It depends. What evil things did they do?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Al Capone is, well, Al Capone.

As for Swearengen (the guy from Deadwood), Wikipedia says "Swearengen lured desperate young women from far away to Deadwood, then forced them into prostitution through a combination of bullying and physical brutality, by himself and his henchmen."

Who's she and why do we not like her?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
She's Madame Lalaurie from American Horror Story, based off this person.

And here I always thought liking a character did not mean approving of their horrible behavior or the actions of their real life counterparts. But what do I know?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but people "hate" female characters far more than they hate male ones.

Definitely, I kind of wonder why fandom likes to woobify jerks.

Some of my favorite characters are grade a assholes.

You can most certainly like horrible characters without approving of their horrible actions, but it's not exactly hard to notice the trend of people who excuse their horrible actions in ridiculous ways. I've seen people come up with excuses for genocide, torture, rape, murder, etc, because they loved the character that committed the atrocity. It happens more often than not. You'll have a harder time finding Loki fans who say "he was terrible and I find him interesting" compared to people who say "but... look at his childhood!"

i....certainly never rooted for Swearengen lol.

right now i think my main dislike for madame is that i fear her end game is some kind of redemption. if she stays horrible and gets a horrible end then i could enjoy her character as part of the story while still despising her guts.

Murphy answers that in the second question.

I'm not surprised, really; especially since slavery and it's aftermath is still a touchy subject in the US.

Am I the only one who thinks the SERIAL MURDER OF SLAVES is a bit more disturbing than being a crook?

I mean I don't think it's ever wrong to enjoy a character, they are fucking fictional. BUT I DON'T THINK YOU QUITE UNDERSTAND HOW BAD THIS HISTORICAL FIGURE WAS, OP

Swearengen recruited his prostitutes in the same manner as it is still carried out by some today; advertising legitimate stage, cleaning, or waitressing jobs in his theater to desperate young women and advancing them the money for their (one way) trip; then, when they arrived, forcing them into what was essentially indentured servitude as prostitutes. Those who balked were first threatened with demands for repayment of the funds advanced to them for the trip; if that failed, they were threatened with beatings, and if that failed they were beaten and physically forced to submit to Swearengen's demands. Many still resisted, but those who escaped this fate could only find themselves in no better situation, as penniless women with no source of income, alone in a rough and rowdy mining camp, and with the constant threat of Swearengen's men hanging over them. Many grew sick and died from lack of proper nutrition and shelter, while many others committed suicide.

Idc, I love her on the show (NOT in real life, obviously) and I think Kathy Bates is fantastic.

Dude. You know that forcing women into prostitution is way more cool than mistreating black people.

I get what you mean. I mean, I don't think disliking female characters is necessarily a bad thing. But when you see lists of 'the worst TV characters' and the majority of the characters people hate are women, then you have a problem. Part of that is in the writing, part of it is in the way people respond to it.

I just do not get squeamish people in this fandom. Not just gory squeamish, but the offended kind of squeamish. I mean…the show's been pretty forthright about just being this exploitation mindfuck shock schlock (with a fucktastic cast) so it always surprises me when someone gets judgmental about anything to do with this show.

Kathy Bates is hilarious. You can like her. So far, she's kind of been comic relief.

I loved Swearengen. He was my favorite character by FAR. I'm sure that makes me a horrible person but idefc. I don't watch American Horror Story, but I'm sure that if they made the Madame's character interesting enough, with Kathy Bates playing her, she could just as well be my favorite character on that show, too.

Male or female characters, if they're torturing and murdering people and especially if it's presented as cool or lol or they try to make me sympathise with said murderer because they're a main character over their victims I will hate them forever and make no apologies about that.

I don't know whether or to what extent sexism is an issue in this, but I wish people would stop getting so bent out of shape about anyone liking Lalaurie or Capone or whatever unsavory historical person comes to mind when they're characters in a fictional show/movie. These are not the real people. And these aren't documentaries. Yes, they may be based (to varying degrees and with varying accuracy) on real people, but their lines and stories are being written. By writers. For entertainment purposes.

If you like Kathy Bates' Lalaurie, you are not condoning the actions or beliefs of the real person. Maybe you like Kathy Bates. Or how she's written which, to date, has been with a number of non-threatening comic undertones you certainly wouldn't associate with the real person. You can do that and still hate the real person because they're not the same. One is real and one has been removed from reality to the point that she's become more fictional than real. To me, liking Bates' Lalaurie is no different from liking Lange's Fiona because they're both characters in a show whose purpose is not historical accuracy.

I'm just so happy someone referenced Deadwood. People are always complaining about crappy writing and paper-thin characters in their favorite shows yet they still watch them. Just do yourself a favor. Stop watching shitty things and watch Deadwood. You may not like all the characters in it, but damn are they well-written and interesting.
