- Carlos is either Hispanic or Latino (SERIOUSLY, THE NAME SHOULD GIVE THAT PART AWAY AT LEAST) with dark hair and some grey at the temples. There's a quote about him being "dark" that could be interpreted as, his skin is dark too. HE'S A CANON POC. No discussion here.
- What we know about Cecil is that he's "not thin, nor thick; and not tall nor short"; and we know it (if I'm not mistaken) because that's the way Steve was described and Steve is Cecil's "broken mirror". EVERYTHING ELSE IS OPEN TO INTERPRETATION. IT'S NOT A SIN TO MAKE HIM WHITE IF YOU WANT HIM TO BE WHITE. (Nor is a sin to make him a POC either!). The thing is, the creators made the character ambiguous on purpose, and except for the previous, minimal description (which lands him in "average height/weight"), anything goes and nothing is more canon than the others.
Dude, I'm all about for POC representation, I'm Latina myself, but this is the silliest fight in the history of ever and it's getting so bloody it's amazing or horrifying, and TOTALLY NOT THE POINT of the podcast.
For the record, I have two favorite headcanons: A human Cecil with a metaphorical third eye (NOT an Eldritch!Abomination flesh-and-blood third eye), that yes, is white, but that's because I like visual contrasts and Carlos is Hispanic/Latino already. And the other is that Cecil is truly the Voice of Night Vale who looks like... whatever you want him/expect him to look like - which means that when he's alone, he looks like nothing.
That doesn't mean I'm going to burn the house of anyone with a different headcanon. And don't get me started on the Trans!Carlos thing, where did that even came from? O.o I get that some people want trans* representation, but that's a headcanon, not Word of God and most of that people react really badly if you don't agree with them.
TL;DR: Why can't we all get along ;;

And I wouldn't find odd Cecil and Kevin keep pictures of each other at their desks... *redirects you to the concept of "Kismesis" from Homestuck* XD

(For the record, someone actually asked this to the creators and they said -a bit baffled- "Well, we thought it was obvious?". IRL, of course a name indicates nothing, but in fiction, authors usually pay a lot of attention to that kind of stuff. And you ain't naming a character Carlos/Hanamichi/Mustafa if you don't plan to make said character at least of mixed race.)
Source?

On top of that
Then again there's plenty of fanfiction where blond haired blue eyed American teenagers are named Sakura so who knows maybe they just thought the writers were shitty
Re: On top of that
On the other hand, I've met loads of Latino guys named "Jonathan" (often spelled Yonatan, Jonatan, Johnatthan, and variations of such), but it's usually because of people of low social status who want to name their kids a "cool" name. I guess it's because that kind of people see a "white" name as an upgrade, while most white people wouldn't name their kids something ethnic.
Back to fiction, I've never seen someone older than 16 doing the American!blonde!blue-eyed!Sakura thing; and I really doubt a professional writer would do something like that for no good reason, and/or without explaining it in the plot somewhere, even as a mention if it's not plot-important.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)This guy's name is Juan Pablo. He's Venezuelan. Yeah it's not Carlos, but I don't doubt they exist. A quick Google glance gives you a wide variety of Carloses.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 05:06 am (UTC)(link)Depends on the author, tbh. I've known [published] authors who picked a name simply because they thought it stsounded good, not because of anything to really do with the character. So counting on people to pick up on something like that, unless explicitly stated in the actual series is a bit silly on the creator's part, imo.
And pulling in the dark thing doesn't really clear things up either, since "dark" can cover so much.
Note: Not arguing that he's poc - personally, I don't generally picture characters anyways...and I kind of really like the headcanon he's the Carlos from Magic School Bus. Just pointing out that expecting a name and a one word description to make things obvious is really, pretty silly - particularly for a series set in a country where you can have someone whose black named Heidi Rodriquez. [And yes - that's really someone I knew school.]

To be serious, the reason the fandom can't get along is because people are people.

*Homestuck kids are drawn specifically so they can be interpreted as from any race. The only catch is - Half the kids have dark hair, and the other half has to be light-haired. But this is done for aesthetics only, and the skin color/race can be whatever you want.
