How is Blurred Lines rapey?

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-10-16 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I seriously do not understand. I expected something different but what I got was a pretty bland if embarrassing song about hitting on girls at clubs.

I don't think Tumblr has ever been flirted with.

I'm not. I even went back to look at the lyrics after hearing it for the first time to make sure I didn't miss anything.

The song isn't rapey. You could call it creepy, but that's a different vibe.

much of the lyrics being near identical to the things actual rapists say may have something to do with it

Here's the actual lyrics:

"Blurred Lines"
(feat. T.I. & Pharrell Williams)

[Intro: Pharrell]
Everybody get up
Everybody get up
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey

[Verse 1: Robin Thicke]
If you can't hear what I'm trying to say
If you can't read from the same page
Maybe I'm going deaf,
Maybe I'm going blind
Maybe I'm out of my mind
[Pharell:] Everybody get up

[Pre-chorus: Robin Thicke]
OK now he was close, tried to domesticate you
But you're an animal, baby, it's in your nature
Just let me liberate you
Hey, hey, hey
You don't need no papers
Hey, hey, hey
That man is not your maker

[Chorus: Robin Thicke]
And that's why I'm gon' take a good girl
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You're a good girl
Can't let it get past me
You're far from plastic
Talk about getting blasted
I hate these blurred lines
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
But you're a good girl
The way you grab me
Must wanna get nasty
Go ahead, get at me
[Pharell:] Everybody get up

[Verse 2: Robin Thicke]
What do they make dreams for
When you got them jeans on
What do we need steam for
You the hottest bitch in this place
I feel so lucky
Hey, hey, hey
You wanna hug me
Hey, hey, hey
What rhymes with hug me?
Hey, hey, hey

[Pre-chorus: Robin Thicke]
OK now he was close, tried to domesticate you
But you're an animal, baby it's in your nature
Just let me liberate you
Hey, hey, hey
You don't need no papers
Hey, hey, hey
That man is not your maker
Hey, hey, hey

[Chorus: Robin Thicke]
And that's why I'm gon' take a good girl
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You're a good girl
Can't let it get past me
You're far from plastic
Talk about getting blasted
[Pharell:] Everybody get up
I hate these blurred lines
I know you want it
I hate them lines
I know you want it
I hate them lines
I know you want it
But you're a good girl
The way you grab me
Must wanna get nasty
Go ahead, get at me

[Verse 3: T.I.]
One thing I ask of you
Let me be the one you back that ass to
Go, from Malibu, to Paris, boo
Yeah, I had a bitch, but she ain't bad as you
So hit me up when you passing through
I'll give you something big enough to tear your ass in two
Swag on, even when you dress casual
I mean it's almost unbearable
In a hundred years not dare, would I
Pull a Pharside let you pass me by
Nothing like your last guy, he too square for you
He don't smack that ass and pull your hair like that
So I just watch and wait for you to salute
But you didn't pick
Not many women can refuse this pimpin'
I'm a nice guy, but don't get it if you get with me

[Bridge: Robin Thicke]
Shake the vibe, get down, get up
Do it like it hurt, like it hurt
What you don't like work?

[Pre-chorus: Robin Thicke]
Baby can you breathe? I got this from Jamaica
It always works for me, Dakota to Decatur, uh huh
No more pretending
Hey, hey, hey
Cause now you winning
Hey, hey, hey
Here's our beginning

[Chorus: Robin Thicke]
I always wanted a good girl
(Pharell: Everybody get up)
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You're a good girl
Can't let it get past me
You're far from plastic
Talk about getting blasted
I hate these blurred lines
(Pharell: Everybody get up)
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
But you're a good girl
The way you grab me
Must wanna get nasty
Go ahead, get at me

[Outro: Pharrell]
Everybody get up
Everybody get up
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey

This sounds a lot like a guy trying to get a girl to leave the club with him. It doesn't sound like a guy FORCING THE GIRL TO DO ANYTHING

uuuh well if you paid attention to the lyrics

a lot of the phrases are actual common shit actual rapists say to their victims

plus thicke straight up said in an interview the song is about sexually harassing women on the street

think what you want of thicke's explanations, i still think he's a nasty fuck but

Robin Thicke explained the song's meaning to The Daily Star: "It is mostly throwaway fun, but naturally Pharrell and I - being in love with our wives, having kids and loving our mothers - we have a lot of respect for women," he said. "So the way we were seeing it is, 'I know man tries to domesticate you but you're an animal, you are just like any man'.
"It is also about the blurred line between a good girl and bad girl, people who want to get naughty," he added.

[...]

Thicke addressed the debate over the song's lyrics during an interview with Today's Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie. "When we made the song, we had nothing but the most respect for women and - my wife, I've been with the same woman since I was a teenager," the singer said.

