Most people are hating on Wrecking Ball's video, not the song. In fact I've mostly seen people admit they like the song, complain the video ruined the song, and in one case I saw a confession bear meme where OP was ~ashamed~ to admit they'd liked Wrecking Ball when they first heard it on the radio, before they saw the video.

I have to say I seriously doubt it's the music or her voice garnering the negative attention.

I'm not much into pop but i liked the song, thought the vid was neat (she's unapologetic and unashamed, i like that) and, hello, seriously hot.

Sorry you hate her voice/her music/wtf ever, but guess what? The crap in the Tumblr post exists, is real, and pretending it doesn't is stupid.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Personal tastes aside, I agree with the tumblr post. It's a HUUUUGE double standard sexist as fuck and while not everything has to be, in your words, OMG sexist, this sure as hell is.

I don't see anything wrong with Mileys song or the video. I mean Miley is hardly the first person to strip for their video and thte song itself is really just inoffensive POP.

Blurred Lines is certainly a catchier song because of its beat, but jfc I found the video clip creepy and offensive when I saw it. It could have been awesome if they had a video clip where a woman was in charge in counter point to the lyrics but they went for the easy 'lets have naked chicks as objects' route.

I don't even like Miley Cyrus, and don't agree at all with the way she's choosing to present herself - mostly because I watched "Wrecking Ball" after I watched her presentation with Thicke (singing "Blurred Lines", which made it worse), so I kinda... question her motives for all the sexualization.

But sometimes Tumblr has a point. And this is one of these times. I don't care about celebrities, and even I know she's been slut-shamed to hell and back. Meanwhile all the protests against Thicke are dismissive as ZOMG THE FEMINAZIS ARE RANTING AGAIN HOW HILARIOUS; and the dude gets to become even more famous for one of the creepiest songs released this year, bask in his glory, and even dares to say his shit is ~progressive~.

Thanks for making me feel bad for liking the song, asshole. I don't really like the singer but that's a good song.

Maybe, and let me just stress the maybe, just maybe, your opinion doesn't represent the whole. Maybe. Think about it.

How is Blurred Lines rapey?

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-10-16 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I seriously do not understand. I expected something different but what I got was a pretty bland if embarrassing song about hitting on girls at clubs.

I don't think Tumblr has ever been flirted with.

Her nudity represented vulnerability? That's a little hard to believe with the male gaze and the fact that Terry Richardson was the director. It felt more like she was naked for a video of a song that just didn't call for it.

I disagree with you though, OP. Because yes, everything does have to be OMG sexism "or whatever the fuck", because these are real issues. I'm wildly disturbed that you can identify what makes Blurred Lines a disgusting song while being okay with it because it's catchy. I really hope this is a troll. If not, then I highly recommend you do some research! There are actually a lot of great blogs on Tumblr that dedicate themselves to issues that specifically revolve around sexism and rape culture. If you want me to send you some URLs, then I'd be more than happy to! Please don't find comfort in your ignorance.

Okay but the Miley video actually has more likes than Blurred Lines? And almost as many views despite coming out months later? I am honestly confused what the point of that post was.

Besides that, I totally disagree with OP. The clusterfuck of perspectives and agendas in these conversations gives me a headache though. I used to get angry about the ridiculous bullshit people said, but I no longer care.

Without Cyrus doing softcore, we wouldn't have Hulk Hogan in a thong on a wrecking ball:

I like Wrecking Ball. The video and the song. It's actually the only Miley Cyrus song I've ever heard that I can stand to listen to, and the video... is fine? Kind of boring, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
i went to listen to wrecking ball when i saw people praising it and i just find it a terribly boring song idk it does nothing for me.

as for the video, i can get behind the idea of stripping down to symbolize emotional vulnerability, however what miley is doing in that video is making out with a hammer and posing for a ~sexy nude shoot on that ball and pretty much trying to cram as much edgy as she can into those few minutes. i mean whatever it's her video but don't pretend it has some sort of deep artistic meaning lol.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, my only problem with the Wrecking Ball video is that it intentionally invites comparison with Nothing Compares 2 U, and that's something that pretty much no pop song ever should do. Because whatever pop song we're talking about, odds are it's not as good as Nothing Compares 2 U, and Wrecking Ball certainly isn't.

Except as some people have pointed out, all people talk about with respect to Wrecking Ball is the VIDEO. Not the song itself. I've seen virtually no discussion about the music, just people bitching about how much of a "slut" she is for being naked in the video (and the tongue thing gets like, 40% of the conversation).

I'm also with the others in this thread saying it's not a bad song. I'm not a fan of her music, this is the first time I've ever really enjoyed a song of hers.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-17 12:01 am (UTC)(link)

I don't find either of them catchy in a single way , even if I ignore who's actually singing and however shitty the lyrics might be.

Interesting though, how many songs I've heard not unlike Blurred Lines yet it's the first one so widely bitched about.

I know next to nothing about Miley or her other music, but I love the song Wrecking Ball. I did not think her naked and licking a hammer evoked vulnerability, but I'm not going to flip out and call her names for it either. That's rude and unnecesary and she can do what she wants.

And yea, I think most people who hate on the song are hating on the video more. I didn't like the video, but I do like the song. And I'm sure there are people who don't like either. *shrugs*

The outrage and hate she's gotten recently has been kind of insane though. You can dislike someone or something without resorting to wild hate, but that isn't happening here. So I think tumblr kind of has a point this time.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-17 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Wrecking Ball - the song, the video - is pretentious as fuck and I saw it as Cyrus trying very hard to both Say Something and Be Noticed.

Blurred Lines - while rapey and all the feminist things they say about it - has NO such aspirations. It is what it is and can be taken and then dismissed as such. Fun, disposable.

Like Tumblr SJWs, come to think of it.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-17 01:15 am (UTC)(link)

I love the lyrics for Wrecking Ball, Blurred lines is not only creepy but the beat is annoying.

Except that person wasn't talking about quality. they were talking about the attitudes present. Quality of the media should not be a factor when discussing abhorrent ideas.

Case in point, do you think, like a sickening amount of people, that Roman Polaski (sp) should be given a free pass because he makes fantastic movies?

If no, then it's the same thing, you're just arguing over the price.
