't like and so you're attempting to bait them into a discussion rather than actually talking to them like a grown up?

...Regardless of your friend's views on, quite honestly, anything at all I'm thinking that they aren't the problem here.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 11:31 am (UTC)(link)
Losing a stable friendship of a long time is a scary thing. I can't blame OP, especially over such a dealbreaker as gay rights. Especially when it's possible that OP is quietly homosexual herself and that's why this is so important to her. In that case, saying it outright might bring her under fire and cause very deep wounds.

I hate to break it to you but even if they started avidly shipping whatever slash pair you like, it wouldn't necessarily mean they weren't homophobic

there are a disturbing number of people I've met in fandom who are a-ok with gays in fic, but not in real life

Judging from the picture you choose for the secret maybe she just doesn't like people fetizing gay actors (Zachary Quinto) with posts about how he is so obviously cheating on his boyfriend by having sex with his best (straight) friend.
Sorry dude but pinto doesn't make you opeminded about homosexuality. These shippers had the fucking nerve to actually ask Zachary if they're more than friends or he reads slash fanfictions about them.