"So for us," he continued, "we were just trying to make a funny song and sometimes the lyrics get misconstrued when you're just trying to put people on the dance floor and have a good time, but we had no idea it would stir this much controversy. We only had the best intentions."

Thicke went on to claim that the debate over the song is a positive thing as it stirs conversation. "It's supposed to make us talk about what's important and what the relationship between men and women is," he said, "but if you listen to the lyrics it says 'That man is not your maker' - it's actually a feminist movement within itself."

He also said this shit.

The whole song is him saying I know you're just saying no so I won't think you're easy, not because you actually want to say no. Plus his comments about the song are even worse. He said it was a pleasure to get to degrade women because normally he has to be a good, married guy.

That's not how I understood it. I thought the whole thing was set out to be an over the top, almost satire version of music videos, and that a married man was a good person to do it because since he was happily married and respectful of his wife etc people would realise that these were not his actual views on women.

Re: How is Blurred Lines rapey?

I've heard people argue that the "blurred lines" are the blurred lines of consent, and since there's never a blurred line about consent, it's rapey, but then I've also seen people claim that the "blurred lines" are the blurred lines between what woman are supposed to "want" and what the woman in the song *actually* wants (dirty kinky animalistic sex)

on the rapey side again, people are claiming that some of the lyrics, such as "you know you want it" were used by rapists, therefor the song is about rape, to which I just kind of "o_O;;" because those words can be used in other contexts as well (are you sure you don't want this [food item], come on, you know you want it!), does that make those contexts rapey too?

tl;dr: anon hasn't even ever listened to the fucking song and is already sick of the controversy

Seriously, listen to the song.

I'm not defending the video, that's outright skeezy.

Re: How is Blurred Lines rapey?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-17 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Another opinion - the "blurred lines" are the lines in the woman's mind. She's a good girl, so she has this sexual "line" she won't cross. Probably she's married (see "that man is not your maker"). But the song is about her being out at a club and this guy being blown away by how hot she is and she is sending him some signals that she's attracted to him ("the way you grab me, must want to get nasty"), hence blurring that line she won't cross in her head. Because this guy isn't going to get anywhere with her, he hates those "blurred lines." But that doesn't mean he doesn't spend the whole song trying to talk her into sleeping with him.

If a rapist says "I love you, I want you," while raping, does it make those phrases unusable in any form or context ever that plays in public?

Okay, I'm sorry for posting twice, but I'm really uncomfortable with the last line in your comment. It sounds to me, and this is probably not how you intended it, but it sounds to me like:
- these are normal flirty things to say
- if you do not think so you must have never been flirted with (implication: because you're unattractive/socially inept)
- therefore it is your fault for being too immature to understand that these are nice normal things

It just... can I use the word gaslighting? It feels like gaslighting. And ugh. Sorry.

Oh Dear God

I was imprecise. I should say: tumblr has never been flirted with by creepy/intensely socially awkward guys. I have.

The experience was not "rapey." It was skeevy as hell, though. Does that make sense? When everything is "rapey" nothing is.

But fuck you (kinda, I know you mean well). Gaslighting? Seriously? Because I disagree with you about a song? I was talking about clubs. I can tell you that I have never been in a club that served alcohol that didn't have Those People in it. Those People come in all genders. Those People are there to get laid and are often really bad at the attempt.

And before you accuse me of being abused again, this is why I stopped letting friends drag me to clubs. I don't like it. So no, I'm not trying to appeal to whatever Male Gaze Panopticonorama you think I'm happily prancing around.

The "You know you want it/I know you want it" part sounds kind of rapey to me. It sounds like something a creep would think of a drunk "slutty" girl at a club. Guy doesn't mean it that way but that's how I hear it. FWIW, I've never heard Tumblr debate about it and I'm not a SJW.

Re: How is Blurred Lines rapey?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-17 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ok. I suspect you're going to cling on to this edgy devils advocate shtick, but I'll take a crack at an explanation all the same.

The song has "I know you want it" repeated 18 times, yes?

That would be a man telling a woman over and over that she want's sex, yes?

That would be a man telling a woman she wants sex, and even if he's right and she does indeed "want it", it is not his place to decide this. That is still a man basically deciding that any objections she might throw up don't count.

I don't know how to break it down any further without sounding patronizing. You see how that attitude leads to rape, yes? You see how that attitude is part of rape culture, yes?

I know you want it
No, I don't
I know you want it
No, I really don't
I know you want it
Pease go away
I know you want it
Stop bothering me
I know you want it
No, I do not want it
I know you want it
No
I know you want it
No
I know you want it
Look, you're bothering me
I know you want it
Fuck off
I know you want it
I'm getting sick of this now
I know you want it
No
I know you want it
No
I know you want it
I do not
I know you want it
No
I know you want it
No
I know you want it
no
I know you want it
no
I know you want it
